IYC protests in Delhi against Bihar Government over FIR on Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi [India], May 16 (ANI): Indian Youth Congress workers staged a protest in Delhi against the Bihar government on Friday following an FIR filed by the Darbhanga district administration against Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
The FIR was filed against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly organising an event at the Ambedkar hostel in Darbhanga without official permission.
The protesters condemned the action, terming it an attempt to suppress political activities.
Earlier on Thursday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged that Bihar Police tried to stop him on his way to Ambedkar Hostel, Darbhanga district administration on Thursday said that they will take action against him for the violation of Section 163 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
The District Magistrate of Darbhanga told ANI, 'Darbhanga district administration to take action against Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for violation of CRPC 163.'
Earlier today, calling the NDA government in Bihar a 'Double Engine Dhokebaaz Sarkaar', Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Bihar Police stopped him on his way to the Ambedkar hostel in Darbhanga.
'The Bihar Police tried to stop me. But they could not stop me because your power (minority community) is watching over me. We told PM Narendra Modi that you have to conduct a census... Under your pressure, PM Narendra Modi announced a caste census in the country. Scared of your pressure, he placed the Constitution on his forehead. But their government is against democracy, the Constitution, and the minorities. This is the government of Adani-Ambani and not yours,' Rahul Gandhi said, addressing the gathering in Darbhanga.
'I guarantee that the moment our government forms in India and in Bihar, and implements everything that you deserve,' he added.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi, following his allegations, asked Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar since when the dialogue became a 'crime in the state.'
'NDA's 'Double Engine Dhokebaaz Sarkaar' in Bihar is preventing me from interacting with Dalit and backward students in Ambedkar Hostel. Since when has dialogue become a crime? Nitish ji, what are you afraid of? Do you want to hide the state of education and social justice in Bihar?' the Lok Sabha LoP said. (ANI)

Over a month and a half after Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) MLA Jaikrishn Patel was caught allegedly taking a Rs 20 lakh bribe, the party said Sunday that it has concluded in its internal investigation that he was trapped as part of a 'political conspiracy'. Party's national president Mohan Lal Roat told The Indian Express that there are plenty of things pointing towards a political conspiracy. 'There are discrepancies in the press conference by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (following Patel's arrest) and the FIR lodged in the case. It is said there were about 48 calls between the two (MLA Patel and complainant Ravindra Kumar). But our MLA replied 1-2 times but most of the calls were by him (Kumar).' Next, Roat questioned the idea of money being given in lieu of 'withdrawing' three Assembly questions when two of these were already answered last year and were in the public domain. 'What was the idea behind taking money to 'withdraw' the questions put up in July last year, when the government had clearly and promptly answered those questions.' Party MP Rajkumar Roat too has questioned the circumstances, saying, 'Since 1952, there must have been about 3,000 MLAs in Rajasthan; excluding those who repeated, there must have been 2,000 to 2,500 MLAs so far in the state. But this was the first time an MLA was trapped. From what our team has investigated, he was trapped as part of a conspiracy.' 'The person on the other end called 40-42 times. Why would the person, who was the MLA candidate for the now ruling party, get scared and give a bribe to the MLA of a regional party? This was planning and this was a conspiracy,' the MP said, referring to complainant Ravindra Kumar's father Ramniwas Meena. While Ravindra Kumar had contested 2023 Assembly elections from Karauli as a BSP candidate and stood third – behind BJP and Congress candidates – his father, Ramniwas Meena and co-owner of the mines, had contested the 2023 election from Todabhim on a BJP ticket but lost to Congress's Ghanshyam Mahar. On May 4, first-time MLA Patel, and a middleman Vijay Patel were arrested by the ACB for allegedly accepting a Rs 20-lakh bribe – the second instalment of a Rs 2.5 crore bribe – in lieu of withdrawing Assembly questions on mining. The ACB had said this was the first instance of it arresting an MLA in the state, and the mines in question are in Todabhim, about 600 kilometres away from the MLA's constituency in Banswara. Party chief Roat said that things would be clearer once they get to meet the MLA. 'We haven't been able to meet the MLA. They are not giving us time to meet, (but once this happens) this will help us clear more things. Moreover, the BJP candidate too had said that he won't let him (Patel) stay around for more than six months,' he said, referring to BJP leader Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya. 'So, due to all of this, we have concluded that he was trapped as part of a conspiracy,' the party chief said. Malviya was elected from Bagidora Assembly in 2023 on a Congress ticket but had left the party to join the BJP last year. He had then unsuccessfully contested the Banswara Lok Sabha (which includes Bagidora Assembly) against BAP's Rajkumar Roat. In the Bagidora bypoll too, BAP's Jaikrishn had defeated BJP's Subhash Tamboliya by a convincing margin of over 51,000 votes. The party's five-member team which investigated the case included party's three MLAs Umesh Meena (Aaspur), Thavar Chand (Dhariyawad), Anil Kumar Katara (Chorasi), party's national spokesperson Jitendra Meena, and party leader Kanti Bhai. MP Roat also said that Patel was 'trapped by people in power as part of a conspiracy. And the people have understood, because the Panchayat Samiti seat which the BJP had won earlier with 600 votes, lost in the by-election. The people have given a befitting reply.' 'We know that if he has made a mistake then his membership might be terminated. But we will have more clarity only once we meet him, and what is said in the chargesheet etc,' party's national president Mohan Lal Roat said.

ECI may conduct door-to-door voter verification in state

Patna/New Delhi: With the Bihar assembly elections scheduled for Oct-Nov this year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is considering launching an intensive house-to-house verification drive as part of the upcoming special summary revision of electoral rolls. The move comes in response to persistent concerns from political parties, civil society organisations and other agencies over alleged arbitrary inclusion and deletion of voters. "In order to make the system completely robust and free of any kind of errors, the ECI is contemplating an intensive house-to-house verification during the upcoming electoral roll revision to purify the rolls," an ECI official said on Sunday. The last such rigorous revision took place in 2004. The verification drive is expected to focus not only on adding eligible citizens but also on removing ineligible entries, including deceased voters, those who have migrated and foreign illegal immigrants who may have been enrolled based on inconclusive documentation. Highlighting the scale of electoral mobility, ECI data from 2024 shows that around 46.3 lakh voters changed residence, 2.3 crore applied for corrections, and 33.2 lakh sought replacements, amounting to over 3.2 crore voter record changes nationwide in a single year. A senior EC functionary said, "We are committed to ensuring that only genuine and eligible citizens are enrolled in the electoral rolls." If successful, the Bihar model could be replicated in the next national roll revision.

Village in Etah on edge after clash over Dalit marriage

Dhakpura village under Awagarh police station limits in Etah district remained tense on Sunday (June 22, 2025) after a marriage procession of a Dalit family was obstructed and allegedly attacked by some individuals of dominant caste on Saturday (June 21, 2025) night. One policeman was injured while controlling the situation. Local Dalits alleged of facing threats and inaction by police. Police force is stationed in the village to calm down tension. Senior district police officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police, reached the village to control the situation. 'The groom was coming from Hathras. As the bride is from the village and belongs to economically weaker family, the marriage was supported financially by all communities in the village. The marriage procession was going to the bride's house, but some people asked to take it to the whole village before reaching the destination. While passing through the settlement of a particular community (Rajput), verbal altercation took place. Police reached the spot to control the situation. In the melee, someone from the crowd threw stones at the police injuring a constable. We have registered an FIR against both the sides and investigating the matter through video footage. However, the marriage happened peacefully,' said Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to The Hindu. People belonging to Dalit community alleged that attempts were made by some individuals from the dominant caste group to forcefully turn back the marriage procession and threatened not to pass through the community settlement, leading to the incident. Local Dalits alleged of threats and demanded police to take action and provide security. In the past too, western and central U.P. districts have seen many such instances where Dalit marriage processions were obstructed by dominant social groups. In multiple occasions, police and administration have intervened to allow the procession pass peacefully.
