Infra projects worth Rs 24,000 crore on the anvil to decongest Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta

Indian Express04-06-2025

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a Rs 24,000-crore infrastructure overhaul for the Capital.
Addressing a press conference Wednesday, Gupta said major arterial roads — Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road — have now been handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These roads will be upgraded into signal-free corridors with complete supporting infrastructure, including drainage, side lanes, and real-time monitoring systems.
'Earlier, multiple agencies led to fragmented execution and chronic waterlogging. Now, NHAI will be the single-point authority, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,' she said.
The press conference was held following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The meeting was also attended by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Union MoS Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Cabinet Ministers, MPs, and senior officials from key departments.
Gupta underlined several critical initiatives aimed at easing congestion and reducing pollution. These include:
-A 7-km underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road
-An elevated road from INA to the airport (eventually connecting Faridabad and Gurgaon)
-Extensions of Urban Extension Road-II linking Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route.
-A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport.
– A 20-km link road from Inderlok Metro Station along the Munak Canal to Sonipat has been proposed. Gupta said this new route would relieve traffic from Mukarba Chowk and benefit thousands of daily commuters travelling between Delhi and Haryana.
The CM said the NHAI is currently executing road and transport projects worth Rs 35,000 crore across the Capital. This comes in addition to Rs 64,000-crore worth of completed works, covering 1,578 km of roads. Furthermore, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for upcoming projects worth Rs 24,000 crore — spanning 128 km — have been prepared and await rollout.
The NHAI has also sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Under Bridges (RUBs) to remove bottlenecks near railway crossings.
Gupta expressed her gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari, stating, 'With Rs 1.25 lakh crore worth of decongestion projects in Delhi, the Centre has shown unparalleled commitment to transforming Delhi into a clean, green, and world-class city.'
The Chief Minister also highlighted NHAI's eco-friendly practices, such as using inert solid waste and construction debris from Delhi's landfills in road construction.

3 years after it was carved, no office for P-East ward

Mumbai: Three years after splitting P-North Ward into two, BMC is still struggling to find an office for the newly carved P-East ward. With BMC elections around the corner, BJP has demanded that BMC acquire a plot of land in Malad (east) to construct a new office for P-East ward. In 2023, the state govt said BMC was awaiting a 40,000 sq ft constructed area in a Slum Rehabilitation Authority project, but it didn't work out. So far, the new ward office hasn't started, and residents have to visit the old P-North ward office for routine work. P-North ward, which earlier covered Malad, Goregaon, and Kandivli, was the most populous ward in the city with a population of around 13 lakh. Following a demand from former BJP corporator Vinod Mishra, minister Ashish Shelar of BJP last week asked BMC officials to construct the new P-East ward office. "Despite the state govt issuing orders, BMC has delayed constructing a new ward office. As a result, people from Malad (east) have to spend a long time besides having to pay Rs 100 to get to the ward office in Malad (west). So we have demanded a ward office in Malad (east). A private plot reserved for a municipal chowky is ideal for the P-East ward office as it is close to Malad (east) railway station, Pathanwadi bus stop, and Dindoshi Metro station," said Mishra, who is following up on the ward office issue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo BMC officials said that some temporary offices offering some civic services are operating from Ram Leela Maidan, Malad (east). "But this office is also not accessible and takes more than 45 minutes to reach from Malad (east). For all other services, residents have to go to the old P-North ward office, in Malad (west), near Liberty Garden. It is more than 5 km away from Malad (east). Also, there is only one assistant municipal commissioner for the old and new wards," Mishra said. "The fastest option is to acquire this private plot and construct the ward office. We have asked BMC to temporarily start a functional ward office for basic amenities like war works and solid waste management in an existing structure," Mishra said. BMC split up the former combined ward into two since providing civic amenities — water supply, sanitation, and citizen services was a challenge due to the vast area and high population.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, joined the yoga session, enhancing the event's significance. At the Saturday morning celebration in Pattadakal, a renowned tourist spot, minister Joshi performed yoga alongside local officials and representatives. The participants demonstrated various yoga postures during the session. The minister highlighted yoga as a valuable practice rooted in ancient spiritual, physical, and mental wellness traditions. He emphasised its role in strengthening the body, mind, and soul whilst promoting global harmony. He noted that yoga exemplifies action and proficiency in karma yoga. As referenced in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat', this year's International Yoga Day theme focuses on 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. The minister highlighted yoga's contribution towards establishing India's prominence in the 21st century. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo He noted that International Yoga Day's worldwide celebration demonstrates the global recognition of India's yoga heritage. The Archaeological Survey of India organised the event, which saw participation from MP PC Gaddigoudar, MLC Hanumanth Nirani, DC Sangappa M, ZP CEO Shashidhar Kurer, SP Amarnath Reddy, ASI Senior Officer Navratna Kumar Pathak, and other officials. Accuses Congress of fostering corruption Pralhad Joshi, speaking in Pattadakal, directly accused the Congress of establishing and fostering corruption. Following the disclosure of the Housing Corporation corruption audio, Rayareddy acknowledged substantial corruption during Congress administration, leading to the audio's subsequent release. He further said the North Karnataka legislators highlighted the absence of development funds while pointing out widespread corruption. The audio emerged yesterday. The BJP's statements are consistently dismissed by opponents claiming the party lacks accomplishments. The response from the chief minister remains anticipated, particularly given his statements about monetary requirements for housing allocation. A Congress legislator has brought attention to an ongoing transfer scandal, whilst contractors have labelled it a 60% govt. The UPA govt, under Sonia Gandhi's leadership, faced corruption allegations totalling Rs 12 lakh crore. There appears to be uncertainty in accountability, with neither senior nor junior officials being questioned about corruption. "With Sonia and Rahul being out on bail, there remains no authority to question them. Consequently, the Congress party's statements lack credibility and attention from the public," the Union minister accused.

Want similar volume of water across Yamuna in city: Rekha

New Delhi: Reiterating her govt's commitment to rejuvenating the Yamuna, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday that she wanted a consistent flow of water throughout the river's stretch in the capital. Speaking to reporters during an International Day of Yoga event at Sonia Vihar Water Sports Club — where the river maintains a continuous flow till Wazirabad — Gupta said her aim was to ensure the entire stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi had a similar volume of water. Delhi govt held yoga events at 11 locations in the city, attended by ministers, BJP MPs, MLAs, councillors, bureaucrats and other prominent people. Gupta was joined by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and minister Kapil Mishra in Sonia Vihar. On the choice of the venue, Gupta said they wanted to show people that the cleaning work of the river was underway. " Yamuna river is the symbol of our faith, but the previous govts ignored it. They did not work to clean it. But in the four months that we have been in power, we have worked to clean it," she claimed. "People ask me, where will the cruise run? I want to tell them, the cruise will run on this river where students performed yoga today on boats," CM said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo She also criticised the previous AAP govt and said it associated yoga with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and did not celebrate the occasion. "If they associate yoga with PM, what can we do? Tomorrow, the AAP leader might give up his food if he sees PM associated with it. After seeing the BJP govt in Delhi, he has left the national capital," she jibed. Delhi assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta participated in a yoga session at Lodhi Gardens. He reiterated the importance of collective action and awareness to build a healthier, more resilient nation rooted in the timeless wisdom of yoga. Education minister Ashish Sood said that for the first time, the city govt officially celebrated Yoga Day in the capital. "The 11th International Yoga Day was marked simultaneously at 11 locations, with more than 20,000 yoga practitioners taking part in the events. Yoga Day was also observed on a large scale in colleges, and nearly 10,000 yoga enthusiasts gathered at Chhatrasal Stadium today," he said. Sood led the event at the stadium. Water and PWD minister Parvesh Verma performed yoga at Thyagaraj Stadium. Health minister Pankaj Kumar Singh participated at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Park event. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, the party's national general secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh and other senior functionaries also performed yoga at the same park. Social welfare minister Ravinder Indraj Singh participated in a session at Bawana Stadium, while environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa led the celebrations at the hockey ground in Ashok Nagar.
