KUANTAN - Two people died and six others were injured after the car they were traveling in hit a lorry that had stopped on the road shoulder at Kilometre 37, Jalan Lingkaran Tengah Utama (LTU) near Kampung Chegar Perah, Lipis early this morning.
Lipis district police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said initial investigations found that the 33-year-old lorry driver and his girlfriend were on their way to Ketereh, Kelantan to deliver furniture, while the car driver, a 45-year-old man with seven passengers, was on his way to Kota Bharu, Kelantan to visit family members.
"Upon arriving at the scene, the lorry driver had stopped at the roadside to relieve himself. The accident is believed to have occurred when the car driver lost control before his vehicle crashed into the back of the lorry,' he said in a statement today.
Lipis district police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said initial investigations found that the 33-year-old lorry driver and his girlfriend were on their way to Ketereh, Kelantan to deliver furniture, while the car driver, a 45-year-old man with seven passengers, was on his way to Kota Bharu, Kelantan to visit family members.
He said that as a result of the accident at about 5.30am, Roslawati Mat Daud, 50, who is the wife of the driver and niece of driver Aqif Azfar Azman, 6, died at the scene.
"Aqif Azfar died on lap of his father who was in the front passenger seat," he said.
Ismail said the car driver and five other passengers were rushed to Kuala Lipis Hospital for further treatment, while the lorry driver and his assistant were unhurt.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. - BERNAMA

'The victim then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp. 'The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns. 'The victim downloaded the stock investment application and on Dec 30, made the first transfer of RM9,999. He earned a profit of RM18,400,' Comm Hamzah said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the victim's confidence grew in the investment and he subsequently made 35 fund transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies totalling RM1,495,176. Comm Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits from the investment app and was even asked to make an additional payment. In the second case, he said a 73-year-old retired accountant at a factory filed a police report at the George Town district police headquarters on Saturday after falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. 'According to the victim, he saw an advertisement on cryptocurrency investment that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March. 'The elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting a female suspect via WhatsApp,' he said. Comm Hamzah said the victim downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits. He added that investigations were being carried out to trace the fraud syndicate. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Charge parents to curb underage driving, say experts

PETALING JAYA: Stiffer fines and pressing negligence charges on parents could help curb instances of underage driving, say experts. Schools and local communities also have a hand in reducing the risk of teens taking to the wheel, they added. Road safety expert Law Teik Hua said relevant laws could be amended to ensure guardians are held accountable. 'This includes imposing heavier fines, community service or possibly facing charges of negligence,' said Law, who heads Universiti Putra Malaysia's Road Safety Research Centre. He said underage driving is a severe and developing problem in Malaysia. 'They don't have the physical coordination, emotional maturity or even legal training to drive safely. 'This could lead to more instances of speeding, making bad decisions and being involved in deadly accidents,' he said. Weighing in, lawyer Salim Bashir said parents must take responsibility and cannot plead ignorance when their children break the law. He said Section 39(5) of the Road Transport Act 1987 has a provision that parents can be held accountable for allowing children under 16 to operate motor vehicles. Under this section, no one under the age of 16 may drive any motor vehicle, and those under 17 are prohibited from driving any vehicle other than a motorcycle or invalid carriage. 'CLICK TO ENLARGE' Additionally, individuals under 21 are not allowed to drive heavy vehicles or public service vehicles. Anyone who drives or allows an underage person to drive, commits an offence and, upon conviction, may be fined up to RM2,000, jailed for up to six months, or both. The former Bar Council chairman also said Section 31 of the Child Act spells out that guardians can be held responsible for negligence. Under this act, any guardian who abuses, neglects, abandons or exposes a child to risk of physical or emotional harm commits an offence and, upon conviction, may face a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both. 'Section 28 of the Child Act also imputes liability for negligence in supervising and protecting the children and the liabilities could be stretched to include when the damages or injuries are caused to others due to the delinquency committed and contributed by their children,' he said. Apart from penal punishments, he said parents can also face civil actions for the wrongful act or damages caused by their underage children. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research chairman Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon said schools could identify potential underage drivers among their students. 'We cannot just say that since the incident happened outside the school compound, no action can be taken,' he said, urging schools to educate children on safety. 'Local communities play a role too. If you notice someone underage driving a vehicle, voice it out, either to them or the person's family. 'Its also one way of showing care and concern, so that person does not end up hurting themselves or even worse, your loved ones,' he added.

Singapore car caught driving against traffic on Senai–Desaru

JOHOR BAHRU: Police are investigating an incident involving a Singapore-registered vehicle travelling against traffic at Kilometre 55 of the Senai–Desaru Expressway yesterday. Kota Tinggi police chief Supt Yusof Othman said that the incident is believed to have occurred at around 11.31 am yesterday, and a 12-second video was subsequently uploaded to the 'Community Roda Johor' Facebook page. 'The white vehicle with the registration number SNT4298 was recorded driving against the traffic, endangering other road users,' he said in a statement today, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. He urged those with additional information about the incident to contact Traffic Enforcement Officer Insp Amirul Mustakim Mustaza at 017-4793329 to assist in the investigation. 'Police advise all road users always to stay vigilant and obey traffic laws for the safety of everyone,' he added.
