Larkham says Brumbies peaking at right time ahead of Super Rugby semi

France 2411-06-2025

The Canberra-based side travel to Hamilton for the bumper clash on Saturday with an unchanged squad for the first time this season, spearheaded by a slew of Wallabies including Allan Alaalatoa and James Slipper.
But they are battling the odds, having exited in the semi-finals to New Zealand clubs in the last three years, while the Chiefs are unbeaten against them in four games.
Larkham said he was optimistic they can make the final, which will be in Canberra if they beat the Chiefs and the Auckland Blues topple the Canterbury Crusaders in the other last-four clash.
"The boys are peaking at the right time. I thought they played really well on the weekend," he said, referring to their 35-28 takedown of the in-form Wellington Hurricanes in their elimination final.
"The selection is based on performance, but we also certainly want continuity going into the finals. And it's nice to have at this stage of the season.
"We'll make sure that we keep our emotions in check this week. The boys can get a lot of confidence out of the way that we're playing.
"There's a lot of stats that show that we're playing very good footy and we've also shown consistency throughout the season."
The Chiefs have been the standout club all season and are looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year after a 20-19 defeat to the defending champion Blues last weekend.
Larkham said the Brumbies would not be "copying" the Blues' playbook, with his team "in a pretty good space in terms of our routine".
"We've got a plan this week in terms of some of the stuff that we've been building on through the year, and then some specific stuff for the Chiefs," he said.
"There's a few challenges. The Chiefs are different to the Hurricanes.

Farrell adamant Lions 'won't suger-coat' Argentina loss

The Lions lost after their second-half fightback on Friday was cut short by Santiago Cordero's match-winning try for the Pumas in the 59th minute. Farrell's squad, comprised of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, travel to Australia on Saturday before facing the Perth-based Western Force a week later in the first of several warm-up games ahead of a three-Test series with the Wallabies. Argentina, ranked fifth in the world, had already defeated France, New Zealand, Australia and world champions South Africa in the past 12 months, with the Pumas tough opponents for a 'scratch' Lions side playing their first match of the tour. But Lions head coach Farrell, seconded to the combined side from his 'day job' as Ireland boss, refused to cite a lack of cohesion as the reason for his side's error-strewn display in front of a sold-out Aviva Stadium. "We made it a tough game," he said. "Congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the match. I'm sure that's a big moment in Argentinean rugby history. "We had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert them, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors." The former England international added: "I wouldn't give familiarity as an excuse. We need to be better than that. The Lions are good players coming together. "We won't sugar-coat this. We need to be honest because if we're not honest, how do we gain trust with each other? "Losing hurts, especially in this jersey. We need to find the solutions pretty quickly and be honest with ourselves because some good has to come from this." Farrell, reflecting on what had gone wrong against the Pumas, said: "The amount of balls that we threw blindly either on to the floor or to the opposition was a standout. "The scraps on the floor always seemed to go to Argentina, so there was a bit more fight and hunger from them that we can't accept." Maro Itoje criticised the Lions' lack of precision as the lock's first outing as their captain ended in the tourists' first defeat by Argentina in eight matches. "We gave ourselves numerous opportunities but we weren't accurate enough at times and weren't consistent enough in piling pressure on to Argentina," he said. Friday's reverse was the first time the Lions had lost their opening tour match since 1971. But that 15-11 defeat by Queensland in Brisbane was a prelude to one of the Lions' most celebrated triumphs -- a 2-1 Test series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.

Crusaders out-muscle Chiefs to clinch 15th Super Rugby crown

The home side were out-scored two tries to one in Christchurch but 11 points from the boot of fly-half Rivez Reihana proved decisive in a brutal contest dominated by defence. The Crusaders played no-frills rugby to extend their perfect record to 32 wins in home play-off matches since the competition began in 1996. The Chiefs finished runners-up for a third successive season, matching the unwanted record of South Africa's Lions from 2016-18. The result was a remarkable turnaround for Crusaders coach Rob Penney after his side failed to reach the play-offs last year. He steered his side to victory in 10 of their last 11 games of the season. Their 15 titles is 11 more than any other team, although two of them were won during the Covid-19 pandemic, when regional competitions were contested. Ahead 13-12 at the interval, Reihana's third penalty was the only score in a second half largely dominated by the Crusaders. They kept the game tight, relying on their trademark forward power that included a muscular scrum. It was enough to suffocate a Chiefs side laden with match-winners who had beaten the Crusaders in their two previous matches this season. The Chiefs struck first through a try to prop George Dyer after the Crusaders were reduced to 14 men with captain David Havili shown a yellow card for a high tackle. The home side levelled when Havili returned through a clever try to hooker Codie Taylor, who burst 20 metres down the blindside of a maul to score in the left corner. Reihana landed the sideline conversion and kicked two penalties in quick succession to put the Crusaders six points clear. The Chiefs closed to within one before the interval when fullback Shaun Stevenson crossed out wide off a long pass from lock Tupou Vaa'i. Errors crept into the Chiefs game as the pressure mounted and they spent much of the second half defending in their own territory. The match was the last in charge for coach Clayton McMillan, who was unable to end a Chiefs trophy drought dating back to 2013. McMillan takes over as head coach at Irish club Munster later this year.

Adidas strengthens ties with Juventus in $468 million contract extension

Adidas renewed its technical partnership with the Italian football club Juventus in June 2037 in a deal worth 408 million euros ($468 million) over a decade, the Serie A team said in a statement. According to the Turin-based club, the current contract, valid until June 2027, will remain unchanged. The new agreement will take effect from the 2027–2028 season and cover all Juventus teams through the end of the 2036–2037 season. "This renewal fills us with pride and testifies to the synergy between these two great companies," said Maurizio Scanavino, Juventus chief executive officer. Juventus, known for its black and white shirts, noted that the agreement's valuation excludes additional royalties for surpassing sales targets or performance-based bonuses. "We're delighted to extend our partnership with the most decorated club in Italian football for a further 10 years," said Sam Handy, general manager of Adidas Football. Juventus has won the Italian league title more than any other rival club. Juventus and Adidas began their collaboration in the 2015–2016 season. The German sportswear company also holds long-term partnerships with other top clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. It's deal with Manchester United runs through 2035. Last month, Juventus announced that U.S. carmaker Jeep will pay 69 million euros to remain its main shirt sponsor until June 2028. ($1 = 0.8715 euros) (Writing by Francesca Piscioneri.
