Emergency search for missing man in plane crash will continue until sundown, official says
Search efforts for a missing Spanish man in the waters off Newfoundland will continue until sunset Wednesday, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax.
The search began on Tuesday when an Air Tractor AT-802 crashed 240 kilometres east of St. John's at around 8:40 a.m that morning. Wednesday's search involves the Canadian Coast Guard, a Hercules aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter, according to JRCC Lt.-Cmdr. Len Hickey.
"The intent is to carry on with search until sundown tonight. At that time, all assets involved in the search are going to return to base and the case is going to be turned over to the RCMP as a missing persons [investigation]," Hickey told CBC News Wednesday afternoon.
He added the decision to hand the investigation to police is based on survivability modelling of the crash.
"Normally it's policy by JRCC to go well past what would be expected for someone to survive in this scenario," Hickey said. "When they're confident that they've certainly been out there searching well past the chance that the person would survive, then it's passed on."
This missing man is from Spain, Hickey said, and was piloting the plane he recently purchased from the United States. The plane was destined for the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal.
"He was flying that aircraft up the eastern seaboard. The intent was for the last touch point in North America to be St. John's, and then they were going to make the hop across the Atlantic," Hickey said.
Searchers found an oil slick on the water near the crash site Tuesday. Hickey said it's too early to tell if it — or the crash — was caused by a mechanical issue with the plane.
Search conditions had improved on Wednesday, he added.

'It breaks my heart,' Cordeiro added. 'I'm here with my kids and my husband was here, and we're probably the same age.' 'When we got here today earlier this morning [the waves] were about a good solid metre and a half, and I noticed that the water was really cold. It's a bad mix for people going out there getting too cold and then getting extra tired. Where when the waves are warm, people can swim out there longer without getting as tired.' Decorte echoed that sentiment, 'With the water not being warm yet, it's hard to swim in,' he said. 'So maybe that played some of the part too in the waves.' Early in the evening, OPP brought ATVs to use on the long stretch of beach as the search continues.

A lack of qualified personnel at the coast guard's Sea Island station in Richmond have left the air-cushioned vehicles without crews to operate them since last week, the agency confirmed to CTV News on Thursday. 'Hovercraft piloting requires officers be certified in the operation of air-cushioned vehicles,' coast guard spokesperson Anna Muselius said in an emailed statement Thursday. 'An unanticipated crewing shortage at the Canadian Coast Guard Sea Island Station has temporarily limited hovercraft operations since Friday, June 13.' The two B.C.-based hovercraft, CCGS Moytel and CCGS Siyay, are commonly called upon for rapid, shallow-water responses at beaches and other areas that are otherwise inaccessible to rigid-hulled boats. Open-source vessel-tracking websites showed both hovercraft parked on the shore at the Sea Island station Thursday morning. The coast guard says search-and-rescue operations in the region are being maintained by fast-rescue inflatable boats while the hovercraft are out of service. The agency says volunteers with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue are also 'at the ready and able to assist in the event of an emergency in the area.' The coast guard did not have a timeline available for when the hovercraft would return to service.
