
AI sludge has entered the job search
Katie Tanner, a human resource consultant in Utah, knew the job would be popular: It was fully remote, was at a tech company and required only three years of experience.
But she was still shocked by the response on LinkedIn. After 12 hours, 400 applications had been submitted. By 24 hours, there were 600. A few days later, there were more than 1,200, at which point she removed the post. Three months later, she's still whittling down candidates.
'It's crazy,' she said. 'You just get inundated.'
The number of applications submitted on LinkedIn has surged more than 45% in the past year. The platform is clocking an average of 11,000 applications per minute, and generative artificial intelligence tools are contributing to the deluge.
With a simple prompt, ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by OpenAI, will insert every keyword from a job description into a resume. Some candidates are going a step further, paying for AI agents that can autonomously find jobs and apply on their behalf. Recruiters say it's getting harder to tell who is genuinely qualified or interested, and many of the resumes look suspiciously similar.
'It's an 'applicant tsunami' that's just going to get bigger,' said Hung Lee, a former recruiter who writes a widely read newsletter about the industry.
One popular method for navigating the surge? Automatic chat or video interviews, sometimes conducted by AI. Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright, said at a conference this month that its AI chatbot screening and scheduling tool (named Ava Cado) had reduced hiring time by 75%.
HireVue, a popular AI video interview platform, offers recruiters an option to have AI assess responses and rank candidates.
But candidates can also use AI to cheat in these interviews, and some companies have added more automated skill assessments early in the hiring process. For example, HireVue offers AI-powered games to gauge abilities like pattern recognition and working memory, and a virtual 'tryout' that tests emotional intelligence or skills like counting change. Sometimes, Lee said, 'we end up with an AI versus AI type of situation.'
In January, the Justice Department announced indictments in a scheme to place North Korean nationals in IT roles working remotely at U.S. companies. Emi Chiba, a human resource technology analyst at Gartner, told DealBook that reports of candidates who used fake identities had been 'growing and growing and growing.'
A report that Chiba published with other Gartner analysts in April estimated that by 2028, about 1 in 4 job applicants could be made up. Among its recommendations was that companies deploy more sophisticated identity-verification software.
To address the problem, LinkedIn recently added tools to help both candidates and recruiters narrow their focus, including an AI agent, introduced in October, that can write follow-up messages, conduct screening chats with candidates, suggest top applicants and search for potential hires using natural language.
A feature that shows potential applicants how well their qualifications match up with a job description, which LinkedIn introduced to premium subscribers in January, reduced the rate at which they apply to 'low match' jobs by 10%, according to the company.
Concerns that using AI in hiring can introduce bias have led to lawsuits and a patchwork of state legislation. The European Union's AI Act classifies hiring under its high-risk category, with the most stringent restrictions, and while no U.S. federal law specifically addresses AI use in hiring, general antidiscrimination laws can potentially come into play if the result of any process is discrimination.
'You're not allowed to discriminate, and of course most employers are trying not to discriminate, but easier said than done,' said Marcia Goodman, a partner at Mayer Brown who primarily represents employers.
The problem is less that candidates are using AI — a skill many employers say they want — than it is that they're being sloppy. Alexa Marciano, the managing director of Syndicatebleu, a recruiting agency, said job seekers were reacting to recruiters' use of automated screening. 'It's really frustrating for the candidates because they spend all this time creating very catered cover letters, very catered resumes,' she said.
Jeremy Schifeling, a career coach who regularly conducts technology-focused job-search training at universities, said he could see this back-and-forth going on for a while. 'As students get more desperate, they say, 'Well, I have no choice but to up the ante with these paid tools to automate everything.' And I'm sure the recruiters are going to raise the bar again.'
He argues the endgame will be authenticity from both sides. But, he said, 'I do think that a lot of people are going to waste a lot of time, a lot of processing power, a lot of money until we reach that realization.'

'It's a 3-4 week remote project with no stipend, but a good opportunity to work closely with the leadership team on strategic initiatives,' the Dubai-based employee revealed. He called the position 'Ideal for someone looking to get real-world exposure and contribute meaningfully.' The backlash The backlash was swift, massive and entirely expected. In the comments section of the post, many called out Deshmukh for expecting MBA students to work for free. has reached out to him for a statement. This copy will be updated on receiving a response. 'Let's put an end to the exploitation of unpaid internships. As Indians, it's time we speak up against a toxic work culture that normalizes offering no stipend in exchange for full-time effort,' wrote one LinkedIn user. 'And the saga of unpaid work (in the name of 'gaining experience'), keeps on thriving. Quite sad,' another said. 'Pay. It's not a difficult thing to do. Don't loot people in the name of experience,' LinkedIn user Piyush said. 'You want people from top B-schools to put their heart and soul into a project , 'contribute meaningfully' but with no stipend? Crazy,' another added. The post also reached Reddit, where reactions were overwhelmingly negative. 'Getting freshers with no experience a start is different, hiring generic MBAs is different. Japan, South Korea mark 60 years of ties despite tensions, uncertainty
Japan and South Korea are marking the 60th anniversary of the normalisation of their diplomatic relations Sunday. The two Asian powers, rivals and neighbours, have often had little to celebrate, much of their rancour linked to Japan's brutal colonial rule of Korea in the early 20th century. Things have gotten better in recent years, but both nations, each a strong ally of the United States now face political uncertainty and a growing unease about the future of their ties. Here's a look at one of Northeast Asia's most crucial relationships, from both capitals, by two correspondents from The Associated Press. The view from Seoul South Korea's new liberal president, Lee Jae Myung, is determined to break sharply from the policies of his disgraced predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, who now faces a trial on charges of leading an insurrection over his imposition of martial law in December. Relations with Japan, however, are one area where Lee, who describes himself as a pragmatist in foreign policy, may find himself cautiously building on Yoon's approach. Before his removal from office in April, the conservative former president tried to repair relations with Japan. Yoon wanted to also tighten the countries' three-way security cooperation with Washington to counter North Korean nuclear threats. In 2023, Yoon announced a South Korea-funded compensation plan for colonial-era forced laborers. That decision caused a strong backlash from victims and their supporters, who had demanded direct payments from Japanese companies and a fresh apology from Tokyo. Yoon's outreach boosted tourism and business ties, but there's still lingering resentment in South Korea that Japan failed to reciprocate Seoul's diplomatic concession by addressing historical grievances more sincerely. While advocating for pragmatism and problem-solving in foreign policy, Lee has also long criticized Japan for allegedly clinging to its imperialist past and blamed that for hurting cooperation between the countries. Some experts say the stability of the countries' improved ties could soon be tested, possibly around the Aug. 15 anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II, when Lee is expected to publicly address the nation's painful history with Japan. Some in Seoul want Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to mark the anniversary with a stronger statement of remorse over Japan's wartime past to put bilateral ties on firmer ground. While wartime history will always linger in the background of Seoul-Tokyo relations, Lee and Ishiba may face a more immediate concern: US President Donald Trump's rising tariffs and other America-first trade policies. South Korea's Hankyoreh newspaper in an editorial this week called for South Korea and Japan to collaborate immediately on a joint response to Trump's policies, arguing that the proposed US tariffs on automobiles pose similar threats to both countries' trade-dependent economies. The view from Tokyo Ishiba, eager to improve ties with Seoul, has acknowledged Japan's wartime aggression and has shown more empathy to Asian victims than his recent predecessors. His first encounter with Lee seemed positive, despite worries in Japan about South Korea's stance under a liberal leader known for attacks on Japan's wartime past. Lee, in that meeting with Ishiba at the G7, likened the two countries to neighbours sharing the same front yard and called for building a future-oriented relationship that moves beyond their small differences and disagreements. Ishiba and Lee agreed to closely communicate and to cooperate on a range of issues, including North Korea's nuclear and missile development. Under a 1965 normalization treaty, Japan provided $500 million in economic assistance to South Korea, saying all wartime compensation issues were settled. However, historical issues including forced labour and sexual abuse of Korean women during the war have disrupted ties over the decades, while South Korea has become an Asian power and a rival to Japan, and while Tokyo, especially during the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe 's rule, has promoted revisionist views. Japan has since offered atonement money twice for the so-called comfort women, an earlier semi-private fund and a second one unilaterally dissolved by former South Korean President Moon Jae-in's liberal government. Things have improved in recent years, and Japan is watching to see whether Lee sticks with his conservative predecessor's more conciliatory diplomacy or returns to the confrontation that marked previous liberal governments. Cooperation between the two sides is more essential than ever to overcome their shared problems such as worsening regional security and Trump's tariffs that have shaken free trade systems, Japan's largest-circulation newspaper Yomiuri said in a recent editorial. At a 60th anniversary reception in Tokyo, Ishiba said that he sees a bright future in the relationship. He expressed hope also for cooperation in common challenges such as low birth rates and declining populations.
