Two men jailed for stealing $6 million golden toilet from Churchill's birthplace

LONDON - Two men were jailed on Friday for stealing an 18-carat golden toilet that had been on display as an artwork in an exhibition at Winston Churchill's birthplace.
The fully functioning toilet, a work titled "America" by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was stolen from the Churchill family seat of Blenheim Palace in southern England, a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Prosecutor Julian Christopher told jurors at the start of the trial at Oxford Crown Court in February that a group of five men had driven two stolen vehicles through locked wooden gates into the palace grounds before dawn on September 14, 2019.
They broke in through a window, smashed down a wooden door, ripped the toilet from the wall and left after five minutes in the building.
The toilet, weighing 98 kilos (216 pounds) was insured for $6 million. Prosecutors say it was probably divided into smaller amounts of gold to sell it off. None of the gold has ever been recovered.
James Sheen, 40, had pleaded guilty before trial to burglary, conspiring to convert or transfer the gold and converting or transferring the gold.
Michael Jones, 39, was found guilty of burglary by a jury, having pleaded not guilty.
Judge Ian Pringle said the pair had played important roles in the "bold and brazen heist", though the judge said he could not be sure that Jones was present during the burglary.
Sheen was sentenced to four years in jail, with the sentence to begin at the end of a separate jail term of nearly 20 years he is currently serving for a series of thefts.
Jones was sentenced to 27 months in prison. REUTERS

Cyprus arrests individual on suspicion of terror-related plot, police say
NICOSIA - Police in Cyprus have arrested an individual on suspicion of terror-related offences and espionage, authorities said on Saturday. The individual appeared before a district court on Saturday, which ordered an eight-day detention pending inquiries. No further details would be issued, police said, citing national security. Several Cypriot news outlets reported the suspect was a man of Azeri ethnic descent and had been arrested in the Zakaki suburb of the coastal city of Limassol. The suspect was thought to have had a British RAF military base in nearby Akrotiri under surveillance, as well as Cyprus's own Andreas Papandreou Air Base in the western region of Paphos since mid-April, Cyprus's ANT1 news portal reported. Cyprus lies very close to the Middle East and has in recent days been used as a transit point for people either leaving or going to the region amid a conflict between regional foes Israel and Iran. 82 people nabbed after anti-drug bust, more than $132k worth of drugs seized SINGAPORE – Eighty-two people were arrested after drugs worth more than $132,000 were seized in a five-day, islandwide operation. In a statement on June 21, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said that the anti-drug blitz took place from June 16 to 20, and covered areas like Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Merah, Changi, Punggol and Woodlands. A total of 1,307g of cannabis, 739g of heroin, 196g of Ice (methamphetamine), 52 cannabis seeds, two Ecstasy tablets, 2g of cannabis resin and 1g of cannabis-infused tablets were seized. The seized drugs were estimated to be able to feed the addiction of 640 abusers for a week, CNB added. The police responded to a call for assistance on June 14 at a residential unit in Punggol Central. They arrested a 35-year-old Singaporean man after searching the unit and finding substances believed to be controlled drugs and drug paraphernalia. CNB officers were alerted and took over the investigation of the drug offences. In another incident on June 16, CNB officers launched a drug bust in Yishun Avenue 6 after follow-up investigations. A 34-year-old Singaporean man was arrested after a search of a residential unit found a total of about 29g of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Another follow-up operation later in the evening saw the arrest of two male foreign nationals in Moonstone Lane in Bendemeer – a 31-year-old for suspected drug trafficking offences and a 37-year-old for alleged drug consumption. A search of the 31-year-old's electric bicycle and his hideout in Bendemeer found a total of about 1,095g of cannabis, 19g of Ice, drug paraphernalia and cash amounting to $3,944. On June 18, officers arrested a 59-year-old Singaporean man for alleged drug trafficking in Bukit Merah, which was soon followed by the arrest of a 69-year-old Singaporean man in the vicinity for drug-related offences. A total of about 209g of heroin and 17g of Ice were seized from the 59-year-old man's place. Another man, a 62-year-old Singaporean , was nabbed in Yishun Avenue 4 for suspected drug trafficking. CNB officers had to force their way into his residential unit after the man refused to open the door. A search of the unit turned up about 247g of heroin and a small amount of Ice. Investigations into all the suspects arrested are ongoing. Anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine ('pure heroin') or 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty. According to CNB's annual statistics report on Feb 12, there were 126 new drug abusers under the age of 20 arrested in 2024, with the youngest aged 13. This was nearly 30 per cent more than the 97 nabbed in 2023. New abusers totalled 966 in 2024, an increase from the 952 arrested in 2023. Marzouki, who was president from 2011 to 2014, accuses Saied of establishing an authoritarian regime after dismissing parliament and ruling by decree since he seized almost all powers in 2011. Saied defends his actions as necessary steps to stabilise Tunisia. This is the third ruling against Marzouki, after a court ruled last year to imprison him for eight years and four years before that in various other cases. Commenting on the ruling, Marzouki said from his exile in Paris: "I say to these judges: your rulings are invalid, and you are invalid ... you will be tried soon". "Democracy will return", he added. Earlier on Friday, another court sentenced Sahbi Atig, a senior official in Ennahda, the country's main opposition party, to 15 years in prison on charges of money laundering, his lawyer said. The 15-year sentence was shorter than some sentences handed down recently. In April, a court sentenced a string of opposition leaders, businessmen and lawyers to prison terms of up to 66 years, on conspiracy charges. Most of the leaders of political parties in Tunisia are in prison, including Abir Moussi, leader of the Free Constitutional Party, and Rached Ghannouchi, the head of Ennahda - two of Saied's most prominent opponents.
