NIA Takes Over Probe into Murder of Hindu Activist Suhas Shetty in Bajpe
Mangaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the investigation into the brutal murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty, who was hacked to death in broad daylight in Bajpe town on May 1. The central agency's team reached Mangaluru earlier this week and has initiated preliminary groundwork.
Mangaluru Police have officially confirmed the arrival of the NIA team, led by DSP Pawan Kumar. The team has met with City Crime Branch (CCB) officers to collect case-related documents and briefings. The Union government had transferred the case to the NIA following pressure from BJP leaders, particularly Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a central agency probe.
The NIA investigation may also include charge of collision of officials in aiding the murder of Suhas Shetty, which the Karnataka government was wary about. It is stated by the BJP leaders that a certain police official had checked the car of Suhas Shetty twice on the day he was murdered, the checks had been carried out twice within a span of few hours to ensure that Shetty and his co passengers in the car had no weapons.
Initial investigations by the local police had pointed to the involvement of a group of eight Muslim youths, allegedly affiliated with the banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI). The calculated nature of the attack and the possible ideological motivation behind the killing raised concerns about a broader conspiracy.
The NIA is likely to revisit the evidence and re-examine the suspects in custody. It may also explore whether provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) are applicable if firm links to proscribed outfits are established. There are also reports suggesting that the agency will look into possible lapses by certain local police personnel.
With the NIA's entry, the case is set to widen in scope, potentially extending beyond the immediate assailants to uncover a larger network, if any, behind the murder.

New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nishikant Dubey slammed Rahul Gandhi on Sunday, questioning the motives of the Congress leader to encourage learning English rather than local languages while also alluding to the 'hypocrisy' of opposing the National Education Police (NEP) 2020 for language choice stating that the 1986 NEP had similar goals. 'Rahul Gandhi ji your investigative advisor is hell bent on destroying you, this is the education policy of 1986 given by your father to the country, in this, your father is promising the country to promote Hindi, teach Sanskrit language and translate English into regional languages. This same education policy is almost in place now. Students should also grow with regional languages, changes in this have been made by Prime Minister Modi ji in 2020,' Dubey said in a post on X in Hindi. He said that while countries such as Russia, China, France, Germany, Japan and, Arab countries were 'proud of their language,' the former Congress president is proud of English 'like slaves.' 'Russia, China, France, Germany, Arab countries, Japan, Korea all are proud of their language and it is developed, why are you proud of English like slaves, we are proud of Santhali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam, Hindi, Sanskrit,' Dubey's post read. Dubey shared screenshots purportedly of the 1986 NEP, which stated 'the policy emphasises the adoption of regional languages as the media of instruction at the university stage; vigorous effort at implementation of the three language- formula; improvement in the linguistic competencies of students at different stages of education; provision of facilities for the study of English and other foreign languages; development of Hindi as the link of Sanskrit at the university stage...' Dubey's post was made in response to another post by Rahul Gandhi where he supported people, especially people from marginalised backgrounds, learning English. He said that learning the language could be a stepping stone to equality, more job opportunities, which is what the BJP-RSS does not want. 'It is not an English dam, it is a bridge. English is not shame, it is power. English is not a chain - it is a tool to break the chains. BJP-RSS don't want poor kids of India to learn English - because they don't want you to ask questions, move ahead, and become equal,' the Congress leader said in a post on X. While also highlighting that every language is useful and beautiful for its culture, knowledge, and soul, the party leader added, 'In today's world, English is as important as your mother tongue - because it will provide employment and boost your confidence. Every language of India has soul, culture, knowledge. We have to cherish them - and at the same time teach English to every child. This is the path to an India that competes with the world, that gives every child an equal opportunity.' The Congress leader's remarks were in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks, where he said that the languages of India are 'ornaments of our culture,' and to understand the land's history, dharma cannot be done in foreign languages. Iran won't bow down: Farooq Abdullah on US strikes
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 22 (ANI): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Sunday expressed disappointment over Muslim countries' silence on US strikes against Iran and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. Abdullah warned that if the Muslim world doesn't wake up, they might face similar consequences. 'I am disappointed that the Muslim world is silent. Today, Iran is in this condition, but tomorrow, it will be them who will be destroyed by the US. If they won't wake up today, they must wait for their turn,' Abdullah told ANI. He further said that he believes Iran won't abandon its ambitions despite the attacks. Drawing parallels with the Karbala, the National Conference leader stated that Iran 'won't bow down'. 'If they think that Iran will abandon its ambition, they are in a misconception. Iran remembers Karbala, and it thinks that it is the second Karbala. They will get their necks chopped off, but they won't bow down,' Abdullah told ANI. Abdullah further added, '...They want a regime change there (in Iran) - will things be better after a regime change? America and Israel have a long-standing view that they won't let Iran build a nuclear weapon, but if they think that Iran will abandon its ambition, they are in a misconception...' The Israeli Air Force on Sunday launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting military sites in western Iran, shortly after Iranian missile attacks injured civilians in Israel. According to a CNN report, the US likely used six B-2 bombers to drop a dozen GBU-57 A/B 'bunker buster' bombs, also known as Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP), on the Fordow nuclear site, which is Iran's main location for uranium enrichment. A US official also told CNN that a full payload of bombs was dropped on his first public remarks following the strikes, President Trump warned that further action could be taken if Tehran fails to agree to a satisfactory peace settlement.'There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we've witnessed over the last eight days,' Trump said in his address to the nation from the White House on Saturday (local time). New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): An Indian delegation led by Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth will visit Kenya and Madagascar from June 23 to 26, 2025, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence. As per the statement, in the first leg, MoS Defence will visit Kenya for the joint unveiling of the Commemorative Pillar (War memorial honouring the fallen soldiers of India and Kenya) at Taita-Taveta County on June 23. According to the release, the second leg would see the Minister visiting Madagascar on June 26 to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Madagascar's Independence and the creation of the Malagasy Armed Forces at Antananarivo. India and Kenya are maritime neighbours. Contemporary ties between the two countries are marked by high-level exchanges, robust trade and investment, medical-value travel from Kenya, and extensive people-to-people contacts. The two nations share a common legacy of struggle against colonialism. Many Indians participated in and supported the freedom struggle in Kenya. According to the official statement, India and Madagascar enjoy a multifaceted relationship rooted in historical ties, shared values, and a commitment to regional stability and development.
