In Our View: CNN turns 45

Yahoo12-06-2025

In June 1980, 24-hour news began its journey. CNN was the first to do so. It was the effort Of Cincinnati-born media mogul Ted Turner.
Before television stations were mostly deregulated, they were required to broadcast a certain few minutes of news and community happenings each day.
Prior to CNN, Turner owned what became the super station. During those times, they played old movies, some Atlanta Braves baseball games, and old comedy shows that were free. It was a popular place to go for 'The Andy Griffith Show.'
The initial idea of CNN came about because during the daily broadcast one of Turner's employees, Bill Tush, would bring his German Shepherd on set dressed in a necktie while Tush read the news.
Tush had an idea of putting peanut butter on the roof of the dog's mouth. The camera focused on the dog named Rex while Tush read the news. The dog spent the five minutes, licking the roof of his mouth by sticking his tongue out. It ended up being the highest-rated segment of the then-fledging network.
CNN was the go-to network in the 1980s for breaking news. Based in Atlanta, it was in an old country club clubhouse. It moved to downtown Atlanta in 1987 in a 17-story complex next to the Omni event center.
Cable television news changed forever. The way we consume news changed. To get national news, you had to wait until the 6:30 network broadcast on the three national networks.
Fast-forward to today, CNN is a shell of its heyday during their first 20 years. Turner sold all his assets, including CNN, to Time Magazine and AOL. Television news is now a competitive item. Consumers now have five-plus networks to get news. Some networks are tailored to fit that consumer's interest. That is not a good way to consume news. Watch all the different networks.
Read a newspaper for more comprehensive coverage.
Television news is not a big money maker. That's why some networks lean (far) right and some lean (far) left. News is available on Internet sources as well, but they are not always reliable.
Choose your news from a reliable source. We'll let you readers decide which network or Internet site is best.

Council's £100k appeal to buy lost Turner painting

A council has launched a one-week fundraiser to return JMW Turner's earliest-known oil painting "to its home". Bristol City Council, which owns Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, is trying to raise £100,000 to help purchase The Rising Squall, which depicts the Avon George. The painting had been lost for 150 years before it was rediscovered last year. Phillip Walker, head of culture for Bristol City Council, said: "It's an incredibly important and relevant painting for Bristol because it's the very first and probably only oil painting that Turner ever painted of a Bristol scene." More news stories for Bristol Watch the latest Points West Listen to the latest news for Bristol "This is the very first oil painting he ever painted... what's more incredible is that he was only 17 at the time," Mr Walker added. The guide price for the painting is £300,000, and the council hopes to raise the rest of the money from other sources before the auction on 2 July. Mr Walker said the council is "putting all of its feelers out" to "try and raise the money it can to stand a chance at bidding". The painting was debuted at the Royal Academy in 1793, three days after Turner's 18th birthday, before being bought by Reverend Robert Nixon, a customer of Turner's father's barber shop. Mr Nixon's son inherited the painting after his death, and it then fell "into obscurity", having last been exhibited in Tasmania, Australia. If the council is unsuccessful in purchasing Turner's work, it said all of the money that has been donated will be returned. "We want to make this work, so we're asking anyone who can to help and share the enthusiasm and the opportunity," Mr Walker said. "This really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Bristol to show how important art and culture are to it." Follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X and Instagram. Reed Richards Popcorn Bucket For THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Has Fans Doing a Double Take — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios is stretching into meme territory with its latest movie tie-in collectible. A new popcorn bucket for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has hit the internet, and it features none other than Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic wrapped around the bucket. The container is gripped by Reed's outstretched, stretchy arm. It's a fun nod to his iconic powers and a rare bit of character-focused merch ahead of the movie's release. But of course, it didn't take long for the internet to... notice things. At just the right (or wrong?) angle, the elongated arm clinging to the bucket has prompted some spicy fan interpretations because, well, that's the internet. This is part of a growing line of First Steps tie-in buckets following the giant Galactus one. Thankfully, this Reed Richards version will only run you $39.99, not pocket change, but also not Galactus-sized debt. While the popcorn bucket is stirring conversation online, Pedro Pascal recently spoke to Empire about what drew him to the role of Marvel's most elastic intellectual. 'I see a limitless amount of layers to this character. He does the ultimate version of catastrophising. A brain that has an overview of threats on a mathematical level, but also being emotionally available. It was a fascinating contradiction.' The marketing machine is clearly warming up. Early tracking puts First Steps on pace for a $125 million to $155 million opening, which would be a much-needed win for the MCU. Whether audiences will stretch their arms (and wallets) for the film remains to be seen. In the meantime, check out the Reed Richards bucket and some hilariously suggestive fan-art by Boss Logic. Just... don't stare too long at that arm.
