NGO renews push to include 'Double Six' tragedy in Sabah's history lessons
KOTA KINABALU: NGO Sunduvan Sabah plans to meet the Sabah Education director to discuss ways of incorporating the "Double Six" tragedy into the state's history curriculum.
Its chairman Aloysius Danim Siap said the June 6, 1976 plane crash that claimed the lives of key state leaders should be properly recognised as a turning point in Sabah's history.
'By including the Double Six tragedy in the syllabus, we ensure future generations remember and learn from it,' he said here on Wednesday (May 28), reiterating a call he made last year as the anniversary of the incident approached.

Siap said the NGO will also publish a book with verified historical records, testimonies from the victims' families, and analysis of the social and political impact of the crash.
'The book is intended to serve as an educational reference and to support broader public awareness,' he said.
He also invited the public to attend the Double Six Memorial Ceremony at the Double Six Memorial Park in Sembulan at 9am on June 6, and wear black as a mark of respect.
The crash involved a GAF Nomad aircraft that went down near Sembulan shortly before landing, killing all 11 people on board.

The victims included then chief minister Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens, his eldest son Johari, state finance minister Datuk Salleh Sulong, local government minister Datuk Peter Mojuntin, communications and works minister Datuk Chong Thien Vun, and assistant minister to the chief minister Datuk Darius Binion.
Also on board were state economic planning unit director Dr Syed Hussein Wafa; Ishak Atan, the private secretary to then-finance minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, and Koperal Mohd Said, a bodyguard.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Gandhi J. Nathan with first officer Soejono as co-pilot.

Bernama chairman Wong Chun Wai named national journalism laureate
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai has been named the National Journalism Laureate at the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-Petronas Journalism Awards ceremony held here on Friday (June 20) night. Malaysia's first Historical Tree Trail to be opened in Sandakan
All 42 historically significant trees along the Sandakan Heritage Trail are each tagged and QR-coded to enhance visitor experience and promote eco-heritage tourism. KOTA KINABALU: Already renowned for its rich history, Sandakan is set to launch Malaysia's first Historical Tree Trail, which will be officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records on June 28. Developed in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department, the 3km Sandakan Heritage Trail features 42 historically significant trees, each tagged and QR-coded to enhance visitor experience and promote eco-heritage tourism. The achievement was revealed during a courtesy call by Lai King Hang, the founder and chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, to the Sabah Forestry Department's chief conservator of forests, Datuk Frederick Kugan. "This is an excellent initiative that reflects innovation in both conservation and heritage tourism," said Kugan, adding that the trail represents a new benchmark in eco-education and community involvement. The launch event, which is expected to draw over 200 participants from all walks of life, will begin at Masjid Jamik and make a key stop at Agnes Keith's House, where the Malaysia Book of Records certificate will be officially presented. The trail will be officiated by the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) president, Walter Kenson. Organised by the Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee and the Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN), with full support from the Sandakan Municipal Council and various voluntary groups, the event represents a significant milestone for Sandakan's growing eco-tourism sector. Lai noted that in addition to the historic trees, the public will also enjoy views of restored colonial buildings such as Agnes Keith's House, as well as places of worship including the 100-year-old Masjid Jamik, the Goddess of Mercy Chinese Temple, St. Michael's and All Angels Church, and the Sam Sing Kung (Three Saints) Temple. The two-hour walk along the Sandakan Heritage Trail will conclude at the Sandakan Heritage Museum and include several other cultural landmarks along the way. Also present at the courtesy call were the department's deputy chief conservator of forests, Dr Arthur Chung, senior officers, a senior team member of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, as well as representatives from STAN and the Sabah Society Sandakan.

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, held a memorial ceremony, on Friday to commemorate the 'Double Six' tragedy at Taman Chong Tain Vun, Jalan Trig Hill. The event drew leaders and community representatives, including Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee, MPS President Walter Kenson, several State Assemblymen, agency officials, NGOs and family members of the late Datuk Chong Tain Vun. Walter said the memorial was a joint initiative between MPS and Vivian Wong to remember one of Sabah's darkest days and in particular, to recognise the contributions of a prominent figure from this district who died in the crash. 'He was a respected lawyer and public servant. This ceremony is a step toward ensuring the tragedy and the people we lost, are never forgotten,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all who attended, regardless of political affiliation, and noted the strong support from local organisations despite the short notice.
