Five key players for the Sharks in their first-ever home URC quarter-final
Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi scored nine points off the kicking tee in his previous clash, but the Sharks will hope their fullback is at his attacking best in the URC quarter-final against Munster on Saturday.

The Sharks will play their first-ever home quarter-final in the United Rugby Championship (URC) this weekend, and facing former champions Munster will be a big occasion for the home side.
With a spot in the semis up for grabs, the Durbanites will need a team performance at Kings Park to shut out Munster, who have found a nick for winning play-off games away from home. Independent Newspapers looks at five Sharks players who must lead the side's quest to the top four.

He said this week his body feels rested for the play-offs which is an unusual thing considering the long season, but he will want to make up for lost time after his spell on the sidelines when the team forged on in his absence.
Etzebeth's physicality will be key for the side if they look to get over the advantage line with some big carries. Equally, he will have to light the fire on defence and at ruck time to halt the cunningness of the Irish at the breakdowns.
They will look to get under his skin with off-the-ball stuff and that is where his leadership qualities will have to come through to avoid getting into the handbags.

The flying fullback is slowly but surely getting back into his stride after his injury layoff, and he was a shining light in their last game at home – a rather dull affair, but nevertheless won through his kicking boot.
There should be fewer kicking responsibilities on the shoulders of Fassi and. hopefully, his attacking prowess can come to the fore. The Sharks owe their supporters an exciting attacking display. But Munster's kicking game could put him under pressure and defending against former teammate Thaakier Abrahams and Calvin Nash, Munster's wingers, could be tricky.

The overall gameplay of the scrumhalf has been under some scrutiny over the last couple of performances, especially with the Sharks struggling to get their attack going in games where they should've had the upper hand.
With his kicking game, there is nothing wrong and it's something that the side can fall back on if they are under pressure. But Durban will want to see some good tries scored on Saturday and how sharp and quick he is at the breakdown area will be important.
Hendrikse owes the team a performance that can take them into the semi-finals and it's about time he delivers behind a strong pack of forwards. Ox Nche
The chief destroyer of the Sharks' scrum will look to feast again against his opponents. He has been at the helm of the powerful scrum the side produces over the season and will look to carry that form into the playoffs.

Bok lock Lood de Jager still happy with his decision to play in Japan
The 32-year-old Springbok said he is very happy to have signed up for five years of rugby in Japan. Springbok lock Lood de Jager is still enjoying playing rugby in Japan after three seasons there, and is excited for the two more seasons on his contract. The 32-year-old said he has developed his game and gained invaluable experience in his time at the Wild Knights, which followed three seasons at Sale Sharks in England. Finances and family He explained that the financial prospect of playing overseas and the well-being of his family were factors in his decision to leave our shores after several successful years at the Cheetahs and Bulls. 'Especially with the wife and kids… If you aren't happy off-field, it really translates to on the field,' De Jager said. 'For me, I am happy with the decisions I made. I always wanted to experience playing in Europe, playing Champions Cup, playing Premiership, testing myself against the best over there. And before that, it's Super Rugby over here. You get to play against the best of Argentina, New Zealand and Australia.' He said the variety of experience had done much for his game and his spirits. That is why he is still open about his future, saying anything could happen in two years and he could stay in Japan, return to SA, or play elsewhere. He said while the standard of rugby has picked up in Japan, with world-class players and coaches pushing a more running-focused game, he would encourage upcoming players enjoying their rugby in South Africa to appreciate the United Rugby Championship as a platform to make a name for themselves. Still, he said it was great being back in the Springbok fold after being out since July 2023 because of injury. 'The easy part was being with good friends again. Seeing them again and being able to train with them, spend day to day in camp. It was great seeing the guys again and talking about old stories.'

Former Wallabies captain: URC ‘not the best thing ever' for SA
Wallabies great Michael Hooper believes South African players are struggling in the Vodacom URC and would love to see the local teams back in Super Rugby. The Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Lions departed the old Sanzaar competition for the inaugural URC in 2021, and despite the challenges the SA teams face when competing in the northern hemisphere, a South African side has contested every final in four seasons of the competition. The Stormers lifted the trophy in 2022 following a narrow win over the Bulls at Cape Town Stadium, before going down to Munster the following season in Mother City. In 2024, Jake White's Bulls lost to Glasgow Warriors at Loftus, and then Leinster in Dublin last week. All Blacks legend Mils Muliaina previously said an American team competing in Super Rugby could help attract South Africans back to the southern hemisphere competition, amid reports that World Rugby is exploring a US-based team to boost interest ahead of the 2031 World Cup in America. Two-time Springbok world champion Frans Steyn, now Cheetahs director of rugby, recently criticised the current scheduling and travel demands for SA teams in the URC and EPCR competitions while insisting local teams should return to Super Rugby. The likes of former Bok and Bulls loose forward Jacques Potgieter played for the Waratahs and speaking on Stan Sport's 'Inside Line', Hooper discussed why more must be done to lure players from the Republic to Super Rugby Pacific. 'I'd love to see that country brought back into Super Rugby.' 'I hear that it's very difficult for South Africa to play in that URC, very difficult for the players; they've got to fly through Doha to get up there. It's tough going for them physically to play up and down there. 'I don't think that the sentiment around it is like, 'this URC thing is the best thing ever'. 'Maybe it's just me being old and now being one of the players remembering the past [but] there's a lot of people talking about, you know, those sort of days. 'It happened back in the day as well, with Jacques Potgieter coming to the Waratahs, you know, guys like that. So I think, how can the competition look juicier for players to come.
