Tom Aspinall's First Words in Reaction to Jon Jones' Announcement
Tom Aspinall's First Words in Reaction to Jon Jones' Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC heavyweight Tom Aspinall didn't need to fight Jon Jones to get the belt he was after. Advertisement Following UFC Baku on Saturday, June 21, Dana White confirmed that Jones had officially retired, making Aspinall the new undisputed UFC heavyweight champion amid a rather confusing night in Europe. The announcement brings closure to one of the most prolonged storylines in the division, even though it has featured no action inside the Octagon. 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired,' White said. 'Jon Jones is officially retired, and Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.' Aspinall, who had held the interim title since 2023, shared his response in a short message posted to Instagram while taking a subtle shot at Jones for delaying things so much before ultimately hanging up his gloves. 'For you fans,' Aspinall wrote. 'It's time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.' Advertisement Aspinall's post marks the end of a two-year standoff between Aspinall and Jones. Jones had publicly dismissed the idea of a unification bout multiple times, despite Aspinall compiling an 8–1 UFC record at heavyweight and defending the interim belt against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. A Jones-Aspinall clash never materialized, and with Jones' retirement now confirmed, Aspinall assumes full control of the division he's long sought to conquer. Tom Aspinall prior to a UFC fight at O2 Haljestam-Imagn Images Aspinall has stayed mostly quiet during the wait, hinting at potential announcements but never getting quite there, opting to let the belt and his résumé speak and putting the ball on Jones' court. Advertisement Now, contenders like Jailton Almeida, Ciryl Gane, and Alex Pereira are circling the new champion and are expected to enter conversations with the UFC for the first title defense in Aspinall's reign as the heavyweight champion, even if he never quite won the belt proper. UFC World Reacts to Jon Jones' Unexpected Retirement
UFC World Reacts to Jon Jones' Unexpected Retirement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former UFC heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones officially retired from mixed martial arts on Saturday night, bringing an abrupt end to a Hall of Fame-caliber career. Advertisement Jones hangs up his gloves after spending nearly two decades in the MMA circuit and after becoming one of the youngest champions in UFC history. UFC president Dana White first broke the news during the press conference immediately following UFC Baku on Saturday, and Jones followed shortly with an official announcement posting a long statement on his X account. The news came with no prior warning from the fighter or the UFC, though Jones had not defended his heavyweight title since his win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024. Tom Aspinall is the new, reigning, and undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. Jones' inactivity, coupled with pressure from the promotion and interim champion Aspinall's rise, had fueled speculation about his future in recent months. Advertisement That said, his unannounced and completely unexpected retirement caught everybody by surprise. The 37-year-old Jones retires with a 28-1 record, and his lone loss came via disqualification all the way back in 2009. Jones dominated the light heavyweight division before transitioning to heavyweight in 2023, where he claimed the vacant title with a submission victory over Ciryl Gane after a three-year layoff. Jon Jones looks on during a stoppage amid a UFC Images Many UFC fighters jumped on the news and shared their thoughts on social media in reaction to Jones' retirement, offering different views about the development. 'For you fans,' new heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall wrote on IG. 'It's time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.' Advertisement "Jon Jones retired and there isn't anything massive put together for his announcement? Just a post fight 3 second clip of Dana annoying it….Seems like he'll be back to me," Julian Marquez said. "Congrats champ. You deserve that. Now, lets make the only fight who make sense! Aspinall vs Almeida for undisputed HW title of the world. Gane ducks you and me before, already fought for the belt and lost 2-times, and his last win was a robbery," Jailton Almeida posted. "Congrats Jon Jones. You the GOAT," Jake Paul wrote. "Alex pereira will fight aspinal for the heavyweight title! Change my mind! 👈" said Renato Moicano. Advertisement "New era has begun 🏆" posted Charles Johnson. "👀👀👀" Gilbert Burns posted without adding any words. "Glad Jon Jones didn't break Cain Velasquez HW title length as champion by not fighting. Glad MMA can move on from this chapter. It's #TomTime @AspinallMMA," Josh Thomson commented. BKFC 76 results: Jessica Eye wins first fight back from retirement, beats UFC veteran Mariya Agapova
Jessica Eye is going home with a couple of cuts and some new bruises but a win on her record as the one-time UFC title challenger returned from retirement and beat Mariya Agapova at BKFC 76. The story of the fight was volume and accuracy with Eye outlanding Agapova by a wide margin as she consistently pressed forward to close the distance and then unloaded with a barrage of punches. When it was over, Eye had clearly done enough to earn the victory with the judges scoring the contest 49-45, 50-44 and 49-45 in her favor as she moves to 1-0 in the BKFC ring. Advertisement 'These bruises heal but the evil lives on,' Eye shouted to the Texas crowd. 'That's what you guys came here for. Are you not entertained?' The flyweights traded body shots to open the fight with Agapova then looked to use her reach at distance while Eye was methodically stalking her across the ring. While she did end up with a cut over her eye from an early exchange, Eye showed a lot of confidence while coming after Agapova while trying to set up a heavy right hand. Eye continuously looked to get inside while pressing Agapova against the ropes and then unleashing a barrage of punches. A couple of wild exchanges saw both fighters land some solid shots but Eye was landing with better power. The end of the third round saw Eye finally unleash her biggest succession of punches as she went hard to the body and then back up top to the head just before the bell sounded. Advertisement The crowd was getting a little restless as Eye was constantly pressing forward, pushing Agapova into the ropes and then trying to throw punches on the inside. That inevitably led to the referee breaking them apart and resetting in the center of the ring. Eye did manage to clip Agapova with a stiff right hand just before the fourth round ended that definitely got her attention. With two minutes remaining, Eye kept moving forward aggressively when she popped Agapova, who stumbled backwards before hitting the canvas. While Agapova complained that she got shoved rather than knocked down, the referee administered the required count before allowing the action to continue. Eye went back to the body again with another blistering combination just before the fight came to an end. Overall, Eye threw over 300 strikes during the fight and she connected with more than 200 shots, which was far more than Agapova across the five round fight. Advertisement Following nearly three years out of action, the 38-year-old veteran returned with a win on Saturday and it appears Eye plans to keep going with a new career started as a member of the BKFC roster.
