Canon and Al Khaja will collaborate on initiatives designed to inspire the next generation of filmmakers.
Al Khaja will work with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, a camera that offers significant advantages for independent filmmaking through its combination of compact size and performance.
Dubai, UAE – Canon Middle East, a leader in imaging solutions, has strengthened its partnership with award-winning filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja, the UAE's first woman film producer and director. This announcement coincides with International Women's Day 2025, whose theme, 'Accelerate Action,' aligns with Canon's commitment to advancing gender equality in visual storytelling.
The partnership builds on a successful collaboration that began in 2011, supporting female creative voices in the Middle East. Canon continues to support Al Khaja's groundbreaking work while championing greater representation in creative spaces where women are increasingly making their mark.
Venkatasubramanian (Subbu) Hariharan, Managing Director, Canon Middle East and Türkiye said, "Our partnership with Nayla Al Khaja represents the shared values that drive both her work and Canon's vision. Together, we've witnessed how powerful technology in the right creative hands can transform storytelling and inspire communities. Coinciding with International Women's Day 2025, we are reinforcing our commitment to accelerate positive change and create more pathways for women in film and content creation."
As part of this renewed partnership, Canon and Al Khaja will collaborate on a series of initiatives designed to inspire the next generation of filmmakers. Audiences will have opportunities to connect with Al Khaja at Canon events throughout the year, where she'll share insights from her experiences in the industry. These engagements will highlight how storytellers can leverage Canon's cinema technology to bring their creative visions to life.
The celebrated filmmaker will also create an educational series for Canon's "See No Limits" campaign, drawing on her extensive experience with Canon's cinema cameras to provide unique insights into professional filmmaking techniques.
"Working with Canon has been a cornerstone of my creative journey," said Al Khaja. "This partnership has provided me not just with exceptional tools but with a platform to amplify voices and stories that might otherwise go unheard. In an industry where women remain underrepresented, especially in technical and directorial roles, having the backing of a global leader like Canon sends a powerful message about the value of diverse perspectives in visual storytelling."
Nayla Al Khaja's relationship with Canon technology has been integral to her filmmaking journey, spanning multiple projects. She has directed 16 short films, with Animal and The Shadow currently streaming on Netflix.
The Shadow served as a precursor to her debut feature film, THREE, further exploring her signature psychological horror themes. Her first feature, THREE, premiered in UAE cinemas last year. The film stars Jefferson Hall (Halloween, Game of Thrones, Vikings) as Dr. Mark Holly, bringing international recognition to Emirati cinema. Most recently, Nayla Al Khaja wrapped production on her latest feature, BAAB, in February 2025. The film boasts a world-class team, including Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman and Rogier Stoffers (ASC) (The Kissing Booth, Quills), who served as Director of Photography, elevating BAAB's visual storytelling. Behind-the-scenes content was captured using a variety of cameras, including Canon gear paired with high-quality lenses, ensuring a cinematic and immersive visual experience. Throughout her career, Al Khaja has shared her technical expertise with emerging filmmakers in the region, often discussing how accessible technology can support creative vision. Her own productions have frequently utilized Canon equipment, which she has incorporated into her regular workflow for both commercial and personal projects.
In this next phase of collaboration, Al Khaja will work with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, a camera that offers significant advantages for independent filmmaking through its combination of size and performance. The system pairs a 45-megapixel stacked sensor with 8K 60p RAW video recording capabilities in a compact body. This is complemented by Canon's RF series lenses, designed specifically for the EOS R System with its reliable optics, efficient autofocus, and practical stabilization features—plus the useful Control Ring that allows for quick adjustments during production.
In the coming months, the partnership will unveil several exciting projects showcasing Al Khaja's unique creative vision powered by Canon technology. These collaborations aim to inspire emerging talent across the region, with a particular focus on empowering women to pursue careers in film and visual storytelling.

How MENA consumers shop during Father's Day

Ahead of Father's Day on June 21, MENA-based gifting marketplace Flowwow and Admitad, affiliate marketing platform, have released insights into shifting gifting habits in the MENA region, based on over 55,000 online purchases. Admitad analysts studied the behaviour of online shoppers in MENA countries (with the UAE and KSA analysed separately) during the 'calm period' of June 20–22, 2023 and May 20–22, 2024 and 'the peak period' June 20–22, 2024. In Saudi Arabia, 25 per cent more gifts for men on Father's Day were purchased online, choosing thoughtful and family-oriented options, the study reveals. Online orders during the 2024 Father's Day period across MENA rose 16 per cent year-over-year, with Saudi Arabia leading at a 30 per cent rise. According to Flowwow's market study, Father's Day 2024 saw a 129 per cent increase in gift orders year-over-year, with gross merchandise value (GMV) up 121 per cent. The overall trend of gifting to men continues to grow, showing a more than 20 per cent year-over-year increase, the study reveals. Looking ahead to 2025, Flowwow forecasts a 30 per cent increase in Father's Day sales in Saudi Arabia, with strong demand for gift sets including hamper boxes and gourmet sets, as well as themed Father's Day cakes and premium chocolates. From material to meaningful Customers in Kuwait and UAE spent the most on gifts for dads, with the highest average order values (AOV) at $114 and $57.2 respectively. They were followed by Jordan ($38.6), Egypt ($31.6), and Saudi Arabia ($29.1), where spending was more modest. The average order value for gifts dropped by 3.4 per cent to $73.75, approximately 12 per cent lower than other major holidays like Mother's Day or International Women's Day, which the report suggests is due to a preference for personal and meaningful options over costly gifting in MENA. 'Father's Day is becoming more meaningful in the MENA region, especially in Saudi Arabia, where gifting for men is growing alongside a strong cultural appreciation for fatherhood. It's not just about fathers any more, people are celebrating all the important male figures in their lives, including stepdads, and grandfathers, showing that their presence truly matters to families across the GCC,' said Slava Bogdan, CEO at Flowwow. New e-commerce trends on Father's Day According to research by Flowwow and Admitad, Google Trends confirms the rising relevance of Father's Day in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East. The search volume for Father's Day-related content – such as quotes, greetings, cards, and gift ideas – surged more than 30 times this week from June 15. Google Shopping data also shows a peak in gift-related searches ahead of the celebration, indicating that more people are preparing for the holiday with purposeful intention. 'Father's Day is quickly becoming one of the key drivers of e-commerce growth in Saudi Arabia and in the MENA region. Between June 20 and 22, we saw a 16 per cent year-over-year increase in orders across the region, with Saudi Arabia as a digitally advanced country showing the strongest growth – a 30 per cent surge in order volume during the holiday period,' said Anna Gidirim, CEO of Admitad. According to data from Admitad, the best-selling gift categories for men in MENA include home and tools (30 per cent), electronics (22 per cent), and automotive accessories (9 per cent). In Saudi Arabia, customers favoured electronics and gadgets even more, accounting for 28 per cent of all sales. Overall, family-oriented holidays like Father's Day are becoming more significant in the GCC gifting market. Flowwow claims. Consumers are making emotional and meaningful purchases as they search for ways to connect more deeply with loved ones – often choosing simple, thoughtful gifts or shared family experiences over expensive items.

Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers strengthens its sustainability goals by partnering with Canon Climate Project Contribution Program

The program enables companies to compensate for GHG emissions that arise during the use of Canon products by investing in environmental projects that save the equivalent GHG emissions elsewhere. In addition to offering compensation for unavoidable emissions from the use of Canon printers, companies can also reduce emissions by using efficient workflow software like uniFLOW. Abu Dhabi, UAE -- Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers has announced a partnership with Canon Middle East to implement a Climate Contribution Project focused on compensating for unavoidable emissions related to Canon-based print operations at the hotel. This project reinforces both organizations' commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices. The initiative will compensate for approximately 5,610 kg of CO2 emissions generated annually by Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers' 13 Canon printers, which process an estimated 430,530 print volumes. The program enables the luxury hotel to offset the environmental impact of its printer-related ink, paper and electricity consumption through investments in certified climate projects worldwide. "At Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, we recognize our responsibility as a luxury hospitality leader to minimize our environmental footprint," said Savino Leone, General Manager of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers. "Working together with Canon allows us to maintain operational excellence while supporting meaningful climate action. It's a significant step in our sustainability journey and aligns perfectly with our commitment to positively impacting the communities we serve." The initiative takes a holistic approach to more sustainable print operations. It begins with a comprehensive print and scan audit to identify optimization opportunities across the hotel's Canon printer fleet. By implementing more efficient print devices and processes, the iconic facility can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions at the source. Khaled Antoun, B2B Regional Sales Director at Canon Middle East, said: "We are delighted to welcome Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers to our Climate Project Contribution program. This partnership demonstrates how the hospitality industry can embrace innovative solutions to address environmental challenges. The initiative embodies our corporate philosophy of Kyosei – living and working together for the common good – and showcases our joint commitment to building a more sustainable future." The climate compensation projects supported through this initiative span multiple continents and include wind energy developments in India and Indonesia, cookstove programs in Uganda that combat deforestation, and various reforestation efforts across Germany, South America, England, and Switzerland. Each project is certified by Gold Standard, the internationally recognized verification body, with Climate Partner - an independent solutions provider for climate action - providing independent authentication to ensure credibility and transparency. Canon's commitment extends to helping Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers minimize its carbon footprint through efficient, low-carbon products and smart tools like uniFLOW. These technologies help prevent unnecessary printing, track device usage, and reduce waste – further advancing the hotel's sustainability objectives. The partnership between Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers and Canon serves as a model for responsible business practices in the hospitality industry, demonstrating how luxury experiences can coexist with environmental responsibility. It reinforces both companies' dedication to creating positive environmental and social impact while meeting the growing demand for more sustainable business operations.
