Ahmedabad plane crash: How ‘beloved' airline's flight cut short ex-Air India loader's life; GISF jawan posted at hostel died of 33% burns
By Aishwarya Patel AHMEDABAD: After Rajendra Patankar's long and dedicated service to Air India (AI), it was Flight 171 from his beloved airline that wrote his final chapter. The 63-year-old former Air India cargo loader was merely 20 minutes away from completing his morning shift as a Gujarat Industrial Security Force (GISF) jawan at Atulyam-4, when destiny dealt its cruel hand. Caught in the searing impact of the AI plane crash, he ran out of the building, partially burned. The miracle that got Rajendra out alive ended Wednesday evening when he succumbed to his injuries at Civil Hospital. Rushed to the hospital with 33% burns across his face, forearms, and hands, Patankar remained conscious through most of the six days, even walking and speaking with his family. His son Vishal, 37, who works with AI's security unit, was mobilised to help with rescue operations, and only learnt of his father's condition later. "My father said he recognised the sound of aircraft engines just before the blast. Look at the irony of fate. He loved Air India. It gave him a life. None of us had imagined it would also take it away," said Vishal. Vishal, his younger brother Ankit, 35, and their mother Meena, 61, found Rajendra alert at the hospital. "He talked, joked, recognised his colleagues, and even some of the doctors whom he knew from his three years at BJ Medical College and Atulyam." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3.5, 4.5 BHK Homes starting at ₹4.89 Cr.* Hero Homes Learn More Undo By the fourth day, Rajendra grew anxious. "With so many doctors visiting him, he began thinking something was wrong," Vishal said. The anxiety spiked during a dressing replacement for his deep tissue burns, which amplified the pain. The next day, he lost consciousness and was placed on ventilator as his heart struggled to maintain the required oxygen level in his blood. His body gave up the fight the following evening. Doctors attempted CPR six times, but failed to resuscitate him. On Thursday, GISF personnel gathered in large numbers. Rajendra was given a salute of honour at the BJMC campus, said senior GISF inspector Girish M Thakur. His body was escorted in a police-protected convoy that passed through Meghaninagar, before reaching the crematorium in the Ashok Mill area. A man who worked most of his life around aeroplanes, was laid to rest in the shadow of one.

How about developing such bonds while being trained in your areas of interest? That is exactly what Aaaqil, Vishal, and Vaiga, three teenagers from Thiruvananthapuram, are experiencing, as they represent India at Artek — a globally renowned children's centre — on Russia's Black Sea coast. Artek conducts annual camps for students from around the world. Children are trained in various domains according to their age and areas of interest on a campus spreads over 252 hectares. An avid sports and arts enthusiast, the 11th grader of Sai Krishna Public School, Chenkal believes that this is the best time to be at Artek, as participants got to celebrate Russia Day and Russian Children's Day.

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: State govt bans use of private vehicles for tourist rentals
The Meghalaya government has banned renting out private vehicles – both two-wheelers and four-wheelers – for commercial use to ensure tourist safety. The directive comes in the wake of the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. The Office of the Commissioner of Transport issued an order in this regard on 13 June 2025. It said that Meghalaya has not implemented the Rent-a-Motorcycle or Rent-a-Cab schemes. Therefore, no individual or agency is legally authorised to offer private vehicles for hire in the state. NDTV reported that David D. Sangma, the Commissioner of Transport, said that the violators will face severe consequences, including fines, vehicle seizure, and potential imprisonment. Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, K Prasad said: 'We have received the order from the Commissioner of Transport and have activated all our ground staff and traffic personnel. Anyone found violating the provisions during checking will face strict action as per the Motor Vehicles Act,' reported NDTV. 'We are inspecting vehicles coming both from outside and within the city. We've deployed our traffic personnel at prime spots such as Mawlai, MES Junction, and tourist viewpoints. If anyone is found hiring or giving private vehicles without valid permits, action will be taken under Sections 182E and 207 of the MVI Act,' Prasad said. He further stated: 'Rapido services not registered under the Transport Department will be covered under this action too.' Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman, was allegedly killed by his wife, Sonam and three men while the couple was on a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. Meghalaya Police's Special Investigation Team on Tuesday reconstructed the crime scene in Sohra in the presence of the accused Sonam Raghuvanshi and three others as part of their investigations into the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi. Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, said that the reconstruction of the crime scene was very successful as the police 'got a very clear picture now'. Detailing the reconstruction of the crime scene, Syiem said that one more machete used to murder Raja Raghuvanshi still needs to be recovered. 'The SIT today visited several places to re-play how the accused did it. We started from the parking lot where they had kept their went to the viewpoint, and ascertained who was standing where just before the murder. There were three blows - first by Vishal, second by Anand and the last blow by Akash. We have ascertained that one more machete still needs to be recovered. The accused replayed how they threw the machete. SDRF are trying to recover the second weapon,' he said. Speaking to the media, Syiem also said: 'We have ascertained what happened to Raja's mobile phone. It was damaged by Sonam and then by Vishal. This whole thing was played out, and also their exit from here.' 'We have ascertained that the victim was hit with the first hit was by Vishal aka Raja was hit and blood came out, Sonam moved away from the spot. The three accused threw the body down,' he added.

Delhi: Man held in 2010 beheading case after jumping bail for four years
The Delhi Police crime branch on Monday arrested a 42-year-old man from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with the 2010 murder of a man whose decapitated body was found near GT Karnal Road in outer Delhi. Police said the accused, Manoj Sukda, had been absconding for four years after securing interim bail in August 2021. He was declared a proclaimed offender by the court in September 2024. According to police, Sukda and three associates allegedly killed a man named Vishal in December 2010 to avenge the arrest of one of their accomplices, Pappu, in a 2003 robbery case. Vishal had reportedly provided information that led to Pappu's conviction and a seven-year prison sentence. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Harsh Indora said the beheaded body was recovered on December 13, 2010, near a CNG station on the service lane of GT Karnal Road in the Samaipur area. 'The victim was beheaded with a sharp weapon, seemingly to conceal his identity. It was a blind murder case -- in which police have no leads on the killer or the victim -- at the time,' Indora said, adding that a case of murder, destruction of evidence, and criminal conspiracy was registered at Samaipur Badli police station. The victim was later identified as Vishal. Two of the accused — Sukda and Sanjay — were arrested in 2018, nearly eight years after the FIR was registered. Sukda was released on interim bail in August 2021 and went underground. He had been evading trial for the past four years in the case. As a result, the court concerned had declared him a proclaimed offender (PO) in September 2024, said the DCP. Last week, the crime branch received information about his presence in Shamli. A raid was conducted and Sukda was arrested on Saturday. He was brought back to Delhi and interrogated. 'Sukda disclosed that his co-accused, Pappu, was arrested in a robbery case in 2003 based on information shared by Vishal. Pappu was convicted in that case and he served seven years in jail. After completing his sentence, Pappu came out and planned his revenge. He conspired with Sukda, Sanjay and Uday to kill Vishal. The four of them beheaded him and dumped the body near the CNG station,' said a crime branch officer, who asked not to be named. Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused.
