Why Marco Sturm was ‘selfishly' happy the Bruins didn't play well last season

Yahoo13-06-2025

BOSTON — The Bruins finished the 2024-25 season at the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016.
But for new coach Marco Sturm, he didn't mind how the season panned out.

'Selfishly, I'm glad the Bruins didn't play well last year because otherwise I wouldn't be here,' Sturm said Tuesday after he was officially introduced as the Bruins coach.
The Bruins faced a slew of issues last season throughout the lineup. An 8-9-3 start led to the dismissal of Jim Montgomery, but Boston never quite found a steady groove under interim coach Joe Sacco.
Sturm, who spent five seasons with the Bruins, knows what it takes to win and knows what the fans expect. Offense is atop Sturm's list of areas to address immediately, but understands there are no quick fixes.
'It's not going to happen overnight, but that's something I will address right away,' he said.

The Bruins averaged 2.71 goals per game last year, which was tied for last in the Eastern Conference. Their power play ranked 29th, and the team had just two players — David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie — to reach the 20-goal mark.
Despite the issues at hand, Sturm is confident in the Bruins due to the talent they already have on the roster. But he knows talent alone won't be enough to get Boston back on track.
'I'm really looking forward to also pushing the team to the next level,' Sturm said. 'It's going to be up to me and my coaching staff, up to my players, up to management and also up to the fans of the Boston Bruins.
'I know we have a lot of work to do and we won't fix it overnight. But it will start Day 1 of training camp,' he added. 'Teams win championships, not one coach or one player.'

Celtics Predicted to Make Trade With Utah Jazz Before NBA Draft

Celtics Predicted to Make Trade With Utah Jazz Before NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics are in a pickle this offseason. They want to avoid the NBA's second tax apron while remaining a title contender. That will mean some players will have to go to make it work. Advertisement It is a shame because Brad Stevens cleverly constructed a title team, but in the modern NBA, maintaining a title status has become more complicated than ever. The NBA's tax aprons force teams to pull the plug on their teams sooner than they would in the past. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have been the trade candidates that have come up the most. Both played a massive role in the franchise winning its 18th title in 2024. However, even if Boston trades both, they may not be the only ones who get the axe. Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.© Winslow Townson-Imagn Images Another candidate is Sam Hauser, who will enter the first year of a four-year, $45 million contract next season. PhillyVoice's Adam Aaronson proposed a deal in which the Celtics would trade Hauser and the No. 32 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to the Utah Jazz for the No. 21 pick. He explained why both sides would agree to a deal. Advertisement "Boston needs to trade Hauser this summer as part of their cost-cutting measures despite his elite three-point shooting and valuable contract," Aaronson wrote. "...The Jazz seem to be looking to improve after posting the worst record in the NBA last season, and dropping 11 spots in this range to add a shooter of Hauser's caliber on such a team-friendly deal is an obvious win." Stevens would make a trade with his front office predecessor, Danny Ainge. While that connection could make a trade more likely, Stevens has gotten in the way of the Jazz's offseason plans before, as they wanted Porzingis and Holiday two years ago before the Celtics got them. That could factor into whether Utah wants to deal with Boston.
