Yankees activate Luke Weaver after the right-hander missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees activated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the injured list Friday after he missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring.
Weaver was injured warming up before a June 1 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break.

Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game on Tuesday after throwing side sessions.
Weaver has a 1.05 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 24 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27.
A 31-year-old right-hander who can become a free agent this autumn, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September.
From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to appear on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021, though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18.

Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5.
The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Sandridge was called up Thursday when Yerry De los Santos went on the injured list with right elbow discomfort.

Just keep going out there and doing your thing.' Volpe's batting average has dropped from .251 to .228 over the span, which includes seven strikeouts and one walk. The 24-year-old's .710 OPS is the worst among qualified Yankees hitters. 'Tough night,' Boone said. 'Tough few games here. Just got to get on time. Hitting, as hard as it is, it's as simple as that sometimes. I feel like he's a little late getting into position. Therefore, you're not firing at your best, and you're not swinging at the pitches exactly how you want in a strong position. Just got to get himself on time and then he'll take off.' Before the game, Boone said he thought Volpe might have had a mechanical issue at the plate in which he might have been 'getting stuck a little bit,' and it might have been affecting Volpe's swing decisions. Judge went 3-for-4 with a home run and a walk, perhaps the sign of a turnaround after he had been on a 4-for-31 stretch (.129) entering Friday. Boone said he thought Judge might have made an adjustment at the plate, raising his hands a bit higher than he had previously, and that the difference might have helped him. Boone said it seemed to have helped Judge in 'getting to that really strong position, to now you're getting your good swing off, you're through the zone a lot.' Judge seems to be holding his hand several inches higher before he swung Friday than he did Thursday. But Judge didn't get into specifics. 'I'm making adjustments every day,' he said. 'Had a good game, so (Boone) probably noticed a little change. But I make adjustments all the time. … There's so many that I can't narrow one.' The Yankees hoped Weaver would hold a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and they would use Williams either in the ninth inning with a tied score or if they went ahead. It didn't work out, as Weaver surrendered a solo shot to Ramón Urias and then gave up another run. Williams stayed in the bullpen. Weaver lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits and a walk. Advertisement It was Weaver's first appearance after spending three weeks on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and earlier in the day, Boone said Weaver would not simply be given back the closer job he held before the injury. Williams had been pitching well in the role in Weaver's absence, and Boone said the plan was for Weaver and Williams to share the role. Weaver said he felt fine despite struggling. He wasn't sure if he could blame the poor performance on rust. 'It's hard to tell,' he said. 'The easy answer is probably yes, but no. I felt like my stuff was as good as it's been all year, if not better.' He added he believed his changeup was moving differently from how it had in the past. 'It was breaking a lot in the dirt,' he said. 'That's what I was struggling with.'
