Mark Peploe, Oscar-winning scriptwriter of The Last Emperor, dies aged 82

The Guardiana day ago

Mark Peploe, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who collaborated with some of the greatest names in European film-making including Michelangelo Antonioni and Bernardo Bertolucci, has died aged 82. Peploe's family told the Guardian he died in Florence, Italy, after a long illness.
Peploe's prominence centred on the screenplays he wrote for some of the great European directors of the era, notably Italian new wave auteurs Antonioni and Bertolucci. Despite its chequered release history, the 1975 film The Passenger, directed by Antonioni and starring Jack Nicholson, has since been acclaimed as one the decade's cinematic masterpieces, and Peploe went on to forge a regular partnership with Bertolucci, winning an Oscar in 1988 for best adapted screenplay for The Last Emperor.
Jeremy Thomas, producer of The Last Emperor, told the Guardian: 'Mark was a Renaissance man, a brilliant writer of screenplays, and also an artist – he had a particular gift of a cultivation of the past which informed him as a writer. He was a very impressive person.'
Peploe was born in 1943 in Nairobi into an artistic family. His grandfather on his father's side was celebrated Scottish colourist SJ Peploe, while on his mother's he was the great-grandson of German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand. (His mother, Clotilde, was also a painter of note and his father, Willy, was an art dealer.) After a brief period living in a villa the family owned in Florence, Peploe studied at Oxford university, and was subsequently hired by London-based Canadian producer Allan King, working on documentaries about a wide range of creative figures including writer Norman Mailer, op-art pioneer Victor Vasarely and Never on Sunday star Melina Mercouri.
Peploe said he turned to writing after becoming 'frustrated' with documentary-making: 'I thought that if you wrote the script, you would be able to control the movie more than I did. It was an illusion, but I thought so at the time!' Peploe worked on the script for Jacques Demy's 1972 musical The Pied Piper (starring Donovan and Diana Dors), and then had his story The Passenger – originally titled Fatal Exit – picked up by Antonioni as the third in the Italian director's trilogy of English-language films, following Blow-Up and Zabriskie Point.
After co-writing the script with film theorist Peter Wollen, Peploe had intended to direct the film himself, but producer Carlo Ponti offered it to Antonioni after the latter's earlier project, entitled Technically Sweet, was shut down over budgetary concerns. Starring Nicholson as a TV reporter who swaps identities with a dead man, The Passenger also features Maria Schneider and Jenny Runacre and became renowned for a seven-minute tracking shot during its final scene. Due to a dispute with producers MGM, Nicholson acquired the rights to the film, and it re-emerged in the mid-2000s to considerable acclaim.
Peploe's sister Clare was also a film-maker, and the pair collaborated on the script for High Season, her directorial debut in 1987. The same year also saw the release of The Last Emperor, on which Peploe had worked with Bertolucci (who had married Clare in 1979). Produced by Thomas, the film won nine Oscars in 1988 for its lavish treatment of the story of Chinese emperor Puyi, who was deposed in 1912 but allowed to live in Beijing's Forbidden City until 1924. Peploe subsequently worked on two more of Bertolucci's films: the Paul Bowles adaptation The Sheltering Sky, released in 1990, and Little Buddha, starring Keanu Reeves as Prince Siddhartha, in 1994.
Peploe achieved his ambition of moving into directing with the 1991 psychological horror Afraid of the Dark, starring James Fox and Fanny Ardant, which has become something of a cult film, and an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's story Victory, released in 1996 and starring Willem Dafoe and Irène Jacob.
Peploe is survived by his partner, art historian Alina Payne; he was previously married to costume designer Louise Stjernsward, with whom he had a daughter Lola, and was subsequently in a longterm relationship with Gina Marcou.

Troubled The Flash star Ezra Miller sparks concern with bizarre interview

Ezra Miller sat down for a rare - and rather bizarre - interview just a month after their surprise Cannes appearance. The 32-year-old troubled star - who uses they/them pronouns - talked about their future in acting as they revealed it was 'on tentative grounds' while sitting down with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale on Thursday. Miller had posed on the red carpet for the first time in two years at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy. The reclusive actor - who starred in the 2023 The Flash film - had a slew of legal issues from 2022 including assault charges and grooming allegations so they shocked many when they appeared at the most famous film festival at the premiere of Die, My Love in support of their friend Lynne Ramsey. While smoking a cigarette, they explained: 'I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers.' Miller went on to claim that they are writing a film with Ramsey, 55, which they claimed 'will likely be the first thing I do' in their return to Hollywood. They went on to peculiarly say: 'I've been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude which has been friendly to me.' Miller went on to say that they would do anything for their filmmaker friend Ramsey despite Cannes being a 'tough re-entry point' to being in the limelight again before going on yet another bizarre tangent. They said: 'If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak be there, you know what I mean?' This came just a month after they made am aforementioned surprise appearance at the Cannes Film Festival after years of laying low following their controversies. The troubled star showed up on the red carpet wearing a maroon tuxedo paired with a beret over their long hair but walked quickly, not stopping to be photographed. Miller was there to support director Ramsay for the premiere of her film Die, My Love starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The Flash actor previously worked with the director on the 2011 film We Need to Talk About Kevin. Miller has been keeping a low profile since The Flash — which ended up performing poorly in the box office — premiered in 2023. The previous year, they fled the spotlight after apologizing for their 'past behavior' and said they were seeking help for their 'complex mental health issues.' Before then, they made countless headlines as a result of multiple arrests and a series of distressing allegations, including allegedly grooming a teenage girl. Videos surfaced online in which the actor appeared to be assaulting innocent civilians, and there were disturbing reports that the star was allegedly housing young children in a home with 'guns and bullets strewn' around the property. They were arrested in Hawaii after allegedly attacking a couple at a karaoke bar in 2022. A month later, they were arrested again for allegedly injuring a woman by throwing a chair at her head. They were also accused of harassing a woman in Germany, allegedly hosting three young children and their mom in Vermont in an 'unsafe environment.' And they were also charged with felony burglary in the same state. However, in June 2023, a protective order issued against them in the state of Massachusetts was lifted, signaling an end to their legal troubles. The actor was previously accused of behaving inappropriately around a 12-year-old child and the minor's family. They allegedly met in 2016 when Tokata was 12 and Miller was 23. Tokata's parents since-lifted petition previously accused Miller of 'corrupting a minor' as well as 'cult-like and psychologically manipulative, controlling behavior.' Her father explained last year that he and his wife 'withdrew' the 'grooming' complaint filed in June 2022 and explained they were 'doing our level best to move on.' At the time, Miller said they were 'very grateful.' 'I'm encouraged by today's outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me and sought to ensure that this egregious misuse of the protective order system was halted.' They then slammed the press in their social media statement. 'I implore those members of the media who have recklessly spread false claims and failed to accurately report the truth and context of this story, to hold themselves to a higher standard and take the time to find the facts, rather than chasing the clicks.'

It's been ten months now since everyone's favourite GT3 racing sim Assetto Corsa Competizione last received a significant update, and with developer Kunos Simulazioni hard at work on a new title, Assetto Corsa Evo, ACC's future has become murkier than Red Bull's second seat. But there's a glimmer of hope for the community, which still hits over 4,300 players per day, six years after release. Just a glimmer, mind you. In reply, Kunos wrote: 'We're not done with ACC yet, keep giving us the feedback.' EXCLUSIVE Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's lavish gift to VIP wedding guests revealed

After a two-year engagement, Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sanchez are set to marry next week in Venice, Italy, among a star-studded guest list - and an insider has now revealed that extremely lavish gift that the VIP guests will receive just for attending. An insider told the Daily Mail that Bezos' $500 million superyacht, Koru, will be moored off the coast of San Georgio Maggiore island, which is home to the famous Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th century Benedictine church. They shared that the island is 'off-limits to visitors' from June 24 to June 29, with the mayor of Venice believing that the wedding will take place on the yacht. The Amazon boss has allegedly booked the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, one of the largest and grandest buildings in the historical center of Venice, as part of the multi-day-long extravaganza of celebrations. It's unclear if the space is related to their wedding, but it's booked from June 26 to June 28. The insider added that a private tender service is said to be taking guests from the island to the yacht. The guest list is thought to be intimate, with less than 200 people, and suspected guests including A-listers like Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and even members of the Trump family. And now, it's been revealed to the Daily Mail by a source in Italy that each guest will be receiving hand-blown glassware by local glassmaker Laguna B. The glassware company was originally created by Marie Brandolini, who left New York in 1988 to live in Venice. Her idea came about after her stepfather gave her a goti de fornasa - a traditional drinking glass crafted by Murano glassmakers - which inspired her to make her own, putting her own spin on it to create something 'new and personal.' Her son later took over the business after she passed in 2013, per Vogue. The handmade glassware features bright colors, stripes, and floral details. All of the glasses have different motifs and designs, with one large-size cup running customers $167. The handmade glassware are not the only things that guests will be coming back home with. The insider told Daily Mail that a wedding planner who is not working this event has heard that guests will receive other 'opulent' gifts for attending. It's unclear what those other gifts will be, but Sanchez is known to be a fan of fun designer purses, like the $5,750 Balenciaga 9AM Coffee Cup Clutch Bag, which she was seen carrying in March. The luxe item is designed as a tote bag shaped like a coffee cup. The Kardashian family also gifted her a designer bag worth nearly $7,000 following her Blue Origin space trip. The gift was a crystal adorned Judith Leiber UFO-inspired bag after she landed back on solid ground. But of course, guests will also be treated to a few other luxurious surprises during their time in Italy for the wedding. The source confirmed to the Daily Mail that local bakery Rosa Salva Venetia will be providing pastries for the extravagant weekend. The delicious menu items at the bakery include tiramisu, flaky, cream-filled pastries, and fritelli, a traditional Italian fried treat. However, Rosa Salva Venetia will not be providing the wedding cake for the loved-up couple. It looks like all of this opulence is thanks to Sanchez herself, as her hubby-to-be revealed in a 2023 Vogue interview that he wouldn't dare get involved with wedding planning. 'Oh, God, no. Do I look that dumb?' Bezos told the outlet when he was asked if he had a big part in the preparations. During the interview, the future Mrs. Bezos listed Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, and Valentino as some of her favorite designers, but didn't share anything about which one will make her gown - or gowns, for that matter. Separate sources recently told the Daily Mail that the festivities are expected to cost anywhere from $15 to $20 million. Many things went into the estimate of the total cost, including transportation fees, her wedding dress and catering.
