Senai paint factory fire injures 3, destroys vehicles and nearby units
KULAI: Three men, including a Bangladeshi national, sustained burn injuries in a fire at a paint mixing factory in Taman Perindustrian Desa Idaman, Senai, yesterday afternoon.
Fire Operations Commander, senior officer Muhammad Fauzi Awang, said they received an emergency call about the incident at around 2.13pm, and 46 personnel along with fire engines were dispatched to the scene.
He said the Operations Response Team (PKO) that arrived at the scene found that the fire involved a factory measuring 30 by 60 square feet.
'The blaze destroyed 95% of the factory and spread to two adjacent factories, damaging 25% of those buildings. A jeep, three cars, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), a lorry, and a forklift were also 80% burned,' he stated.
'There were three victims who suffered burns in the fire and were taken to the hospital by Health Ministry ambulances. However, information about the victims is not yet available,' he said in a statement yesterday.
The firefighting operation ended completely at 7.22pm.

Ambulance overturns on slippery road in Melaka, causing 1km jam
MELAKA: A Health Ministry ambulance skidded and overturned near Kampung Paya Luboh, Tangga Batu, this morning, believed to be due to slippery road conditions. A 30-year-old medical assistant was injured in the 10.40am incident. The 40-year-old ambulance driver was unhurt. Melaka Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Deputy Superintendent II Mohd Hafidzatullah Rashid said the department received a distress call at 10.48am and despatched eight firefighters from the Tangga Batu station. "Upon arrival about 10 minutes later, the team found a Toyota Hiace ambulance and one injured man. "Operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Mohamed Azuani Mat Yusof confirmed that the victim was extracted and taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment." It is understood that the ambulance was on its way to pick up a patient when it overturned at a bend. The road was believed to be wet and slippery following rainfall.

Tenaganita commends RM1.55 million payout order to Bangladeshi workers
KUALA LUMPUR: Human rights organisation Tenaganita has commended a recent decision by the Kuala Lumpur Labour Department, which ordered Meranti Binamas Sdn Bhd to pay nearly RM1.55 million in unpaid wages and related violations to 74 Bangladeshi migrant workers. The payment, totaling RM1,548,000, follows claims filed by the workers through Tenaganita for unpaid wages and related labour violations. Tenaganita executive director Glorene A Das said the latest development represents a significant step forward in the fight for justice and dignity for migrant workers in Malaysia. "The decision affirms that employers must be held accountable for their obligations and that the rights of workers, particularly migrant workers who are often silenced and made invisibilise, must be asserted without compromise," she said in a statement. The case saw the workers, including lead claimant Md Kabir Hossain, pay exorbitant recruitment fees of up to RM25,000 to secure jobs promised under official permits. However, upon arrival in Malaysia, they were left without employment, wages, or adequate living conditions, exposed to legal risks and mental distress. The workers lived for months in overcrowded and unsanitary hostels in Pudu, without income or support, some even contemplating suicide due to the desperation they endured. The case was led by Tenaganita's consultant and lead case officer Abdul Aziz bin Ismail. Aziz, in response to the decision said; "It has been a long and winding road, but we finally have a decision and an order from the Labour Department. This is a significant achievement for the workers and for Tenaganita. It sets yet another precedent that even large, seemingly untouchable companies can be held accountable when workers stand united and demand justice." By ordering Meranti Binamas Sdn Bhd to pay the amounts due, the department has sent a clear message that employers cannot exploit workers with impunity." Such a case was not isolated. "Tenaganita has documented hundreds of similar cases involving fraud, deception, and labour rights violations under the pretense of legal recruitment. We raised these issues in our International Migrants Day 2024 statement, highlighting the systemic failures that have plagued Malaysia's labour migration governance. "Tenaganita continues to urge the government to ensure that the payment is made promptly and in full, and that systemic reform is undertaken to prevent similar abuses in the future. We also call on the authorities to take proactive steps to identify other affected workers and ensure they too have access to redress.

12 premises raided in Jalan Silang during Op Gempur crackdown
KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve retail outlets and restaurants around Jalan Silang were raided last night in Op Gempur, conducted by the Kuala Lumpur branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN). The joint operation, held under the KL Strike Force initiative, began at 9pm and involved the Immigration Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Kuala Lumpur KPDN director Mohd Sabri Seman said inspections were carried out following intelligence and public complaints regarding various offences, including the absence of price tags and the sale of controlled goods without valid licences. "A total of 10 cases were recorded — three related to pricing offences and five involving the use of unverified weighing and measuring equipment. Compound fines amounting to RM6,000 were issued to the traders. "Two additional cases are being investigated under the Trademarks Act 2019 for the sale of counterfeit goods, after 125 fake luxury watches, valued at about RM6,500, were seized," he said at a press conference following the operation. Mohd Sabri said preliminary investigations indicated that the premises selling counterfeit watches had likely been operating for over a year. The outlets were reportedly rented by foreigners, with the majority of their customers also being foreigners. During the same operation, the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department detained 24 foreign men who failed to produce valid identification documents. They are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63. "The detainees include 10 Bangladeshi nationals, eight Nepalese, two each from Pakistan and Myanmar, and one each from Indonesia and Sri Lanka," he said. Meanwhile, DBKL issued 17 compound notices and one premises closure notice for offences under the Local Government Act 1976. Mohd Sabri added that monitoring and enforcement operations would continue to ensure the welfare and safety of Kuala Lumpur residents.
