So, how did this happen? Well, Vishal Mega Mart, a major player in the retail sector with over 645 stores nationwide, launched a massive hiring campaign for security guards. Sounds pretty standard, right? But the internet was having none of it. People quickly started comparing the recruitment process to India's toughest exams, like UPSC and IIT-JEE. One meme even claimed 'Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket to become a security guard at Vishal Mega Mart.'

Suddenly, becoming a security guard at this retail chain was the ultimate flex, the gold medal of job-hunting, and a badge of honour. Social media flooded with memes like, 'On 1st April, Vishal Mega Mart held its exam for security guards with questions on Current Affairs, English, and Local Language, plus a physical fitness test.' Even AI-generated memes popped up, featuring famous personalities like Kohli and Ronaldo in security guard uniforms outside the store.

But is it really funny?
But let's not forget: behind the jokes and memes, there's a serious story to be told. The viral trend surrounding Vishal Mega Mart's hiring campaign highlights a deeper issue, the growing concerns around India's unemployment crisis. While memes and jokes bring attention to the job market, they also reflect a stark reality: millions of people are desperately trying to secure employment in a challenging labour market.

The country's unemployment rate has been steadily rising, with the latest figures revealing a rate of 5.1% for April 2025. And while the memes about this viral recruitment trend bring some much-needed humour, they also underscore how competitive the job market has become, even for positions that once seemed relatively simple.

The real struggle behind the unemployment
In fact, the memes aren't just about fun and games, they shine a spotlight on the very real struggles of India's job market. With the current employment rate so concerning, people are increasingly willing to compete for every available position, no matter how quirky or unconventional it may seem. This trend is more than just a meme; it's a reflection of the tough economic landscape many people in India are navigating. The viral frenzy surrounding Vishal Mega Mart's security guard job is a humorous moment, but it also serves as a reminder of how challenging it has become to find meaningful employment in a rapidly changing world.

CBFC asks Union Minister Suresh Gopi's JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala makers to change title over Goddess Sita's name

Industry sources said the release of the Suresh Gopi-starrer Malayalam movie JSK-Janaki vs. State of Kerala has hit a hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly denied it screening permission over the name of the title character. The Pravin Narayanan-directed movie, with Union Minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles, reportedly revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state. Anupama Parameswaran and Suresh Gopi in a still from JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala. According to sources, the film was reportedly denied screening clearance, citing that Janaki, an alternative name of Goddess Sita, cannot be used for such a character. Pravin, in a Facebook post, confirmed on Saturday that the Censor Board has denied screening permission for the movie. He said in the post, without elaborating, that there would be no release on 27 June. Meanwhile, noted director B Unnikrishnan, the general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), on Sunday told reporters that the makers of the JSK were clearly informed by the CBFC that the name Janaki cannot be used in the movie. "They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received. They expect to get it by Monday," he told reporters in Kochi. The CBFC clearly stated to the film's crew that the name Sita cannot be used either in the title or for the character in the movie, Unnikrishnan said. "The story is about the legal fight carried out by an assaulted woman against the state. It is said (by the Board) that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault," he said. Another filmmaker faced similar issue He said another Malayalam filmmaker recently faced a similar issue over the name of a character called Janaki in his movie, and he was forced to change it to Jayanthi to get Censor Board certification. Terming the Board's action as "strange", the FEFKA secretary asked where the country is heading. He said filmmakers are even denied the freedom to give the characters in their films the names of their choice. The director also said that in this circumstance, it would be tough to choose a name for characters belonging to the Hindu religion, as the majority of them would be epithets of Gods or Goddesses. Union Minister Suresh Gopi and the makers of the film were immediately not available for a comment.

India needs more than coders: IIT directors speak out against ‘herd mentality' around computer science craze

The Price of Parity From Code to Country Redesigning the Future of Engineering You Might Also Like: 'Will date myself again': IIT graduate CEO falls in love with himself after an evening by the lake In a hard-hitting panel discussion held on the campus of IIT Madras on Friday, the directors of five prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology united in a common refrain: it's time to abandon the obsession with computer science engineering and instead channel talent into disciplines that are equally vital for India's growth. The session was part of the PanIIT Alumni Leadership Series (PALS), a voluntary initiative championing transformative conversations around engineering education in India As reported by The New Indian Express, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti set the tone for the discussion with a bold appeal: 'The country needs bright minds in other disciplines too.' He went on to emphasize that national toppers should be encouraged to pursue areas beyond computer science, noting that engineering knowledge should also find its way into civil services and policymaking for a more tech-savvy of the key reasons students are drawn almost blindly toward computer science, panelists said, is the lure of lucrative entry-level salaries. Shreepad Karmalkar, director of IIT Bhubaneswar, pointed out, 'This herd mentality needs to be gotten rid of.' He observed that while compensation packages for software roles might be tempting, this singular focus comes at the cost of neglecting critical sectors of national concerns were echoed by KN Satyanarayana, director of IIT Tirupati, who pointed to the growing void in core engineering disciplines . 'There is a big vacuum in the battery, semiconductor sectors which are the sunrise sectors,' he said, arguing that the need of the hour lies in nurturing chemical engineers and material scientists—professionals who can steer the nation's self-reliance in cutting-edge economic aspirations dominate student choices, BS Murty, director of IIT Hyderabad, delivered a stirring appeal to reorient that ambition. 'Put the country first over your personal aspirations,' he urged, calling on India's youth to think beyond just job security and high-paying R Desai, director of IIT Dharwad, chimed in with a message that connected engineering with social impact. He encouraged students to channel their creativity toward making India a better place to live in—reminding them that real engineering innovation solves problems for people, not just critiques of current trends, the panel also shared their forward-thinking vision for engineering education. Interdisciplinary learning , the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, a focus on sustainability, and stronger academia-industry partnerships were seen as key levers to make engineering education more relevant in the 21st was another focal point. The directors called for educational access to be broadened for students from varied socio-economic backgrounds, ensuring that engineering is not just elite but Chandrasekaran, chairperson of PALS, also weighed in on the discussion, supporting the vision that a paradigm shift in engineering education is not just necessary—but India stands at the crossroads of its technological and developmental journey, these IIT heads are urging the next generation of engineers to look beyond the keyboard. Because while coding may be king today, building the nation takes a much wider toolbox.
