Stampeders sign six-time CFL all-star LB Adam Bighill to practice roster

B.C. Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. (3) gets sacked by Winnipeg Blue Bombers' Adam Bighill (4) during second half CFL action in Winnipeg Thursday, August 1, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods The Calgary Stampeders have signed linebacker Adam Bighill to their practice roster, the club announced Sunday. Bighill, 36, is a three-time winner of the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award, an eight-time West Division all-star and a six-time league all-star. The five-foot-nine, 230-pounder from Montesano, Wash., has won three Grey Cup rings – one as a member of the BC Lions and two with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. However, the 12-year veteran was released by the Bombers in January and has yet to suit up in 2025. He stated in a social media post following the release that he planned to keep playing. He began his career in 2011 with the Lions, who he spent six seasons with before playing for the NFL's New Orleans Saints in 2017. He returned to the CFL in 2018 with the Bombers, who he spent the following six seasons with. Bighill ranks sixth in CFL history with 939 defensive tackles. He also has 39 tackles for loss, 71 special-teams stops, 50 sacks, 15 interceptions including one pick-six, 11 fumble recoveries including three returned for touchdowns, 14 forced fumbles and 25 knockdowns. Tempo GM Monica Wright Rogers plotting out Toronto roster a year before WNBA debut

Monica Wright Rogers is just about ready to shift the Toronto Tempo into a new gear. Wright Rogers has been focused on the business side of the new WNBA franchise in her first four months as the Tempo's inaugural general manager. But in the coming months, she'll turn her attention to assembling the on-court product before Toronto's debut in the 2026 season. "It's been a very busy time, and I know that it's important right now to really get into the community, to learn the landscape of the sports industry here in Toronto and in Canada, and to continue to push the Tempo name out there," said Wright Rogers after speaking at a sports industry conference in downtown Toronto. "There is going to be a point where I shift focuses here and really start focusing on the task at hand, which is building out the Toronto Tempo's roster and staff." Toronto's roster will take shape over the next 12 months. Meet Monica Wright Rogers, the GM of the WNBA's newest team, the Toronto Tempo 4 months ago Duration 12:57 An as-yet unscheduled expansion draft after the 2025 regular season will be the first opportunity for the Tempo and Portland's new franchise to select some players. Then the regular draft and free agency in early 2026 will help Wright Rogers complete Toronto's lineup. "Before all that we are going to hire our head coach, so those are the big to do's on my list," said Wright Rogers, who played in the WNBA for seven seasons and was previously the assistant GM of the Phoenix Mercury. "I think it's all about the strategy and that's why it is important for me to understand the landscape here. "That plays a role in the strategy of what players would be the right fit for this organization and what staff will be appropriate to not only lead us on the court, but lead us off the court as well." Why WNBA draft could provide clearest route for Tempo to acquire franchise player in 2026 Wright Rogers was one of the panellists at the espnW Summit Canada, a conference on the growth of women's sport in downtown Toronto, on Wednesday. Prepping for veteran-centric league During her talk, she noted that the WNBA is a veteran-centric league, with rookies usually taking two or three years to fully develop and keep pace with their more experienced peers. As a result, she expects free agency to be the most important step in building the Tempo's roster. Wright Rogers doesn't anticipate that being an issue for the Tempo. "I'm looking for the best players, but I think Canada has some of the best players in the league," said Wright Rogers, noting that the WNBA's current group of international players is also very strong. "I think specifically WNBA players are not foreign to playing internationally because a lot of us have, when I was a player included, have played in the WNBA, and then we play internationally in the off-season. "It won't be a big pain point for players to come across the border in that way or come across the water in that way. They're used to it." Wright Rogers was named the GM of the Tempo on Feb. 20. She said she wasn't expecting such excitement around the announcement, but found it an encouraging sign for her future roster. "I love that because, to me, that warm embrace and appetite and just the hospitality that I feel, I know our staff and players are going to feel when they get here as well," she said, standing in a courtyard at the Evergreen Brick Works. "That makes me really happy, because it's like people enter this team and they come on board and they just get a big Canadian hug."

Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer to return for Blue Jays on Wednesday in Cleveland

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer (31) pitches the ball during first inning MLB baseball action against the Baltimore Orioles, in Toronto on Saturday, March 29, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Katsarov TORONTO — Mad Max is back. Max Scherzer is scheduled to be the Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitcher on Wednesday when they face the Guardians in Cleveland. Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed that Scherzer would return to the mound after Toronto's 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. 'That's a huge, huge addition to us, you know?' said Schneider. 'It's Max Scherzer. 'I'll take that any day of the week.' The 40-year-old surefire Hall of Famer signed a one-year, US$15.5 million contract with Toronto on Feb. 4. However, Scherzer only pitched three innings for the Blue Jays on March 29, allowing two runs on three hits. He left that game early with thumb inflammation on his throwing hand before being placed on the injured list the next day. Scherzer had a bullpen session earlier Sunday after two promising rehab starts with triple-A Buffalo last week. Schneider said Sunday's session was a productive workout for Scherzer, that included simulating conditions against the Guardians' potent lineup. 'I think that getting to 75 pitches in his last start is a good thing, and we've got to just monitor it as he goes,' said Schneider. 'The fact that he's feeling good throwing his stuff, he knows his stuff is where it should be. 'Really, really excited to have him back.' Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner as the best pitcher in his league and an eight-time all-star. He has a 216-112 record over his 18-year MLB career, with a lifetime 3.16 earned-run average and 3,408 strikeouts. 'Hopefully he's back with us the rest of the year,' said fellow starter Chris Bassitt. 'It solidifies our rotation a lot more where the bullpen doesn't have to be as relied upon as it has been. 'Hopefully we get Max back to what he usually does, and then take some pressure off of (Jose) Berrios, (Kevin Gausman) and I having to eat innings and things like that.' Eric Lauer will start for Toronto on Tuesday and Gausman will pitch on Thursday. The Blue Jays are 4-6 in their last 10 games, sitting third in the American League East but holding the second wild card berth. Cleveland is a half game out of the third wild card spot, held by the Seattle Mariners. By John Chidley-Hill.
