At 52 years old, Mahlatse Lekwadu stands as a beacon of resilience and empowerment in the male-dominated mining and industrial supply sector, proving that limitations can indeed become the foundations of strength. Based in Steelpoort, Limpopo, her enterprise, Magadine Business Enterprise (Pty) Ltd, has flourished over its seven-year journey, demonstrating how a woman living with a neurological disorder can not only overcome significant challenges but also challenge the status quo on inclusivity and representation. Growing up in Bothashoek village and later Burgersfort, Mahlatse's background has shaped her determination. Her early schooling at Madinoge Primary School and Mmiditsi Secondary School laid a foundational belief that education and perseverance can lead to possibilities beyond one's immediate circumstances. 'I don't have a dis-ability—I have a different-ability,' she proudly declares, embodying a narrative that redefines limitations into potentials. The road to entrepreneurship, however, was fraught with obstacles, particularly for a woman entering an industrial sector predominantly seen through the lens of male leadership. Financial constraints made starting the business exceedingly difficult; reliance on loans from family and friends, combined with personal credit, were the pillars upon which her dream began to materialise. For the initial three years, Mahlatse and her team operated out of her garage—a setting that often starkly contrasted the ambitious visions she held for her company. Accessibility, also, posed a significant barrier. Factors such as inadequate infrastructure and the complexities of navigating vendor registration in the mining sector often left Mahlatse feeling disheartened. 'Getting registered as a vendor was a drawn-out process,' she recounts. 'I had to persistently send daily emails until we secured our vendor number.' Yet, through determination and an unyielding spirit, Mahlatse has gained tender opportunities, establishing relationships with industry giants like Glencore Eastern Mine and Lion Smelter. Today, as Magadine Business Enterprise continues to thrive, Mahlatse remains unyielding in her commitment to uplift fellow women and individuals with disabilities. This passion for mentorship and nurturing young talent comes from her aspiration for a better future, especially for her children. 'I take joy in mentoring others and continuously learning from the youth,' she affirms. However, the journey is not without its current challenges. Over 400 schools and 1,400 classrooms damaged in EC floods
The death toll following the devastating floods in Eastern Cape currently stands at 92 and is expected to keeping rising and search and rescue efforts continue. Image: OR Tambo District Municipality MORE than 400 schools and 1400 classrooms have been damaged in the recent floods which devastated large parts of the Eastern Cape. The floods have claimed the lives of 92 people, affecting more than 4 300 people, according to Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane. He said 48341 learners were also affected following the damage in 413 schools. In his keynote address during the provincial day of mourning in Mthatha on Thursday, Mabuyane said significant progress had been made in the restoration of critical infrastructure, particularly water supply systems. Full restoration is anticipated across all affected areas on Friday. Authorities had been criticised by community members for its slow disaster response. Mabuyane said the latest events were a lesson that 'it is no longer enough to react to disasters'. 'There are many lessons we must all learn from this kind of tragedy. However, today I want to highlight the reality of climate change. Therefore, it is no longer enough to react to disasters. We must prepare for them and prevent them where possible,' Mabuyane said. 'Our collective immediate task is to work with families to ensure that the souls we lost in this tragedy are buried with dignity. Any funds dedicated to it will be used prudently to help our people rebuild their lives.' Gift of the Givers said things were much 'calmer' following alleged extortion attempts on their teams distributing water in Mthatha. They called on the community to help find the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident. 'We need that person arrested. This is a message to all the water mafia: that we will take you on wherever you are because Gift of the Givers is not afraid of anyone. We have the support of the government, the SAPS, the SANDF, and above all we have the support of the communities and the municipalities when it comes to assisting people in dire need, as is the case now in Mthatha and the Eastern Cape. Serial rapist sentenced to six life terms
Lungile Buhlungu Image: NPA SERIAL rapist Lungile Buhlungu who was sentenced to six life terms and 50 years direct imprisonment will have to undergo psychological evaluation to determine whether he will benefit from any intervention available for his sexual behaviour. Described by the state as an unrepentant criminal, Buhlungu was convicted on six counts of rape, two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four counts of kidnapping, a count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and a count of illegal possession of a firearm. His five-year reign of terror on his six victims ended in 2019 when he was arrested and linked to the rapes through DNA. The first three women were raped in Delft on the evening of July 11, 2014 after Buhlungu and his accomplice, who were both armed, confronted them. They forced them at gunpoint into the bushes and took turns raping them. At one stage, one of the victims attempted to escape when one of the two men fired a shot in the air. They released them in the early hours of the next day. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the women testified about how negatively the incident had affected them. She was attacked while walking home and woke up in the hospital with a wound on the right side of her head, and her right eye was red. She was found by a motorist lying naked at the local graveyard. Senior State Adv Esna Erasmus led the evidence of Lieutenant Colonel Elmarie Alta Myburgh, an expert on sexual offences investigations, sexual and violence risk assessment, forensic sex crimes investigations, and the assessment and management of stalking. She testified that serial rapists only stop these crimes through arrest and not by themselves. Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Nicolette Bell applauded the victims for coming out and testified against their tormentor, ensuring justice for themselves and their families. CAPE TIMES

Gift of the Givers faces intimidation from 'water mafia' during flood relief efforts

Image: Gift of the Givers Humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, which has been pivotal in assisting those affected by the floods in the Eastern Cape, are being intimidated by 'water mafia'. Speaking to IOL, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder and chairman of Gift of the Givers, said members of the 'water mafia' have been trying to intimidate its drivers while delivering life-saving water to the people of Mthatha who have been severely affected by the recent floods. 'Given the hardships and difficulties of the people and the fact that 90 people have passed on, the behaviour of the water mafia is totally disgusting. We appreciate the fact that the SAPS acted immediately by sending out a convoy (vehicle in front and behind) our water tankers. The situation has completely calmed down. However, we are calling on the community of Mthatha to help us locate a black [Toyota] Fortuner. It is the Fortuner from which the threat was made; this person needs to be arrested,' Dr Sooliman said. He also issued a stern warning for the 'water mafia'. Mchunu was in Mthatha at the weekend to engage with and thank members of the SAPS for their efforts during the floods, which have, to date, claimed 90 lives and displaced hundreds more. 'The police will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate or obstruct those who are working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to our people. Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need. Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of Ubuntu. No individual or group will be allowed to profiteer off disaster or compromise the safety and well-being of our people. Law enforcement will act decisively,' Mchunu said. He further stated the SAPS will ensure the safety of all humanitarian workers in the area and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. 'We have also been made aware of individuals who go to the homes of those who lost their lives due to these floods, with a view to committing acts of theft from these homes.
