Japan begins mandatory TB screening for visitors staying over 3-months

TOKYO: Japan on Monday introduced mandatory pre-arrival tuberculosis (TB) screening for foreign nationals planning to stay in the country for more than three months, starting with those from the Philippines and Nepal, a government official said. Kyodo News Agency reported that Vietnam is expected to be added to the list in September, followed by Indonesia, Myanmar and China. The number of foreign nationals diagnosed with the infectious disease while in Japan has been rising, with most cases involving individuals from the six countries, according to the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry. The screening requirement will initially apply to citizens who normally reside in the Philippines and Nepal and plan to stay in Japan on a mid- to long-term basis. Travellers will be required to provide proof that they are not infected with TB before arrival or risk being denied entry. While TB is both curable and preventable, it killed an estimated 1.25 million people in 2023 and is likely to have regained its position as the world's deadliest infectious disease after briefly being overtaken by COVID-19, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). In Japan, the number of TB cases fell below 10 per 100,000 people for the first time in 2021, reaching 9.2 and placing the country in the WHO's low-incidence category. The rate declined further to 8.1 in 2023, according to the latest data from the health ministry. — BERNAMA

Elderly couple fulfil dream to perform haj

Hassan and his wife Rohaya. THIS year has been special for an elderly couple from Johor Baru who got the chance to perform the haj after a 14-year wait. Retiree Hassan Abdul Hamid, 76, said he was grateful that his dream of visiting the Holy Land came true. 'I received a call informing me that I had been chosen to perform the haj about a week before the fasting month. 'I was overjoyed, and so was my family when I told them the news,' he said to the media during the send-off ceremony for haj pilgrims at Senai International Airport. The former Johor Baru City Council mechanic was among the 3,800 pilgrims who departed for Kuala Lumpur en route to Mecca. They were sent off by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid and state youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah. 'In 2020, I was placed in an induced coma at the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Aminah after contracting Covid-19. 'Everyone thought I would not survive, but miraculously, I recovered,' said the mother of eight and grandmother of 23. 'I am grateful to have been given a second chance at life, and now, to be able to perform the haj.' Rohaya, who manages funeral rites at a mosque in Johor Baru, said her journey was sponsored by an anonymous donor. 'My husband was the one who received the offer from Tabung Haji, but he asked for me to accompany him as he suffers from asthma, and a donor stepped in.' In his speech, Onn Hafiz said, 'I believe under the guidance of Tabung Haji, state government and Johor Islamic Religious Council, our pilgrims have been well prepared to fulfil their religious duties. 'Take this opportunity to perform your haj with sincerity. I also ask that you pray for the well-being and future of our state,' he said. Onn Hafiz also reminded pilgrims to pray for the state's continued peace and prosperity during their time in the Holy Land. Meanwhile, Mohd Fared said the 3,800 Johor residents performing the haj included 500 pilgrims under state government sponsorship. He said the number was the same allocated to the state in recent years. 'However, the state government will continue working closely with Tabung Haji to apply for an increased quota,' he said.

Chinese medical team provides free healthcare to children in Botswana

GABORONE, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The 17th batch of the Chinese medical team in Botswana on Sunday conducted a free medical outreach service and made donations at the SOS Children's Village in Tlokweng, located on the outskirts of Gaborone, the capital of the southern African country. In a speech at the event, Motshwari Kitso, national director of SOS Children's Villages Botswana, expressed deep appreciation for the support the organization has received from the Chinese Embassy in Botswana and the Chinese community over the years. SOS Children's Villages Botswana, a nongovernmental organization that supports children and young people without parental care or at risk of losing it, operates three centers in Tlokweng village of South-East District, Francistown city of North-East District, and Serowe town of Central District. Currently, the organization cares for about 320 children at its three centers and supports an additional 1,500 children in the communities, Kitso said, expecting more medical outreach services in the future at the other two centers and in the surrounding communities. Community leader Lazarus Ikalafeng welcomed the arrival of the Chinese medical team and their outreach service, which encourages people to prioritize their health by coming forward to see a doctor. "The Chinese medical team has always been paying close attention to the health of children in Botswana," said Fan Wandong, head of the Chinese medical team. He noted that through the medical outreach, the Chinese team would apply their medical expertise and clinical experience to promote the well-being of children, ensuring that their childhoods are filled with laughter rather than illness. In addition to medical checkups, Chinese doctors educated the children on proper hygiene practices, including handwashing and preventing the spread of contagious germs. The event was attended by Cui Yin, counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Botswana, and featured donations from the embassy, the Chinese medical team, and the Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana, among others. Donations included hygiene and disinfection supplies, essential medicines, school supplies, drinking water, daily necessities, food, and sports equipment.
