Drishyam 3 major tease revealed as iconic thriller returns for final chapter. Check expected release date, Mohanlal's role, plot, cast

Time of India5 hours ago

The makers of Drishyam 3 have officially confirmed that filming will begin in October 2025, bringing
Malayalam cinema
's iconic suspense thriller back into production after a four-year wait since the second part. The update was shared by Aashirvad Cinemas through a social media video featuring director Jeethu Joseph, lead actor Mohanlal, and producer Antony Perumbavoor in an emotional reunion. The announcement, captioned 'The past never stays silent,' quickly generated quite a buzz among fans.
The original Drishyam, released in 2013, redefined the crime-thriller genre in Indian cinema, with Mohanlal's Georgekutty—an ordinary cable TV operator—turning into a household name for his cleverness in shielding his family. Its sequel, Drishyam 2, released in 2021 on OTT during the pandemic, garnered nationwide acclaim and significantly boosted Malayalam cinema's visibility across India. Now, nearly 13 years since the first film began production, the final chapter is set to unfold.
Mohanlal Returns as Georgekutty
Mohanlal will reprise his celebrated role as Georgekutty, a man who goes to extreme lengths to protect his family. Meena, Esther Anil, and Ansiba Hassan also return as Georgekutty's wife and daughters, along with Asha Sharath as IG Geetha, the officer determined to uncover the truth. The familiar ensemble is expected to be joined by new characters, although details remain undisclosed.
Drishyam followed Georgekutty's desperate attempt to cover up a crime committed by his family, leading to a brilliantly staged deception that leaves the police baffled. In Drishyam 2, the stakes escalated with the emergence of a witness claiming to know the truth. Despite the renewed investigation, Georgekutty managed to stay ahead of the law once again. The third instalment is expected to address unresolved threads while challenging Georgekutty's moral compass further.
Jeethu Joseph Refines the Plot
Director Jeethu Joseph has revealed that the script for Drishyam 3 has been in development for months. While the climax was conceptualised early, efforts have been ongoing to refine the plot and deepen character arcs. He and Mohanlal have been in constant discussion to ensure the film maintains the standard set by its predecessors. Mohanlal has previously acknowledged the challenge of surpassing the expectations set by Drishyam 2.
Reports suggest that a parallel shoot for the Hindi version, starring Ajay Devgn, may also take place around the same time, though it remains unclear which version will release first. This signals a more coordinated pan-India strategy compared to the earlier staggered remakes. With the Malayalam original maintaining its core identity, any additional versions are expected to tailor elements to their regional audiences.
Production and Technical Crew
Aashirvad Cinemas continues to produce the film, with Jeethu Joseph at the helm. The cinematography will once again be handled by Sujith Vaassudev. Music will be composed by Vinu Thomas, and the background score will be by Anil Johnson—both of whom contributed to the franchise's previous success.
Release Timeline
Although filming starts in October 2025, the release is likely slated for late 2026. The team is expected to follow a tight three-month shooting schedule, returning to familiar locations in Thodupuzha and Kochi that have become synonymous with the franchise's atmospheric storytelling.
With the conclusion of Georgekutty's journey approaching, Drishyam 3 aims to offer a satisfying and gripping finale to one of Malayalam cinema's most influential film series.

Box Office Trends: Sitaare Zameen Par explodes with 200 percent jump from Friday to Sunday; Aamir Khan roars back into spotlight

The Aamir Khan led Sitaare Zameen Par has gone on an overdrive on Sunday, with early trends indicating third day business in the range of Rs 28.50 crore to Rs 30.50 crore. While a Rs 28 crore plus dayis assured, there is an outside chance for the film to even hit the Rs 31 crore mark, depending on how the film performs in the late evening and night shows. With this, the 3 day weekend of Sitaare Zameen Par stands at Rs 60.00 crore, and the film will be looking to record a superlative trend in the coming weeks. The film is showing an insane trend at the box-office, as rarely have we seen films jump from the Rs 10 crore mark on Friday to Rs 30 crore (200 percent up) mark on Sunday, more so in the post pandemic world. But again, Aamir Khan too has not arrived with a good content film in the last 5 years, and the master has now scripted his own comeback by going against the tide. Aamir happens to be one of the biggest crowd pullers of Indian Cinema, and it was just a matter of good film for him to re-establish the connect with his audience, which has now happened with Sitaare Zameen Par if the weekend trend is anything to go by. Sitaare Zameen Par is showing a near 60 percent spike in business in the national multiplex chains, as the film has hit Rs 12.10 crore on Sunday at 3 PM in PVRInox and Cinepolis, as compared to Rs 7.90 crore on Saturday at the same time. The film is headed to collect Rs 20.00 crore in the national chains by end of Sunday, growing about 42 percent from Saturday. The hearting sign rests in the fact that the non-national chains and single screens too have come on board Sitaare Zameen Par on Sunday, which is an indication of the film looking to sustain well in the long run. Sitaare Zameen Par had everything going against it prior to the release, being a remake, with not-so-impactful music, a non-action social dramedy devoid of a big star cast, but all it took is positive talk from the audience to turn the tides in its favour. And one must give complete credit to Aamir Khan for sticking to his conviction with this RS Prasanna directorial. These are still estimates based on the very early trends and the actuals will be reported by the end of day. Here's a look at the day wise box office collections of Sitaare Zameen Par Friday: Rs 10.50 crore Saturday: Rs 19.50 crore Sunday: Rs 29.50 crore (Expected) Total: Rs 59.50 crore

‘There's a thairaav in Metro…in the words and performances.'

Q. How did you end up in the Basu da romantic universe? He messaged; we have been in touch for some time, not for this. I am a bit shy in trying to tell the person I want to work with. But he is perceptive, so I guess he kept me in mind.Q. It's been nearly two decades since Life in aMetro. Its songs and scenes continue to pop up on social media every now and then. What do you most recall about it?advertisementIt was very cool. At the time the only kind of films like it were Crash and Babel, which were very serious. In the Indian context, with the love stories intertwining and the musical approach, this was refreshing. Recently, my wife [Richa Chadha] and I were watching songs from the first Metro and it felt like some things are just perfectly etched in time. Time just goes still. You see Nafisa Ali, Dharmendra and Irrfan; you can't get your eyes off Nafisa ma'am. Now the songs we do and the way we showcase the narrative overall, it is a little more paced. You can see in Metro there's thairaav (gravitas). Perhaps it's in this one, too, in the words and performances.Q. Romance too has evolved from then [2007] to now? Does the film capture that change?advertisementYes. Anurag Basu is a perceptive filmmaker; you see the pace of a metro in his film. Earlier people from other cities used to lose themselves in Mumbai. I remember sitting and dreaming on Marine Drive that I would do this and do that. There were no reels to get distracted by. Now there are other outlets for venting. But the core issues are similar and the emotions are the same. Everybody is going through some form of trauma, that has come from somewhere–generational, daddy issues, triggers in relationship, extramarital affairs, situationship These are new labels. There are the nine rasas in the different permutations and combinations.Q. Tell us about your track with Fatima Sana a more elevated track emotionally. The fun banter is there, but it's limited as opposed to Sara [Ali Khan] and Adi's [Aditya Roy Kapur]. There's a bit of gloom. It hits you like a train, then it is all downhill. It's a lot of ups and downs. It's the real life, coming to Mumbai to realise your dreams, paying rent while you are in love That's the brutal truth, he has shown how you fight through that. Ek zidd hai (there is a stubbornness).advertisementQ. And the stories are intertwining? But very subtly. I think Basu da is playing on something else that none of the actors know about. Pankaj [Tripathi] ji told me the other day that there was a car that comes and I stop and it almost hits me. Now he is sitting in the car.Q. Basu is one of the last of the Mohicans in how he sees and treats romances. What was it like working with him?He leaves you hungry for more. I really hope my paths cross with him in a more expanded is a certified genius, who works differently and has everything calculated, but he leaves room for actors to bring in their game. There's a lot of unsaid stuff that went on between us which I will cherish. He will give you a clue to see it, then it is you making a choice. It's beautiful to have a director championing you.Q. You donned the producer's hat last year with Girls Will Be Girls, which won a lot of critical acclaim and accolades to go with it. What's brewing with your production banner, Pushing Buttons? It's so nice to be able to make cinema that we wanted to watch. Richa and I want to do that again and again. Some of the studios have been good with us. The Amazon Prime release for the film helped in a big way. The idea is good films be made, we desperately need are in pre-production for two films and one show for which we await the greenlight. Richa is acting in one, I am doing one. That's because of the director's choices rather than us being You have also done Lahore 1947 with Sunny Deol and Shabana (Khan) sir was very instrumental in convincing me to step in. Raj ji [Kumar Santoshi, director] was gung-ho about narrating me this track, which has its own thing going on. The powers that be will decide when it comes out. I have two to three days of patchwork shoot to India Today Magazine
