Arsenal face Rodrygo transfer wait as Real Madrid's stance on sale emerges
Arsenal have identified Rodrygo as a top summer target in their search for a quality left winger but it may take time for a deal for the Real Madrid superstar to materialise
Arsenal may have to play a waiting game to land Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo. The Gunners are chasing an elite level left winger and the Brazil international is on their radar as an ambitious target for this summer.
Real Madrid may be willing to allow Rodrygo to leave this summer - but would demand in excess of £70m and his wage demands would make him one of Arsenal 's top earners. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has had conversations with a raft of top clubs, agents and stars this summer and there is a belief that Real Madrid may be willing to do business.
Rodrygo, 24, may also fancy a fresh challenge even though he currently makes up one of football's most fearsome forward lines with Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe.
But Arsenal know that Real Madrid's stance may soften as the transfer window drags on and if they have to offload or lower their demands then it is likely to be later in the window.
It would be a gamble as they have already seen another top target, Athletic Bilbao' Nico Williams, get lined up for a move to Barcelona.
But there is a genuine interest in Rodrygo and it now remains to be seen whether they can progress on it and get encouragement - or have to look elsewhere. The left winger, though, remains a top priority.
Arsenal will also have to balance the potential cost of a top left winger with the price of a new No9 with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko emerging as the favoured target.
They have courted Sesko for more than 18 months, they nearly got him last summer and have put in groundwork to land the Slovenian striker.
But RB Leipzig have been holding firm on a price in excess of £70m while Berta is also known for chasing multiple targets and then proceeding with the best deal.
That is why Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyökeres is still a strong possibility and Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins is also on the radar because Arsenal want to strengthen in several positions and cannot blow all their money on one target.
They have already lined up a £51m move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and that deal will be confirmed and announced imminently.
Berta has also been looking at the defence and the chance to shake it up and improve the back-up options.

Real Madrid edge closer to Club World Cup knockout rounds after impressive victory over Pachuca
Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card for Raul Asencio to move closer to the knockout stages of the Club World Cup after a 3-1 win over Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte. Asencio was sent off in the seventh minute for hauling down Salomon Rondon and things looked bleak for the Spanish giants, who had been held to a frustrating draw by Al Hilal in their opening match, and were missing Kylian Mbappe due to illness. But after soaking up a spell of pressure, Real broke the deadlock through Jude Bellingham in the 35th minute before Arda Guler doubled the lead ahead of half-time. Federico Valverde volleyed in a third with 20 minutes left, before the Mexicans grabbed a late consolation through Elias Montiel's deflected effort. Real Madrid conclude their Group H fixtures against Red Bull Salzburg in Philadelphia on June 26. Kenan Yildiz scored twice as Juventus seized control of Group G with a 4-1 win over Wydad Casablanca. The Italian side, who opened their campaign by thumping Al Ain 5-0, were tested by the Moroccans for whom Thembinkosi Lorch's effort sparked thunderous celebrations. Yildiz had a hand in Juve's opener after six minutes when his shot was deflected in by Wydad defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil. Yildiz doubled Juve's advantage after 16 minutes when he lashed int the top corner from the edge of the box, before Lorch gave Wydad hope with a cool chip to reduce the deficit after 25 minutes. Wydad pushed for an equaliser but Juventus rode out with the storm with Andrea Cambiaso striking the woodwork before Yildiz grabbed his side's third after 70 minutes and Dusan Vlahovic completed victory with an injury time penalty.

Xabi Alonso gets a taste of what to expect from Jude Bellingham while Trent Alexander-Arnold looked assured, writes AADAM PATEL as 10-man Real Madrid win
There was a moment in the 28th minute, here in the stifling heat of North Carolina, when Jude Bellingham absolutely lost it at Arda Guler for losing the ball. With Real Madrid down to ten men against Pachuca after Raul Asencio's early sending off, they were under the cosh against the Mexican side, with a certain Salomon Rondon causing all sorts of problems and the frustrations were beginning to boil over. It was a staggering watch as Xabi Alonso 's side were totally out of sync and looked lost against a side that finished eighth in the Mexican league last season. For much of the first half hour, the 20-year-old Guler was on the back end of Bellingham's anger and yet by the break, Madrid were two goals ahead thanks to Bellingham and Guler, with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing a major part in Guler's goal too. For Alonso, it was an early indicator of the personalities that he will have to manage here but also an ample reminder of the devastating quality his players possess. Alonso doesn't need telling about what it takes to succeed at Real Madrid. The 43-year-old played for the club between 2009 and 2014 and knows first-hand about the weight of expectation and the influence that certain individuals can have for Los Blancos. In his early days here, he'll be aware too that how he deals with the likes of Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr amongst others will be inevitably integral to his own success. On the eve of this clash, Alonso praised Guler, saying, 'He's one of those players who must be close to the ball. He's one player that is special because the more touches he has, the better he will play and the better the team plays.' Guler, like Bellingham, is a magnificent talent and Alonso, who wants to increase his gametime, will know that to get the best out of the Turkish international, he must be allowed to flourish. As for Trent Alexander-Arnold, this was an assured display, both in defence and in attack as the full-back regularly came into the middle of the pitch and was heavily involved with the ball. 'He has done it at Liverpool and in the national team. He is a different full-back, not just from the outside lane. He can go inside a little bit and associate. What happens around is important. We have to work on it, but having his foot and his understanding of the game is very positive,' Alonso said pre-match. His fizzing ball across goal in the lead up to Guler's goal will do wonders for his confidence after a shaky start to life against Al-Hilal and all in all, he showed glimpses of his class with the way he dribbled out from the back and held his own, defensively. When he was replaced in the 78th minute, the applause and the smiles summed it up. Charlotte was a sea of white on Sunday, with Madrid fans wherever you went. They had travelled from all over the States and beyond to catch a rare glimpse of their stars. On the resale market, tickets were going for around $300 and the punters patiently queued for hours in the sweltering heat. They waited, knowing what was at the other end. It is early doors of course but Alonso will be hoping for some of that patience too. After two unconvincing displays against Al-Hilal and Pachuca, albeit in extremely difficult conditions, there is very little of the rock and roll that Alonso has spoken about. In fairness, this is a side in desperate need of a few weeks off. For context, here was Jude Bellingham in his 61st match of the never-ending 2024-25 season while the likes of Mbappe, Eduardo Camavinga, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy alongside others were all out. When the players did their individual entrances ten minutes before kick-off, the Madrid players were ludicrously made to keep their jackets on. They started like they were playing with jackets too, with Rondon initially too hot to handle as he fired wide on the half volley from a corner. In the seventh minute, Dean Huijsen played Rondon onside and Raul Asencio was sent off after he pulled the 35-year-old down just outside the box. Agustin Palavecino fired the resulting free-kick wide but Pachuca really should have taken the lead shortly after, with Thibaut Courtois rescuing Madrid with a fine double save. First, Kenedy's effort was parried out before Courtois kept out the rebound from Alan Bautista. Madrid were all over the place but the cooling break around the half-hour mark seemed to be the turning point as Alonso rallied his troops. Bellingham combined with Fran Garcia to give Madrid the lead with a wonderful left-footed finish before Alexander-Arnold teed up Gonzalo Garcia, who set up Guler for Madrid's second. Federico Valverde added a third in the 70th minute but there was time for Elias Montiel to pull one back for Pachuca, with ten minutes to go. It was the least they deserved as they peppered Thibaut Courtois's goal, with 25 shots and 11 on target, but lacked that clinical edge. For Alonso, it was a first win as Madrid boss but again, a performance that left more questions than answers.

Atletico Madrid reject chance to sign Arsenal star in summer transfer window
Atletico Madrid have turned down the chance to sign Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey as a free agent this summer, according to reports. Partey's contract is due to expire this month on June 30 with the player believed to be seeking a fresh challenge once he leaves the Emirates. It's thought Arsenal had been hopeful of negotiating a renewal before talks broke down with the 31-year-old, who has been at the club since 2020. While Arsenal are already eyeing up a replacement, it remains to be seen which team Ghanaian star Partey may join in the summer transfer window. It appears that one side have been already been ruled out – Partey's former club Atletico – who he left to join the Gunners five years ago. That's according to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, who report Atletico have rejected the idea of bringing Partey back into Diego Simeone's squad. It's believed that Atletico are instead keen to wrap up a deal for Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso, worth around €40m (£34.2m). Partey recently revealed that he had agreed to renew his contract with Atletico in the summer of 2020 – but it fell through as Atletico's president Enrique Cerezo refused to pay his agent a 10 per cent commission fee. Arsenal then swooped in at the last minute on deadline day, having originally given up on a deal. 'Transitioning from Spain to London was the most difficult [period] of my life,' Partey told Ghanian outlet 3Sports this month. Partey established himself as a key player under Mikel Arteta, playing a total of 52 games across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign. In total, the defensive midfielder has featured 167 times for Arsenal to date, chipping in with nine goals and seven assists. Martin Zubimendi, who is set to join Arsenal from Real Sociedad this summer, will essentially replace Partey in Arteta's squad. But Arsenal will also look to bring in another defensive midfielder if and when Partey's exit is confirmed, especially given Jorginho is leaving too. More Trending Sevilla star Lucien Agoume is reported to be on Arsenal's list of potential options. Brentford captain Christian Norgaard is also being considered, according to The Mirror. Last month, Arsenal manager Arteta was asked if he wanted Partey to stay at the club and said: 'Yeah. 'Consistency-wise, it's been his best season. I think the way he's played, performed, his availability has been exceptional and he's a really important player for us.'
