'Pressure building each game' to hit 12-point mark
Another standard week from Southampton Football Club. Another loss and another collapse to condemn us to our 26th league defeat - a 3-0 humbling at home to Aston Villa.The search for those two more points rolls on to next week. Will we get them under new interim boss Simon Rusk? If the Villa game plan was anything to go by, then it is not looking likely.It was clear from the off on Saturday that Rusk had set his team up to defend at all costs and scrape a 0-0, drawing conclusions that he must get these points by any means necessary. Does that ever work?During Rusk's first stint as interim back in December, he took charge against Fulham at Craven Cottage. The set-up was a carbon copy of last weekend's. Three at the back, a four-man midfield and two strikers, but with relative success. We played out a 0-0, which in the grand scheme of things, turned out to be one of our biggest positives from this whole campaign.Up against Villa, it failed. However, it took the Champions League quarter-finalists 73 minutes to break the deadlock. We did soak up Villa pressure for large portions of the game and faced 25 shots and heavy possession.There is no reason to assume Rusk will switch things up for the remainder of the season and should expect more of the same at West Ham next. For a team that has conceded the most in the division and our lack of goal threat, this may get even worse.If/when we reach that magic 12-point mark, we may see Rusk play a more exciting brand of football. Maybe the likes of newly-debuted Jay Robinson will get more minutes. But it is a very difficult situation for the interim boss. The pressure is building each game, and with Manchester City, Arsenal and a Goodison Park swansong on the agenda, games against West Ham and Leicester may be our last hopes.Find more from Ray Hunt at the In that Number podcast, external

CHARLOTTE, June 22 (Reuters) - Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed on Sunday that he will undergo surgery to address a long-standing shoulder issue after the conclusion of the Club World Cup in the United States. The 21-year-old, who has been managing the injury since 2023, has played through discomfort for both club and country. Real Madrid have scheduled the operation to follow the tournament, which concludes later this month. Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, has frequently been seen wearing strapping on his shoulder during matches. The injury first flared up in a match against Rayo Vallecano, forcing him to miss two games for both Real Madrid and England late in 2023. 'I'm losing a lot of weight from sweating so much, and I've decided that I'll have surgery after the tournament. I've been waiting for a long time, and my patience is running out, but the physios and doctors have been incredible. I just want to feel free,' he added. Despite his discomfort, Bellingham has been a key figure for Real Madrid since joining the club in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Dortmund, helping the Spanish giants win the LaLiga and Champions League double in his first campaign. The timeline for Bellingham's return remains unclear.

Refugee football tournament held in Newport for Refugee Week
A refugee football tournament was held in Newport on Thursday, June 19, at the GOL Centre in Lliswerry. The event was organised to mark Refugee Week and was led by a group of around 40 to 50 young asylum seekers and refugees who regularly attend football sessions at Newport International Sports Village. Eight teams competed, with winners crowned in both Champions League and Europa League-style finals. Lucy Donovan, Newport Live's positive futures development manager, said: "This event gives our regular members a chance to play competitively, succeed, and win a sought-after award. "For us, the engagement with the group is vital in supporting them to access positive experiences through sport and youth engagement. "Attending a safe, accessible environment weekly enables young people to access support networks through a relationship with trusted adults. "As the event coincides with Refugee Week, we wanted to use this opportunity to celebrate our diverse communities in Newport and bring some excitement to the lives of young people. "We'd also like to thank everyone involved in the tournament as well as in our day-to-day work including our partners and all our supporters." The weekly community football sessions are run in partnership by Newport Live Positive Futures, The Gap Wales, and Newport City Council Youth and Play Service. Byron James, operations director at The Gap Wales, said: "We're incredibly grateful to Newport Live and Newport Youth and Play for their support in making this football tournament possible. "Their backing has allowed us to deliver a high-quality event for a group of boys who truly deserve a special experience and the chance to showcase their footballing talents. "Football is so much more than a game–it brings people together, builds friendships, teaches discipline and teamwork, and has a huge positive impact on physical and mental well-being. "It's fantastic to be part of something that celebrates all of that, while supporting asylum seekers and refugees in our community." The Football Association of Wales also supported the event by offering tickets to an international match.
