Xfinity Mobile Arena: Wells Fargo Center signage removed as South Philly stadium rebrand begins

Comcast Spectacore and Harris-Blitzer announced in May that the arena will be renamed the Xfinity Mobile Arena.
While preparations are underway, the name change won't be official until September.
PHILADELPHIA - The Wells Fargo Center signage was removed from the side of the South Philadelphia arena as it prepares to rebrand into the Xfinity Mobile Arena in September.
The name change was announced in May, and comes after the Sixers ditched contentious plans to build an arena in Center City after striking a deal with Comcast.
This will be the fifth time the arena has changed names since it opened in 1996 as CoreStates Center.
The backstory
The Wells Fargo Center will be renamed to the Xfinity Mobile Arena, Comcast Spectacore and Harris-Blitzer Sports and Entertainment announced in May.
This name change will officially take place in September and the naming rights will last through the Sixers and Flyers 2030-2031 season, official said.
This will be the fifth name change the arena has undergone since it first opened in 1996, known first as the Spectrum II and then officially as CoreStates Center.
"This arena is an anchor in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex and broader region," Chairman & CEO of Comcast Spectacor Dan Hilferty previously said.

The name change happened after the Sixers and Comcast struck a deal for the team to remain in South Philly, ending controversial plans for a Center City arena.
The team had approval from Philadelphia City Council and the support of Mayor Cherelle Parker for "76 Place" that would have seen the Fashion District demolished.
These plans caused fierce push back from locals, who feared that the 18,500 seat arena would uproot the Chinatown community.

With the 2025 NBA draft inching closer, a lot of eyes are on Rutgers star Ace Bailey who is projected as a top 5 pick in this class behind Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper. The Philadelphia 76ers hold the No. 3 pick in the draft and a lot of projections have Bailey going to Philadelphia, but his strategy has been confusing. Bailey had a workout scheduled with the Sixers, but he decided to cancel at the last minute which sent a few shockwaves throughout the league. It was a peculiar decision when also considering he has not worked out for any team ahead of the draft. It's strange to see such a highly rated prospect not work out for any team before the draft. Former Sixers guard Lou Williams hopped on "Run It Back" and gave his thoughts on Bailey's strategy: There is a handshake deal behind the scenes somewhere. There is a team that wants him and he wants to be at that team and with that he's OK with the narrative going out that he doesn't want to work. Bailey averaged 17.6 points for the Scarlet Knights in the 2024-25 season and will look to take that scoring ability to the NBA level as he moves forward to the next step in his career. As for the Sixers, they still have to do their due diligence in order to prepare for June 25 and look to get right for the night. Whether the move is to take Bailey, Baylor's VJ Edgecombe, or trade down remains to be seen.

Former Sixers forward confused by prospect Ace Bailey's draft process
Rutgers star Ace Bailey figures to be a high draft pick in the 2025 NBA draft on June 25 as he is one of the top prospects after Duke phenom Cooper Flagg and Rutgers teammate Dylan Harper. With that logic, he should be selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 3 pick, but it isn't a foregone conclusion. Bailey, named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2024-25, had a workout scheduled with the Sixers, but he canceled at the last minute. Philadelphia could still select Bailey at No. 3 as a lack of workout has not deterred them before--Tyrese Maxey in 2020 and Jared McCain in 2024--but it is strange that Bailey has not only not worked out for the Sixers, but he hasn't worked out for anybody. Former Philadelphia forward Marcus Morris Sr. admitted some confusion over Bailey's draft process: If I'm Ace Bailey, I'm working out. I'm like 'I'm a basketball player. This is what I do'… I want to answer those questions for myself. I want to get in front of people. Even if they don't draft me, or if you don't draft me to this team, you still have a long career. You can still end up back there… You've gotta think about the long-term game. This is one year. This is the draft. You can't tell somebody 'I'm not trying to workout'. These are all NBA teams, and that's for your future. You're probably going to be doing the workout by yourself. How easy can that be? Knock down some Js, work to my strengths, and I can speak on my own behalf, so in my opinion, Ace Bailey is a little bit over the top. I can't say that it's him. It might be his representation. The Sixers still have some due diligence to do on a lot of these prospects with the draft still five days away, but it's obvious that Bailey has a lot of talent regardless of his lack of a workout with any team. That hasn't deterred the Sixers before, so one has to wonder if history will repeat itself in this situation.
