June 4 (UPI) -- The 50th annual Toronto International Film Festival will open with the world premiere of the documentary John Candy: I Like Me.
TIFF announced the documentary, directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, will screen Sept. 4 at the Opening Night Gala at Roy Thomson Hall.
The film chronicles the life and career of Candy, an actor and comedian who died in 1994 at the age of 43.
"Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy's humor," TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a news release. "We love that John's global career started in Toronto, and we can't wait to share John Candy: I Like Me with everyone at this year's Opening Night Gala premiere. Colin Hanks has made a hugely entertaining film packed with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, but like John, this movie is all heart. For us, it's the perfect way to kick off TIFF's 50th edition."
John Candy: I Like Me features never-before-seen home videos, interviews with his family and the recollections of colleagues and collaborators.
The documentary is set to be released in the fall on Prime Video.

Lauren Cohan: Maggie-Hershel relationship is complex, sad in 'Dead City' S2

Photo by Robert Clark/AMC NEW YORK, June 22 (UPI) -- Lauren Cohan says she thinks Maggie's strained relationship with her teen son Hershel (Logan Kim) in Season 2 of the zombie-apocalypse drama, The Walking Dead: Dead City, resonates with viewers because it is such a common parent-child dynamic. "That part of the story-line has been really complex and real and sad, and we get to unpack all of this, but mostly because he is a teenage boy and it is his responsibility to NOT do what's best for himself," Cohan told reporters during a recent New York Comic Con press conference. "No," she laughed. "It just comes with the territory that there's going to be a push and pull between he and I, and I think that's what makes the season really relatable for me. We've all been teenagers, and we've all known that nothing our parents say or do, can ever be right, and the rub for Maggie is that the influences that aren't her -- she's not a perfect parent either -- but the influences that aren't her are particularly dire." The Walking Dead spin-off, Dead City, shows Maggie teaming up with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), her husband's baseball-bat-wielding murderer, for an unlikely mission in New York to rescue Hershel from the clutches of the Croat (Zelijko Ivanek), a power-hungry mad man who just happens to idolize Negan and to whom Hershel has become devoted. Taking the story back. The season finale of #DeadCity premieres TONIGHT at 9pm on AMC or stream it early on AMC+. The Walking Dead (@WalkingDead_AMC) June 22, 2025 "The people that he came in contact with in Season 1 are going to have a lot of influence on him," Cohan said about Hersehel. "You always want to protect your child from danger and the danger here is maybe a little more potent than [what real kids encounter] -- or not, because the dangers of social media and the dangers of mental illness for children are potent. So, I like the fact that we do this on the scale of the apocalypse, but it's issues that are close to the heart." Playing resourceful and loyal community leader Maggie for two seasons on Dead City and 10 seasons on the flagship series, The Walking Dead, has taught the actress the importance of perseverance and leaving one's comfort zone. "You could rest on your laurels or not look for a challenge within yourself as a performer or as a teammate," Cohan said. "I do find myself to be very different from [Maggie] in many ways and I'm always looking for ways that I'm similar," she added. "Knowing the best way to swing a hammer [is one]. One of the things that we, in this world, have more of a luxury to do is self-reflection and there will be more of that in our show and, so, I guess it's just art informing life, informing art." Season 2 wraps up Sunday on AMC and AMC+. Anxiety levels right now. Catch up on the penultimate episode of #DeadCity on AMC+. The Walking Dead (@WalkingDead_AMC) June 16, 2025

Will There Be a ‘We Were Liars' Season 2?

Season 1 of We Were Liars, based on the E. Lockhart novel of the same name, just wrapped. The YA bestseller was adapted for screen by showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie into eight episodes, and the season finale seemed to be setting up more intrigue ahead. So, will there be a season 2? Here's what we know so far. Not yet. The second season just finished airing, and it may take a while for Prime Video to decide to renew. Plec and MacKenzie told The Wrap that they've had 'endless conversations' with the streamer on the topic. 'They are very supportive and just waiting on whatever data it is these algorithmic creators need to have before they write big check, so we're looking forward to the data working in our favor,' Plec said. 'We are, as usual, at the mercy of the robots,' MacKenzie added. While talking to Variety, MacKenzie said, 'The great thing about this show is that the first season has a satisfying, powerful ending. So I want people who generally don't tune in to the first season because they're afraid it's going to get canceled, to know that they're safe to watch this show, and if it doesn't get a second season, you've still got a whole story. But also, Emily wrote three books and we love this world. We love our cast. We'd love the opportunity that exists for more story, so we're hopeful that we'll get to come back and do more. But also, should this be a limited series, I think it's a beautiful story.' The show follows the teen members of the wealthy and elite Sinclair family, Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, and their friend Gat, across two summers. The first summer involves traumatic loss and the second summer sees Cadence dealing with the loss of her siblings and their ghosts' struggles to move on to the other side. Johnny ends the season still earthbound and seemingly tied to his mother, Carrie. That means a second season could center around their relationship and the older Sinclairs. In an interview with The Wrap, Julie Plec shared, 'The best gift that Emily Lockhart gave us as we were sitting down to write We Were Liars was she published Family of Liars, which was a prequel about the Sinclair sisters when they were teenagers. The book opens with Carrie telling the story of a very dark time and a very bad summer to her dead son.' 'We just wanted the audience to know that there's still more story to tell, and we're really looking forward to the opportunity to be able to do it,' she added. It's unclear if the released spirits would return, but season 1 starred Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Shubham Maheshwari, and Mamie Gummer. This post will be updated.
