TN aims to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, highlights SDG vision report
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu's Vision for Sustainable Development Goals, a report submitted by the state planning commission, aims at eliminating extreme poverty and reduce the population below the poverty line in TN to zero by 2030.
'The major interventions of the state are employment generation schemes, housing facilities at an affordable cost, provision of health care, education, drinking water supply, sanitation and a good road network. TN is the first to introduce mid-day meals in schools which helped improve enrolment, reduce drop-outs and address poverty,' the 634-page report submitted to Chief Minister MK Stalin said.
The document highlights the present status and outlines strategies and action plan of the state and its interventions to achieve 17 SDGs through numerous welfare schemes and policies.

3,634 differently-abled persons to be nominated to local bodies soon: CM MK Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday announced that a total of 3,634 persons with disabilities will be nominated to local bodies immediately, for which the application process will commence at the district level on July 1. Addressing the felicitation event organised by different organisations of PwDs at the renovated Valluvar Kottam to thank the CM for the representation provided to disabled people in local bodies, he said this will include 650 persons to urban local bodies and 2,984 persons to rural local bodies. It was the first event to be organised at the Valluvar Kottam, after it was renovated at a cost of Rs 80 crore, which included a conference hall with a seating capacity of around 1,400 persons. During the budget session of the Assembly in April, suitable legislative amendments were passed to enable the representation of 13,357 PwDs to all levels of local bodies through local bodies. Before coming on stage, Stalin visited the renovated campus, including the landmark chariot structure that was beautified with lights. Speaking to a packed crowd of PwDs, the CM said, 'A committee has been formed with district collector as head. A PwD will also be a member of the committee. Those who are nominated can take part in the local body meetings. Similar to the elected representative, nominated PwD will also be given honorarium.' Regarding the renovation of Valluvar Kottam, Stalin said, 'Kalaignar laid foundation stone for this 'cultural treasure' in 1974. AIADMK generally abandon the projects of DMK. They would not maintain the buildings, memorials built by us. Similarly this Valluvar Kottam, which was left without maintenance, has been renovated with renewed splendour.' He also appealed to the associations for PwDs to work jointly with the government and said all should grow as an inclusive society.

The language row that has resurfaced in South India is indeed an unfortunate development. It is a common phenomenon that all political parties indulge in and instigate voters' temperament during election time to derive political mileage. Generally political exploitation of voters is taken for granted on issues like regionalism, language and religion. The people of Tamil Nadu are in the forefront of using such issues. Tamil leaders have raked up the language controversy a few months prior to the Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for next year. Kamal Haasan has blatantly issued a statement contending that Tamil is the mother of all Dravidian languages and Kannada was born out of it. Chief Minister MK Stalin is bound to use the language controversy generated by Kamal Haasan for political gains. Kamal's statement has led to the boycott of screening his film "Thug Life" in Karnataka, which was eventually set right by the courts. The political party floated by Kamal Haasan has flunked miserably, while for political convenience the DMK party has befriended him and rewarded with a ticket to the Rajya Sabha. One should not forget that DMK engineered anti-Hindi agitation to ride to power in 1967. Quite ironically, now the DMK leaders are maintaining stoic silence on "Thug Life". The language blockade between Tamil and Kannada is a new twist to the already existing Kaveri water dispute and other border issues. People need to be vigilant against those creating controversies that are propped up by political parties. Kamal Haasan, who is responsible for the language controversy, must apologise to Kannadigas and create a friendly atmosphere among different language speaking people in the south. Disabled can apply to local bodies from July 1: Stalin
Chennai: Applications to appoint people with disabilities (PwD) in urban and rural local bodies across the state will be received from July 1, chief minister M K Stalin said on Saturday. After inaugurating the revamped Valluvar Kottam, he said: "We have legislated a social justice right, ensuring that a disabled member will have a place in local bodies. Through this, 13,357 individuals will be appointed as members. Immediately, 650 in urban and 2,984 in rural local bodies will be appointed." A committee led by the collector — including a representative from the district-level disabled group — will oversee the selection. A thanksgiving ceremony was organised by the disabled coordination committee in appreciation of the govt's decision. Recalling his father and former chief minister M Karunanidhi's admiration for Thiruvalluvar and the Thirukkural, he said, "Among the many tributes to Valluvar, the creation of Valluvar Kottam in 1974 stands out. We have now restored this artistic treasure at a cost of 80 crore ..."
