Boss uses a recruiter-approved coffee cup test in every interview—and he won't hire anyone who fails it

Yahoo06-04-2025

There's another red flag test to have on your radar, this time involving coffee cups. One boss says he won't hire anyone who fails it—and recruiters tell Fortune it actually works.
Previously, we've heard from a CEO who rejects job candidates who say they can start right away and the sneaky salt and pepper test that plagues lunch interviews.
Now, there's a coffee cup test to add to job seekers' list of hoops they need to jump through to land a job in today's tough market.
The trick was described by an Australian boss, Trent Innes, who is the former managing director of accounting platform Xeno, and now works as the chief growth officer at SiteMinder.
Speaking on the business podcast "The Ventures," Innes said he always takes prospective employees for a walk to the kitchen for a beverage—and although he calls it a coffee cup test, it's not about whether you take your caffeine hit black or with sugar. You could even forgo coffee for water or tea and still pass the test.
It's what you do with your cup afterward that he's keeping an eye on.
"Then we take that back, have our interview, and one of the things I'm always looking for at the end of the interview is, does the person doing the interview want to take that empty cup back to the kitchen?" Innes said.
Unfortunately, those who have the right skills for the job but leave their dirty mug at the scene of the interview probably won't hear back from the hiring manager. Innes thinks it's a red flag that they're not the right culture fit for the company.
"You can develop skills, you can gain knowledge and experience, but it really does come down to attitude, and the attitude that we talk a lot about is the concept of 'wash your coffee cup,'" the boss added.
Taking your used cup, mug or glass back to the kitchen highlights that you're a team player, considerate, and care about the small things.
It's not what you know, or even who you know—countless CEOs have highlighted that success hinges on attitude. Like Innes, Andy Jassy has said that an 'embarrassing amount of how well you do, particularly in your twenties' depends on it.
'I think people would be surprised how infrequently people have great attitudes,' the Amazon CEO revealed. 'I think it makes a big difference.'
Likewise, the CEOs of Pret and Kurt Geiger have both stressed that being nice to their boss and coworkers was one of the biggest determining factors in their success.
'You cannot teach positive attitudes and engagement and energy,' Cisco's U.K. CEO Sarah Walker echoed recently in Fortune.
That's the No. 1 green-flag trait she keeps an eye out for when hiring or looking to promote from within—and she said it outweighs what's on your resume, especially early in your career.
'It's more about the person first and foremost than it is about skills or experience,' she added.
If you want to test for attitude over aptitude, you'd be happy to learn that the coffee cup test actually works.
Lewis Maleh, CEO of the global executive recruitment agency Bentley Lewis, says it's one of many subtle tests he's seen in his 20 years of recruiting experience—'and I think there's some real value to it.'
'I've found that these little behavioral observations can tell you so much about a person that you'd never catch in a formal Q&A,' he says, adding that employers could also watch how interviewees treat reception staff for similar intel.
'So much of hiring is about culture and fit and I think this is an important part of assessing whether someone would suit your organization.'
But he wouldn't pin entire hiring decisions on such tests.
'I see it more as one piece,' he adds. 'Go for it, but keep it in perspective. Not every great candidate will think to clear their cup, especially if they're nervous or unfamiliar with your office. Some might even come from work cultures where this wasn't expected.'
After offering to help an assistant clean up coffee cups people had left behind from a prior meeting, Saira Demmer says she landed a role at SF Recruitment. In the four years since, she's been promoted to CEO.
'It was between me and another candidate,' Demmer recalls. "I insisted on helping, and she fed back to the 2 MDs making the decision that she strongly felt I was the better fit for that reason.'
'I don't personally put people through this test, but I do think it's a good one because it's a real-life test of EQ, teamwork, and understanding of the environment around you,' she adds.
'These skills are critical to success and a very good guide as to how likely someone is to have a positive impact on others or not. Culture is such a huge driver of business success that I would applaud any leader who takes the level of care to consistently look for these kinds of details.'

Weiner wars — Employee at popular meat company steals its secret recipe and then goes to work for competitor

So that's how the sausage is made. A former employee at Hormel Foods, a Fortune 500 packaged meat company, left with top-secret sausage recipes and market information — and then joined its regional competitor Johnsonville, a new federal lawsuit alleges. The stew started after longtime Hormel employee Brett Sims landed the role of Johnsonville's chief supply chain officer in June 2023, and then allegedly began poaching Hormel employees to also join the staff at the sausage company, based in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, which was in violation of his non-solicitation agreement. Sims brought in his former Hormel co-worker Jeremy Rummel this spring, who left Hormel after 25 years, as per The Star Tribune. Before he broke the news to Hormel that he was about to work for its competitor, Rummel allegedly sent 'product formulas, processing procedures, acquisition-target information and marketing-strategy information' to his personal email address. Hormel Foods was founded 130 years ago. Getty Images 'Rummel was attempting to take Hormel's confidential business information and trade secrets to Johnsonville for the express purpose of exploiting the information for Johnsonville's benefit and to Hormel's detriment,' the suit said. After Hormel confronted Rummel, he fessed up to emailing himself the confidential information and then promptly headed to Sims' house 'with the intent to share the details of his interview with Hormel and develop a plan to protect his new role at Johnsonville,' according to the lawsuit. Hormel is behind brands like Spam, Skippy and Planters. SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Hormel, which was founded 130 years ago and is also behind brands like Skippy, Spam and Planters, is accusing Johnsonville and the two ex-employees of conspiring to 'unlawfully obtain Hormel's trade secrets.' 'The sausage market is increasingly competitive, and improper use of confidential, proprietary and trade-secret information, or wrongful competition or solicitation, could cause a manufacturer significant competitive economic disadvantage,' the suit continued. To make matters worse, when Johnsonville was sent a letter from Hormel 'outlining Sims' and Rummel's violations of their agreements, detailing their unlawful behavior and asking for a number of assurances,' the company did not cooperate, the suit claims. Sims and Rummel did not immediately respond to the Star Tribune's email, nor did an attorney named in the lawsuit.

To mark this new milestone in its network expansion, Hong Kong Airlines held celebratory events at both Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Sydney Airport (SYD). Prior to departure, a launch ceremony was held at the boarding gate of the HKIA. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Mr Jeff Sun, President of Hong Kong Airlines; Mr Ian McGraw from the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong; Ms Carmen Tam and Ms Vivien Yuen from Tourism Australia; Ms Jennifer Tung from Destination New South Wales; and Mr Ricky Chong from Airport Authority Hong Kong. Sydney is not only a popular destination for leisure and business travel but also one of Australia's most vital economic hubs. The expansion of the bilateral traffic rights agreement allows us to offer more choice to travellers in both cities, strengthening the connection between them." He added, "While Hong Kong Airlines may be a younger brand in the mature Australian market, we are endeavouring in our commitment to providing quality service. We operate this route with our Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring comfortable business and economy class cabins, and strive to deliver a passenger-centric in-flight experience through attentive service and fine dining for our long-haul customers." Sydney Airport CEO Mr Scott Charlton said: "We're proud to welcome Hong Kong Airlines to Sydney as our 52nd airline partner with its strong reputation for service excellence, efficiency and value. This inaugural service comes on the back of the first expansion in bilateral air traffic rights between Australia and Hong Kong in 19 years and we thank the Albanese Federal Government for its role in enabling this important agreement, which reflects the strength of our longstanding cultural and economic ties." NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper, said: "Hong Kong is a priority international market for NSW, with incoming travellers contributing substantially to the NSW visitor economy. The Minns Labor Government has made it very clear; we want to grow our visitor economy and the best way to do this is by increasing airline capacity and unlocking new international markets for NSW. We've set our sights on increasing the state's aviation capacity by 8.5 million seats, and this new Hong Kong route will complement other new routes we're securing as we work towards landing this goal." Mr Wang Yu, Consul General of People's Republic of China (Sydney), said: "As the second Hong Kong-based airline to operate the Hong Kong–Sydney route, Hong Kong Airlines not only provides a convenient new option for traveling between China and Australia, but also contributes to enhanced exchanges among students, tourists, business professionals and friends from all walks of life. This new service will strengthen Hong Kong and Sydney's role as vital gateways for the flow of people and goods, injecting fresh momentum into the economic and cultural ties between China and Australia. Its launch will also attract more international travelers to transit through Hong Kong or Sydney, further strengthening both cities' positions as global aviation hubs and creating new opportunities for trade and investment. Looking ahead, the Consulate-General of China in Sydney will continue to encourage and support airlines from both China and Australia in restoring or launching new routes based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. We believe that Hong Kong Airlines will continuously enhance its service quality and showcase a good corporate image." Also in attendance at the Sydney welcome ceremony were representatives from the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Sydney, Destination NSW and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Sydney). This further underscores Hong Kong Airlines' commitment and contribution to the aviation industry's recovery and long-term development. In addition to the new routes, the Company also increased the frequency of services on multiple routes to cater to the summer travel demand. This includes the resumption of seasonal flights to the Maldives and an increase in flights to Da Nang to two per day. Additionally, flights to Shanghai Pudong will be increased to four per day, while services to Hangzhou and Nanjing will become twice day. Meet the Gen Z HENRYs: They're making $565K on average but still renting

Earning six figures but living paycheck to paycheck — that's what it means to be a HENRY. As Gen Zers approach 30, a very small subset of the generation is aging into this acronym, which stands for high earners, not rich yet, and was coined by Fortune's Shawn Tully. With inflation biting extra hard during their young adult years, younger Americans increasingly think they need to earn more to achieve stability. In a 2024 Bankrate survey, Gen Zers said they'd need to make $200,000 a year to feel financially secure. At the same time, Gen Zers deal with " money dysmorphia," or an unrealistic perception of their own financial soundness and feeling stressed over money, largely due to social comparison and outdated ideas of what's affordable. Indeed, middle-income Americans have been living more like their lower-income counterparts, indicating that for Americans to feel middle-class, they actually need to be high-earning. To figure out who in Gen Z is actually earning above that threshold — and may exemplify the HENRY title — we delved into Census Bureau microdata from the Current Population Survey's 2024 Annual Social and Economic Supplement. We only looked at adult Gen Zers with a total income of $250,000 or more. Though Gen Z birth years span from 1997 to 2012, we only looked at those ages 18 to 27 in 2024. On average, these Gen Z HENRYs made just above $565,000 a year, compared to around $28,700 for all Gen Zers reflected in the microdata. They also skewed slightly more male than the wider Gen Z cohort. On average, Gen Z HENRYs were around 24 years old in 2024. They were also more likely to be married than their wider Gen Z cohort, and those marriages seem to be sticking so far — essentially 0% of Gen Z HENRYs were separated or divorced. Demographically, Gen Z HENRYs were also less likely to be white than their cohort peers, and more likely to be Asian or Pacific Islander. Gen Z HENRYs were also more likely to have a bachelor's degree or a master's degree and beyond, both of which can contribute to a wage premium. And HENRYs might have the entrepreneurial bug: They're more likely than the rest of Gen Z to be self-employed, although the vast majority held wage or salary roles in the private sector. Gen Z HENRYs were less likely to be homeowners than the wider Gen Z cohort, with 40% of HENRYs owning homes compared to around 53% of all Gen Zers. Conversely, HENRYs were more likely to be renters. However, homeowning HENRYs were more likely to live in more valuable properties — their estimated current property values were around $455,000 compared to around $441,000 for all of Gen Z. That tracks with a larger trend: Some high-earning Americans, especially younger ones, are opting for rent — it's increasingly become a better deal than maintaining and buying a home for many, and many higher-earners like the flexibility and amenities that come with a rental.
