Inside the 'Mini Maldives' of Europe with stunning beaches and crystal clear waters

Daily Mirror05-05-2025

The Maldives and Bora Bora have long been the dream destinations for many holidaymakers – however, it's clear this European destination looks equally as breathtaking
You don't need to book a long-haul flight to experience a Maldives -like holiday. That's because there are plenty of dreamy destinations closer to home – with one European spot even been branded 'Mini Maldives'.
Everyone's been talking about the sun-drenched shores of Fuerteventura on social media platforms like TikTok. And recent drone footage of the Canary Island garnered hundreds of views. Under the video, one holidaymaker gushed: "I was there last year twice… one of the most beautiful places on Earth." Meanwhile, another said: "It's a lovely place having been so many times heading back in a few days."

So why is everyone raving about Fuerteventura? It is the second largest of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa.

The island boasts more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) of coastline with some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. These include long stretches of white sand, turquoise waters, and secluded coves.
Popular beaches include Corralejo Natural Park, with its expansive sand dunes; Cofete Beach, known for its wild and untamed beauty; and Sotavento Beach, famous for its shallow lagoons and windsurfing.
The beaches are also known for their volcanic rock formations, which contrast beautifully with the clear waters.
It's gorgeously sunny too – and tourists enjoy a year-round subtropical climate, making it an ideal destination for outdoor activities in any season.
Temperatures are mild, with average highs ranging from 20°C (68°F) in winter to 28°C (82°F) in summer. Cooler ocean breezes moderate the heat, and rainfall is minimal.

In 2009, Fuerteventura was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its unique ecosystems, diverse marine life, and sustainable development efforts.
Visitors can go dolphin watching off the coast or hike their way through volcanic landscapes and coastal paths. It's a brilliant destination for both adventurers and those looking to kick-back and relax.
And the best part? You don't have to experience the cost and time of flying all the way to the Maldives!

Hundreds wave off Wales as they head to the Euros

Hundreds of people gathered at Cardiff Airport today (Sunday, June 21) to wave off Wales as they flew to Portugal for their training camp ahead of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 tournament. The Euros, which will be held in Switzerland next month, will be the squad's first major tournament. Wales kick-off their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5. Their remaining two games are in St Gallen with France on July 9 and against reigning European champions England on July 13. Football fans of all ages cheered Rhian Wilkinson's squad on at the airport just days after the selected 23 players were announced on the top of Yr Wyddfa, Wales' highest mountain. Speaking amongst the crowds ahead of the journey to Switzerland, Jess Fishlock - former Wales Captain and all time highest goal scorer - said: "It's huge, it's so nice that they [the fans] came out and hopefully we are an inspiration for them and their future and it shows how much support we have from the nation. "I'm super excited, I think today it has finally hit home what we are doing and I just can't wait to get there. "This is the best moment of my career, no doubt about that, and I am just excited to go on the big stage with my Welsh girls." Of those announced in the squad on Monday was Sophie Ingle who has been out since September with an injury. The 33-year-old damaged her anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for Chelsea in a pre-season friendly. Ingle who has won 141 caps and led Wales 83 times from 2015 to 2024 before stepping down from the role – has been in a race against time to make next month's Euros in Switzerland. Last month Wilkinson rated the former Wales captain as '50-50' to play at the Euros, saying she 'wanted her back but not at the risk of Sophie Ingle's knee'. Wilkinson's 23-strong squad for Wales' first major tournament includes a few surprises. Defender Rhiannon Roberts is included after injury ruled her out of Nations League action last month, and veteran forward Jess Fishlock is the star name in a squad skippered by her Seattle Reign team-mate Angharad James. The former Everton and Tottenham midfielder is one of four centurions in the squad, alongside Fishlock, Ingle and Hayley Ladd. Aston Villa goalkeeper Soffia Kelly, Manchester City defender Mayzee Davies, Bristol City forward Tianna Teisar and Manchester United striker Mared Griffiths miss out after being in the squad for last month's Nations League games against Denmark and Italy. The 18-year-old Davies suffered a rupture to her ACL against Denmark and faces a considerable spell on the sidelines. Wales squad: O Clark (Leicester), S Middleton-Patel (Man Utd), P Soper (unattached), C Estcourt (DC Power), G Evans (Liverpool), J Green (C Palace), H Ladd (Everton), E Morgan (Sheff Utd), E Powell (Bristol City), R Roberts (unattached), L Woodham (Seattle Reign), A Griffiths (unattached), J Fishlock (Seattle Reign), C Holland (Liverpool), S Ingle (unattached), A James (Seattle Reign), L Joel (Newcastle), R Rowe (Southampton), K Barton (unattached), H Cain (Leicester), E Hughes (C Palace), C Jones (IFK Norrkoping), F Morgan (Bristol City).

'World's best theme park' is just hours away from UK but has no rides

If you are looking for an alternative holiday spot this summer, one woman has just the recommendation. Despite being named 'best theme park in the world' twice, Puy du Fou in the Pays de la Loire region of France remains a hidden gem to many. Travel expert Bonnie Rakhit posted a clip on TikTok showcasing her visit to what she claims is the country's "best kept secret." "It's without doubt the most magical theme park I have ever visited," she exclaimed. Just an hour's drive from Nantes, Bonnie suggests the site is the perfect quick getaway from the UK. So what makes this place so unique? "There are no rides here," says Bonnie. "Instead you go on a time-travelling adventure from Roman gladiators to Viking raids, and the legend of King Arthur to the splendour of the Palace of Versailles across 50 hectares of breathtaking scenery." Bonnie also notes that the park is home to 20 internationally acclaimed shows, providing an all-encompassing experience for the entire family. Each spectacle has been translated into English, with scripts accessible through the park's mobile app. "The magic doesn't stop at night," Bonnie added. "We stayed at Le Grand Siecle - a hotel inspired by Louis XIV's Court. There's also a medieval village, a Camelot-style tented camp, an ancient Roman town and a castle called the Citadel." Concluding her review, Bonnie said Puy Du Fou plays host to over 2.8million visitors annually. "It's easy to see why," she said. "It's inspiring and completely unique - this isn't just a theme park, it's a journey through time. Add it to your bucket list." Engaging with her post on TikTok, one fan raved: "I have been a few times and it is insane, seriously amazing. The Coliseum is crazy!" Another person remarked: "I love Puy de Fou, used to live in Nantes and went many times. The evening shows are amazing! Planet Sauvage is also fab and the best safari park I have ever seen." Whilst a third praised: "This is genuinely the best park I have ever been to! So incredible I would say Europa Park is good for rollercoasters (although i don't think it's the best one in Europe but it's nice) but Puy Du Fou is amazing for story telling! Like incredibly impressive!". According to the English language section of the Puy de Fou official website, prices for an overnight stay start from £63.38 per person. This not only includes entry to the park and all its spectacles but also an overnight hotel stay complete with breakfast (at either an on-site hotel or in partnership accommodations near Puy du Fou) and complimentary translation services for all attractions. For those looking to visit the park alone, tickets are available for one, two, or three-day adventures, kicking off at a modest £31.69 per person. The site further states: "The Puy du Fou experience is designed for all ages to enjoy. Children and parents alike will be captivated all the way through as the shows are short and feature many amazing effects. "The few scenes that may alarm very young children due to their spectacular realism are indicated by a symbol in the mobile app and Visitor Guide."

London to Dubai BA flight turns back 90 minutes from landing after Iran strikes

A flight from London to Dubai was forced to turn back less than two hours before it was due to land following Donald Trump's air strike on Iran. British Airways Flight 109 left Heathrow at 9.53pm on Saturday night – hours before the US dropped bombs on three of Tehran's nuclear sites. The Boeing 787 flew five hours on its path, which would have taken it over Egypt, the Red Sea and then across Saudi Arabia. However, with less than two hours before its scheduled arrival in the UAE, the jet turned around at 2.48am after receiving news of the latest developments in Iran. Dubai is less than 100 miles from Iranian airspace. Because the aircraft did not have sufficient fuel to fly back to London, the crew made the decision to land in Zurich in Switzerland instead. Airlines have been forced to reroute flights around Israel, Iran and several surrounding nations, with European carriers also avoiding Ukrainian and Russian airspace. Flights between Europe and Asia typically travel over Egypt and then Saudi Arabia or across Turkish, Armenian and Georgian airspace to circumvent the trouble spots. BA has since cancelled all three planned departures to Dubai on Sunday, while around 1,000 of its passengers remain stuck in the Gulf city awaiting a return flight. The airline also axed a Sunday night flight bound for Doha in Qatar, the Independent reported. More Trending Emirates' operation remains unaffected, with its flights from UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham all leaving as normal. Tehran warned of 'everlasting consequences' after the US said it had 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear program. British Airways said: 'As a result of recent events, we have adjusted our flight schedule to ensure the safety of our customers and crew, which is always our top priority. 'We are contacting our customers to advise them of their options while we work through this developing situation.'
