Slidell Police Chief talks benefits of approved pay raise
SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — In Slidell, pay raises for the Slidell Police Department were officially approved. It's something Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal is calling a collective effort.
The department is filled with gratitude after the city council unanimously voted to close a significant gap in salaries.
Fandal says for the last four years they've been working to secure the raise, even bringing in a third-party company to do an in-depth pay study, identifying the deficiencies in their pay compared to other police departments.

'We were about 25% lower than the rest of the agencies in benefits and pay on the North Shore, so we went to work and we were able to at least come up to the same amount, or maybe a little bit more,' said Fandal.
A 1.5% annual step increase from years one to 30, increased degree pay and even retirement contributions are just a few approved recommendations going forward.
The chief adds just before the announcement, the department was short 10 officers, however since the news it's down to four.
'We just signed some papers to hire three new cadets, which will start in July. So as soon as this went out, we started seeing some people want to come to this agency. Even younger officers wanting to come on,' said Fandal.

Explaining this raise was a team effort.
'Working closely with the city council, the citizens helped the administration help. Everybody saw the need to bring the pay and the benefit package up and this allows us to keep working toward helping the other employees of the city,' said Fandal.
Now, with a new building and pay raises coming, Fandal emphasizes what this means from a public safety standpoint.
'The citizens want a safe community and we're going to give them a say. We've been giving them a safe community for the last several years, many years. That we are going to have a fully staffed police department and a new building, exciting times,' said Chief Fandal.

Metairie man to serve 30 years for 2019, 2021 sex abuse crimes
JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Metairie man found guilty in May of drugging and sexually abusing teenagers, has been sentenced. On Thursday, June 12, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office announced 46-year-old Thomas Welty will serve 30 years in prison convicted of: Second-degree rape and trafficking children for sexual purposes involving one victim Indecent behavior with a juvenile Contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile Sexual battery of the other victim On May 20, Welty was found guilty of the crimes that happened between 2019 and 2021 with 15-year-old victims. Former OPSO employee arrested, accused of conspiring to bring drugs into Orleans Parish jail Court documents noted the abuse began during the 2019 Carnival season when Welty provided one victim with alcohol until she ultimately passed out. That's when he took her to his home and injected her with a 'highly addictive methamphetamine.' The encounter caused the victim to develop an addiction to the drug, documents noted. After raping her, Welty allowed two drug-dealing associates to do the same in exchange for narcotics (they have never been identified). During that same month, Welty had given a 'date rape' drug, GHB, to a second victim. She also passed out but woke up in the shower with Welty, according to court documents. It was also noted that the second victim rejected his sexual advances and left his house. During the trial, one victim's impact statement read: 17-year-old shot, killed in St. John the Baptist Parish 'I choose to forgive what you've done, but not for you,' the victim wrote. 'I'm forgiving you for myself, because at the end of the day I need to heal – not you. 'I was so grateful to learn that every seven years, every cell in your entire body is being replaced. And with that being said, how great is it to know that I will finally have a body you will have never touched.' New Orleans police celebrate new K-9 unit facility
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the New Orleans Police Department and city leaders cut the ribbon on a new, state-of-the-art kennel facility for the department's K-9 unit. The $316,000 project also includes upgrades to fencing and elevation for flood protection. NOPD Lt. New record-setting high point for New Orleans tourism since pandemic
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of New Orleans is reporting a major tourism milestone. Officials with New Orleans and Company announced that in 2024, visitation in the city exceeded the 19 million mark for only the second time in history. A study conducted by New Orleans and Company revealed, the city welcomed 19.08 million visitors in 2024, a 6.4% increase from 2023s 17.93 million visitors and close to the 19.75 million point from 2019. Additionally, the visitors spent $10.4 billion which is an 8.4% increase from 2023's $9.6 billion and 2019's high of $10.045 billion.
