Spike Lee's ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Rocks Cannes With Star-Studded Premiere, Warm Reception After Surprise Honor for Denzel Washington
Spike Lee and Denzel Washington helped make Cannes mo' better Monday night with the gala premiere of Highest 2 Lowest.
Washington, currently playing Othello in a 15-week run on Broadway, flew to France for the evening premiere, his first collaboration with Lee since 2006's Inside Man. It was a short visit. Washington will be back on stage in New York on Tuesday. He was joined on the Cannes red carpet by Highest 2 Lowest co-stars Ilfenesh Hadera, Wendell Pierce, Jeffrey Wright, Aubrey Joseph and rapper A$AP Rocky.

The premiere also brought out A-listers not associated with the film, with Jason Momoa, Luke Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Ed Norton, Isabelle Huppert and Mathieu Kassovitz spotted on the red carpet, as well as Wes Anderson, less than 24 hours after he walked the famous Cannes steps for The Phoenician Scheme. Even the former French first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, made an appearance. Additionally, Rocky's partner Rihanna attended, heavily pregnant in a blue dress.
The always snazzy Lee was outfitted in a bright orange and blue stripped zoot suit (the colors of his beloved New York Knicks) with matching hat and glasses.
Instead of posing for selfies, Washington went down the line of fans camped out across from the red carpet, shaking every hand he could find.
Prior to the screening, Washington was surprised with an honorary Palme d'Or, a career achievement acknowledgement that had been presented only 21 previous times.
After the screening, the film received warm applause, with whoops and cheers for Lee, Rocky and the rest of the cast. Not for Washington, though, who had to leave early to catch his flight back to the U.S. Thanking the crowd, Lee recalled his history with Cannes, bringing his first film, She's Gotta Have It and his masterpiece Do The Right Thing to the Croisette. 'And it is Malcolm X's 100th birthday today, so give it up for Malcolm!,' Lee concluded, before a final shout-out for his true love: 'Go Knicks!'
Highest 2 Lowest is a 'reinterpretation,' per Lee's own words, of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 police procedural High and Low. Washington plays a music mogul who becomes the target of a ransom demand that forces him into a moral dilemma, forced to choose between life and death.
The Apple Original feature is screening out of competition in Cannes. A24 will release Highest 2 Lowest theatrically in the U.S. on Aug. 22.
The momentum for Highest 2 Lowest had been building since Sunday, when Lee and his team took over Hyde Beach by Campari for an early evening fête co-hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Threads. THR's Cannes issue, featuring Lee on the cover in striking yellow-and-black spectacles, was omnipresent at the event, alongside Campari cocktails and a guest list that included Guillaume Thevenin, Diamant Blazi, Paola Locatelli, Mateo Sinet, SCAD Savannah Film Festival artistic director Christina Routhier, power publicist Steven Wilson, UCLA professor Teri Schwartz, indie titans John and Janet Pierson, THR India chief Anupama Chopra, producer Diana Alvarez and Netflix's Albert Tello and other boldfaced names.

Lynn Hamilton, ‘Sanford and Son' and ‘The Waltons' Actress, Dies at 95
Lynn Hamilton, who played Redd Foxx's girlfriend Donna on 'Sandford and Son' and Miss Verdie on 'The Waltons,' died Thursday of natural causes at her home in Chicago. She was 95. Hamilton also played Vivian Potter on 'Generations' from 1989 to 1991. Her additional credits included 'Designing Women,' 'Roots: The Next Generation,' '227' and 'The Practice.' Hamilton's first appearance on 'Sandford and Son' was in 1972 when she played a landlady who chastised Demond Wilson's Lamont Sanford after he argued with his father, Fred Sanford, and then got his own place. Producers of the series decided to upgrade the role, and Hamilton became Fred's girlfriend. Alzenia Lynn Hamilton was born April 25, 1930, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. She and her family moved to Chicago when Hamilton was young, and she first began acting with a South Side theater company. A 1956 move to New York City opened up opportunities and Hamilton was in four Broadway plays. She joined the Seattle Repertory Theatre in 1966 before moving to Los Angeles. Hamilton was married to Frank Jenkins from 1964 until his death in 2014. The Hollywood Reporter first reported news of her death. Jack Betts, the character actor who appeared in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) and over a dozen Spaghetti Western films, has died at the age of 96. Per The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, Betts died Thursday in his sleep at his Los Osos, Calif. home, his nephew, Dean Sullivan, said. Anthony Ramos calls out Madonna for being on iPad 'the whole time' during one of his 'Hamilton' performances
Anthony Ramos did not throw away his shot. The 33-year-old former Hamilton star recently recalled Madonna giving him quite the fright when he spotted her in the audience during one of his performances of the acclaimed show on stage. "The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face," Ramos said during his Thursday appearance on Watch What Happens Live while host Andy Cohen peppered him with a string of "scary questions." "She was like this the whole time," Ramos continued, mimicking someone staring down at an iPad. "I'm like, 'Damn, shorty, if you're not enjoying it that much, the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here.'" Ramos was part of the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning Broadway musical, playing the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton from July 2015 until November 2016. After leaving Hamilton, Ramos took on the lead role in the film adaptation of In the Heights, Miranda's breakout 2008 Broadway hit, which also earned widespread critical praise. Ramos continued building his career, nabbing a starring turn in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 2024's Twisters, and several other TV and movie projects. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton reunited on June 8 during the 78th Annual Tony Awards to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Since its Broadway debut in 2015, the show, inspired by the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, has become a cultural phenomenon, shattering box office records and earning a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations and winning 11 trophies, including Best Musical. Ramos did not say when Madonna attended the Hamilton performance. However, in 2015, Playbill reported that creator and star Miranda banned Madonna from visiting the cast backstage after an April 18 performance of the show when it was still Off Broadway due to her poor theater etiquette. In a now-deleted tweet, the Pulitzer Prize–winning lyricist wrote, "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou."
