Iraq frees Australian engineer after four years, but keeps travel ban

BAGHDAD: Iraq has released an Australian mechanical engineer on bail who was detained for more than four years over a dispute with the central bank, authorities said Friday, though he remains barred from leaving the country.
Robert Pether was working for an engineering company contracted to oversee the construction of the bank's new Baghdad headquarters, according to a United Nations report, when he was arrested in April 2021 alongside his Egyptian deputy Khalid Radwan.
A report from a working group for the UN Human Rights Council said the arrests stemmed from a contractual dispute over "alleged failure to execute certain payments".
Both men were sentenced to five years in prison and fined $12 million, the working group said.
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Pether, in his fifties, was released "due to his poor health".
Australian media have previously reported that the family suspected Pether had developed lung cancer in prison and that he had undergone surgery for skin cancer.
The official declined to comment on the fate of Radwan.
Australia's ABC broadcaster quoted the country's foreign minister, Penny Wong, as welcoming the release and saying the Australian government had raised the issue with Iraqi authorities more than 200 times.
Simon Harris, foreign minister for Ireland, where Pether's family lives, posted on X: "This evening, I have been informed of the release on bail of Robert Pether, whose imprisonment in Iraq has been a case of great concern.
"This is very welcome news in what has been a long and distressing saga for Robert's wife, three children and his wider family and friends."
Speaking to Irish national broadcaster RTE, Pether's wife, Desree Pether, said her husband was "not well at all" and "really needs to just come home so he can get the proper medical care he needs".
"He's completely unrecognisable. It's a shock to the system to see how far he has declined," she said.

Man arrested for stabbing youth who tried to stop harassment in Delhi's Khajuri Khas
New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a local resident who intervened to stop him from harassing a girl in Delhi's Khajuri Khas area, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon. Police received a call about a stabbing in the area. According to officials, a local youth stepped in after he saw a girl being harassed by the accused. In retaliation, the accused allegedly stabbed the youth and fled the spot. The accused, identified as Chaman, son of Guddu and a resident of E-Block, Sri Ram Colony, was later traced and arrested. A case was registered under Sections 109(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the stabbing. Subsequently, based on the girl's complaint, a second case was registered under Section 74 of the BNS and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as one of the complainants was found to be a minor. Police said further investigation is underway in both cases. Earlier, on June 5, two juveniles were apprehended in connection with the stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy in Delhi's Anand Parbat area, police said. On June 2, police received information about a grievously injured and unconscious boy lying near Durga Mandir in Taliwalan Basti. A police team reached the spot immediately. As per the statement, an eyewitness informed the police that while he was returning home with the victim, two unidentified boys approached from behind and stabbed the 16-year-old before fleeing. The victim was rushed to RML Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said. Following the incident, an FIR (No. 275/25) was registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code at Police Station Anand Parbat, and the investigation began. According to DCP Nidhin Valsan's statement, the police team analysed CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and developed local intelligence. On June 5, based on credible secret information, two juveniles were apprehended. During questioning, the juveniles admitted to their involvement in the incident, as per the police. KTR showcases Telangana's transformative journey at Oxford India Forum in UK
London [United Kingdom], June 21 (ANI): Former Minister and BRS Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) delivered a powerful and inspiring talk at the prestigious Oxford India Forum held at Oxford University, highlighting Telangana's exceptional growth story since its formation. Speaking on the theme 'Governing Innovation - A Telangana Case Study', KTR articulated how India's youngest state has emerged as a beacon of inclusive development, resilience, and economic transformation. In his address, KTR emphasised that Telangana was not created by chance but was the result of decades of peaceful democratic struggle. He referred to it as 'the most successful startup state of independent India' and proudly stated that Telangana has shown not only promise but also consistent delivery of development goals across sectors. He underscored that the formation of the state in 2014 was the culmination of decades of aspiration, and in just a short span, it has transformed into a model state admired across India and globally. KTR highlighted the impressive economic indicators that back Telangana's growth story. The state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has grown from Rs 4 lakh crore to Rs 15 lakh crore, and its per capita income has surged from Rs 1.12 lakh to Rs 3.57 lakh. Telangana has risen from the 12th position in the national economic rankings to among the top in multiple sectors, including agriculture, industry, and technology. Speaking of agriculture, he highlighted the landmark initiative of directly depositing $9 billion into the accounts of 70 lakh farmers under the Rythu Bandhu scheme, the largest of its kind in the world. He described this as a conscious choice to empower farmers with financial autonomy, leading to a phenomenal rise in agricultural output, including a jump in paddy production from 68 lakh metric tons to 3 crore tons in under a decade. During the fireside chat that followed, KTR responded to questions about his personal journey and political choices. He recounted how he left a promising career in the US to support the Telangana statehood movement led by KCR.
