Volkswagen is weighing up the viability of an electric compact MPV to replace the Touran and offer a practical alternative to SUVs for family car buyers.
The new model is said to be under internal review, with Volkswagen drawing inspiration from earlier concepts, including the 2016 Budd-e, which was based on an early version of the MEB platform that today underpins the brand's electric cars.
Sources familiar with the project have told Autocar that Volkswagen recently retrieved various MPV concepts from storage to support internal discussions and presentations exploring how their design and packaging could be adapted for a new production model.
The move reflects a broader shift in thinking inside Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany, where there is renewed recognition that a dedicated family-focused MPV may still have commercial relevance, especially in the European and Chinese markets, amid a flood of SUV models.
Although no production decision has been made, the new MPV would be positioned beneath the ID Buzz, offering a smaller footprint, a lighter weight and a more affordable price.
These qualities have led to it being described as a modern-day Microbus (Type 2).
The design direction of the new model remains under wraps, although it could be expected to take cues from concepts such as the 2011 Bulli and 2016 Budd-e, as well as production models such as the outgoing Mk2 Touran and 2014 Golf SV.
Key considerations include an upright silhouette, short overhangs, a flat floor and a high roofline – all aimed at providing maximum interior space and the sort of overall versatility expected by potential customers, including German taxi fleets.
The 2016 Budd-e concept measured 4597mm in length, some 70mm longer than the second-generation Touran and 124mm shorter than the standard-wheelbase ID Buzz.
Insiders say new sliding door and seating concepts are being developed in a bid to provide the sort of modernity of potential rivals, including the recently introduced Zeekr Mix.
While the existing ID Buzz targets 'premium lifestyle' buyers, the Microbus is reportedly aimed at families seeking a 'no-nonsense, high-utility electric vehicle with sliding rear doors and strong day-to-day usability'.
Pressure to act has come not only from persistent Touran loyalists but also from a new generation of electric MPVs emerging out of China - particularly models like the Mix, which has attracted attention for its unique twin sliding doors and highly flexible interior.
Launched in 2003, the Touran became a mainstay of Volkswagen's European line-up over two generations. Although overshadowed by SUVs in recent years, it remains one of the most successful European models of its type, with more than 2.6 million units sold globally.
While it's still early days, the new MPV is expected to ride on a further developed version of Volkswagen's MEB+ platform or the newer SSP platform.
It's likely to a choice of batteries in the 60–80kWh range and either single-motor front-wheel drive or optional dual-motor four-wheel drive.
Should the new MPV get the green light, it could be launched by 2027 or 2028, potentially reviving the Touran badge in line with Volkswagen's plan to provide future EVs with traditional names instead of the ID numbers used today.

EU and Canada to deepen ties with new security pact
BRUSSELS, June 23 (Reuters) - The European Union hosts Canada for a summit on Monday designed to deepen their already close ties as both face increased geopolitical threats, including a more hostile U.S. president, Russia and Middle East instability. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, who chairs EU summits, will greet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for a two-hour meeting in Brussels, a day before a NATO summit in the Hague. EU officials said the EU-Canada summit was not a "business as usual" meeting and marked a new era in bilateral ties. The two allies, who already have a free trade agreement, are due to agree to a security and defence partnership, the first the bloc has struck with a country from the Americas. The partnership will involve joint work on crisis management, cyber, maritime and space security, arms control, as well as support for Ukraine, which Russia invaded more than three years ago. It will also pave the way for Canadian companies to access the 150 billion euro ($172 billion) EU joint procurement programme SAFE. The two partners are also expected to launch negotiations on a digital agreement designed to shape global rules for data, such as on e-signatures and consumer protection or limits on spam. A draft of the joint statement refers to alignment of standards in digital regulation to make online platforms safer and more inclusive and AI systems more trustworthy, areas of regulation on which the United States has criticised the EU. German industrial lobby group cuts 2025 economic forecast as US tariffs weigh
June 23 (Reuters) - The German economy is set to contract more than previously expected in 2025 as U.S. tariffs weigh on exports, the BDI industry association said on Monday, forecasting a 0.3% contraction in 2025. In January BDI had forecast a 0.1% contraction, but flagged that changes to U.S. tariff policy might impact the export-driven economy further. A contraction in 2025 would mark Germany's third consecutive annual decline. The U.S. was Germany's biggest trading partner in 2024 with two-way goods trade totalling 253 billion euros ($288.02 billion). "Nevertheless, there is a real chance of an upturn next year if the German government resolutely pursues the path it has taken," BDI President Peter Leibinger said in a statement. Leibinger welcomed initial steps taken by the current government, such as tax and energy price relief, but said further reforms were necessary. BDI also offered the government support in strengthening Germany's defence capabilities, with Leibinger saying that "German industry is ready to make its contribution."

Huawei's new laptop uses older China-made chip, US curbs stall SMIC, report shows
BEIJING, June 23 (Reuters) - Huawei Technologies' new MateBook Fold laptop is powered by an older-generation chip made by SMIC ( opens new tab, highlighting how U.S. export curbs are hindering China's top foundry from advancing to next-generation semiconductor manufacturing, Canadian research firm TechInsights said on Monday. There was widespread speculation in the industry that Huawei ( would use SMIC's newer 5nm-equivalent N+3 process node chip in the MateBook Fold that, according to TechInsights, marks Huawei's "most aggressive entrance into full-stack computing; chip design, OS development, and hardware integration". However, the laptop instead features the Kirin X90 chip, built on the same 7nm N+2 process node that was first introduced in August 2023, TechInsights said in a report. "This likely means that SMIC has not yet achieved a 5nm equivalent node that can be produced at scale," it said. "U.S.-imposed technology controls are likely continuing to impact SMIC's ability to catch-up to current foundry leaders in more advanced nodes across chips for mobile, PCs, and cloud/AI applications," TechInsights added. The MateBook Fold, which does not have a physical keyboard and features an 18-inch OLED double screen, was one of two new laptops Huawei launched last month. The devices are part of Huawei's broader push to build a self-reliant ecosystem amid U.S. efforts to limit its access to advanced chips. The laptops are the first to be sold with Huawei's Harmony operating system. It has not officially disclosed the processor used, though past models have used Intel (INTC.O), opens new tab chips. Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters reported last year that the U.S. revoked licences that had allowed companies including Intel and Qualcomm (QCOM.O), opens new tab to ship chips used for laptops and handsets to Huawei. The U.S. curbs limited SMIC's access to advanced chipmaking tools, including extreme ultraviolet lithography. China-based foundries have to now rely on less efficient multi-patterning techniques that reduce yield, the report said. It added that China remains at least three generations behind the global semiconductor frontier, as foundries like TSMC and Intel prepare to roll out 2nm process technology within the next 12 to 24 months. Earlier this month, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei told Chinese state media that Huawei's chips were just one generation behind that of U.S. peers but the firm was finding ways to improve performance through methods such as cluster computing.
