Reborn Citroën 2CV part of plan for 'daring and shocking' models
Autocar revealed earlier this year that design work on a 2CV-inspired model had begun
Citroën will leverage the history and heritage of the brand – and the 2CV in particular – with future models, boss Thierry Koskas has confirmed.
Autocar revealed earlier this year that design work on a model inspired by the original 2CV had begun.
Asked if Citroën made enough of its history, Koskas said the brand has "one of the richest histories in the world" and in France the original Citroën DS and Citroën 2CV are always named as one and two when people are asked for their favourite cars from history.
"The brand has an incredible history and I think it still appeals to a lot of people," said Koskas. "When you travel everywhere in the world, people know the 2CV.
"We want to use this heritage. We will do it in a way that we will see [in the future]. But yes, we want to leverage that."
Koskas said the future Citroën range will be built around four pillars: the C3, C3 Aircross, C4 and C5 Aircross. But the firm will launch additional models as part of a plan to be "daring and shocking".
"There are different ways to express that, through our products and how we communicate," he said. "We have started to be daring again in how we communicate.
"But in the future, we need some iconic models that will surprise, either through their design, their features, or whatever.
"This is very much what Citroën knows how to do, and I think that we really need to do that again as it will have a halo effect on the other models. We need the four pillars for the volume and growth of the brand, but we also need some icons."
Koskas confirmed that the brand will continue to make physical concept cars to showcase proposed new models and ideas, and later this year there will be a "new concept that will give direction on how we understand the notion of comfort and space management".
While this is understood to not directly preview a new model, including a reborn 2CV, Koskas said Citroën "needs to move to series cars" for creating new concepts and ideas as "we do not want to have icons only in concepts that nobody will buy. We want to have real icons that customers will buy".
After the imminent introduction of the new C3 and C3 Aircross models and a facelift for the C4, the C5 Aircross will be launched later this year as the last of Citroën's four pillar models.
Koskas said this will be the ceiling for the brand in terms of the size of cars it offers. There is also still no plan for Citroën to re-enter the city car segment with a C1 or C2 model due to "very challenging" issues about making such cars affordable. But Koskas believes Citroën "already addresses the smaller car segment" with the affordability of its new C3.
"We have no intention to go any smaller," he said. "I'm quite happy to be focused on the B- and C-segment. This is my playground. "

Stellantis expands stop-drive action for Citroën C3 and DS3 in Europe
Stellantis has enforced an immediate stop-drive action across Europe for specific models of Citroën C3 and DS3 vehicles, citing concerns over Takata airbags. The affected vehicles, produced between 2009 and 2019, are part of an extensive recall campaign that began over a year ago. Owners are urged to halt driving their cars and contact dealers for a complimentary repair. The stop-drive action includes vehicles that were already subject to a recall campaign, initially in Southern Europe and later in the northern regions. Decisions for such actions consider factors like airbag specifications, vehicle age, climate, and regulatory authority alerts. Following a recent incident in France, Stellantis has broadened its efforts, reinforcing its dedication to customer safety. Stellantis is contacting customers with additional information on the stop-drive order. Owners are encouraged to use the VIN check tool on the Citroën website, reach out to local dealers, or call the customer service hotline to determine if their vehicle is affected. It's crucial for owners who have moved or changed contact details to update their information for effective communication. The company is utilising its entire network, including suppliers, dealerships, and manufacturing sites, to facilitate this action and provide the safest and most convenient solution for customers. Stellantis's commitment to rapid, transparent, and responsible action on this issue remains steadfast. Last month, Stellantis appointed Antonio Filosa as CEO, succeeding Carlos Tavares who resigned in December 2024 amid US market challenges. Future VW Golf R EV Could Use Radical In-Wheel Motors
Volkswagen is said to be working on a hot version of the ID 2 small hatchback, likely to be known as the ID 2 R. While VW doesn't sell a hatchback smaller than the Golf in the United States, the ID 2 R could pave the way for the future all-electric Golf R, and VW seems to have come up with a clever way of integrating electric motors. These plans were revealed by Autocar, with its sources suggesting the ID 2 R will use electric hub motors situated in the rear wheels. As we'll see, this layout has multiple benefits. VW is already expected to debut the electric in 2026, but the new ID 2 R will be a lot more advanced. In addition to the front-mounted electric motor in the GTI, the R model will get independently controlled motors within the rear wheels, dramatically increasing performance and enabling all-wheel drive, which has traditionally been associated with the Golf R. By not going the more conventional dual-motor route, VW will be able to save weight and reduce the impact on trunk space, both important considerations in a compact car. Whereas the ID 2 GTI will make around 286 horsepower, a more likely output in the three-motor ID 2 R will be about 400 hp. This, together with the torque vectoring made possible by the hub motors, should make for a shockingly quick and agile hot hatch. Even more performance could be extracted from the larger Golf R EV with the same setup. While hub motors have many advantages, they can also increase unsprung mass - the weight of the components not supported by the suspension - which can negatively impact handling and grip. On the upside, the ID 2 R's tech has the potential to filter through to other small VWs with all-wheel drive. It would also allow cars with FWD, RWD, and AWD to be more easily built on the same platform, reducing costs and complexity. For now, the Golf R will soldier on as a potent ICE hatchback with its 328-hp turbo engine, snappy dual-clutch transmission, and dependable AWD system. But the potential of an electric successor looks bright - don't expect it to arrive much earlier than 2029 or 2030, though, especially with multiple brands backtracking on their EV plans. Audi Will Make a V8 Hybrid RS6 Now Instead of Going EV Only: Report
The latest car news, reviews, and features. In just a few short days, Audi has seemingly gone from eliminating internal combustion engines from its global lineup, to giving one of its most beloved, gas-burning performance icons a new lease on life. The upcoming RS6 may not exclusively be offered with an electric powertrain, as we previously understood. It will instead be accompanied by a V8 model, incorporating an updated version of the existing 4.0-liter mill in a plug-in hybrid system, per Autocar . You can chalk up this reported change in heart to the same rationale that's led Ferrari to delay its first series production EV, and Ford to invest in new hybrids rather than successors to existing battery-electric models. This is all about demand. This news also arrives during a time of mounting pressure from member nations, chiefly Germany, to overturn the European Union's 2035 engine ban. When asked for comment on Autocar's report about a new V8 hybrid RS6, an Audi spokesperson didn't deny the claim and responded to The Drive with the following statement: 'We always said that 2033 was a target date and that we have the ability to adjust with all-new EV and ICE architectures. We continued to invest in new EV and ICE models and just launched some of our key models. We introduced the Q6 e-tron end of 2024 and just launched the Q5, the A5 and the A6 e-tron with more to come including RS models.' The existing RS6 Avant. Love those wheels. Audi The rumored hybrid powertrain would place the new RS6 on equal footing with the BMW M5, as big, V8-propelled Autobahn chargers with support from electric motors. But Audi is said to match BMW's strategy in another way: The next-generation RS6 will reportedly be available as both a wagon and a sedan, something Audi hasn't done in 15 years, Autocar adds. The technology for Audi to realize a plug-in hybrid RS6 already exists within the Volkswagen realm, thanks to Porsche. The E-Hybrid system used in the Cayenne and Panamera, for example, could inform how Audi executes the gas-burning RS6. It will obviously come at a weight penalty—there's just no getting around that—but electrification will be necessary for Audi to deliver an RS-caliber experience while keeping in line with Euro 7 emissions regulations. As for the RS6 E-Tron, it's purported to run a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, with power figures landing around 670 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, according to the publication. Given how so many automakers have taken a modular approach to future vehicle platforms, there's no reason Audi and others shouldn't be able to meet enthusiasts where they are, whether they demand a V8 or all-electric performance.
