‘Plastic pollution alarming'
Prayagraj: Harmful effects of plastic and benefits of nano fertilisers that reduce waste and minimise environmental impact were discussed during an event jointly organised by The Times of India (TOI), Indian Farmers Fertilizers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) and the State Bank of India (SBI) at IFFCO Ghia Nagar, Phulpur, on Monday.
The event marked the culmination of environment week celebrations. Senior executive director of IFFCO, Sanjay Kudeshia, graced the event as the chief guest.
Kudeshia emphasised the importance of eliminating plastic usage to declare surroundings plastic-free. He highlighted the benefits of nano fertilisers, which reduce waste and minimise environmental impact.
Umesh Kumar, senior manager EPC, warned about the dangers of plastic pollution, citing alarming levels of plastic in human bodies and the environment.
He advocated for using jute and cloth bags instead.
The event featured a skit by local children, promoting environmental awareness and showcasing the benefits of nano fertilisers.
Five local farmers shared their experiences with nano fertilisers and were honoured for their contributions.
The ceremony concluded with prize distribution to winners of various competitions held during Environment Week. Senior officials, employees, and their families attended the event. tnn

Dept speeds up appointment of guest teachers in Chamarajanagar
Mysuru: To address the shortage of teaching staff in govt primary and high schools, the department of school education and literacy expedited the appointment of 765 guest teachers across Chamarajanagar. The move aims to ensure the smooth functioning of the schools during the academic year. The process will help the department conduct classes hassle-free without any disturbance to students related to teaching aspects. The district bagged the 27th rank in the SSLC results. This year, the department had made all plans to improve the SSLC results and focus on public exams for 8th class students by giving special attention to guest teacher recruitment. As many as 178 guest teacher posts were vacant in high schools in 2025-26, including 664 in primary schools. The state govt permitted guest teachers for high schools on priority as teachers must prepare their students for public exams. Against the 664 pending in primary schools, state govt permitted only the filling of 583 guest teachers from primary schools. Speaking to TOI, deputy director of public Instruction Ramachandra Raje Urs said that he gave directions to all block education officers to speed up the recruitment of guest teachers. The department also continued the services of most of the guest teachers from the previous year after considering their performance subject-wise. The process is completed in most schools. A clear direction was given to reject candidates bringing recommendation letters, he said. "As govt started the process of appointment of guest teachers to primary and high schools early, it will help students prepare for exams," said Revanna, a retired teacher of Chilakwadi village.

IndiGo's Guwahati-Chennai flight makes emergency landing at Bengaluru airport after pilot's ‘Mayday' call: Report
An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai with 168 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) after the captain gave a 'Mayday' call -- a distress call via radio communication - citing insufficient fuel in the plane. The incident comes on the heels of an Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed the lives of 241 passengers, leaving one survivor. The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had issued a Mayday call shortly before it crashed. The pilot of IndiGo flight 6E-6764 (A321), which departed from Guwahati at 4:40 PM, attempted to land in Chennai at around 7:45 PM. However, after the aircraft's landing gear touched the runway, the pilot opted for a 'go around' in what is known as a 'balked landing'. 'About 35 miles from Bengaluru airport, the captain made a 'Mayday' call,' TOI reported citing sources. Describing the situation, a passenger said, 'The sudden and steep climb had many passengers on the edge of their seats, some visibly frightened.' The individual chose to remain unnamed. Multiple sources at the airport and Air Traffic Control (ATC) confirmed to TOI that the pilot did not attempt a second landing in Chennai. Instead, he chose to divert the flight to Bengaluru. Sources at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) told TOI:, 'After getting the distress call, the ATC alerted the on-ground staff members who swung into action. Medical and fire services personnel were in place. The aircraft landed safely at 8.20pm.' Both the pilots involved have been taken off duty, although IndiGo has not confirmed this. The IndiGo plane, which was critically low on fuel, made a safe landing in Bengaluru.

UP plans to restore Ayodhya's ancient river
Ayodhya: The river 'Tilodki Ganga', once the lifeline of rural areas of Ayodhya, has gradually vanished over time as the river land was largely encroached upon with the construction of buildings in the last couple of years. The main stretch of this river falls along the Allahabad national highway, where the area is being developed with large industrial establishments and other big constructions. Now, the UP govt and Ayodhya administration are planning to rejuvenate the river. Its current form will be completely transformed, and the river will return to its original state. Talking to TOI, Ayodhya DM Nikhil Tikaram Funde said that work has begun over a 7-km stretch as the first phase. The total length of the river is 46 km. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed for the revival of one river in every district of the state, and this directive is being implemented here. The work is being carried out to restore the river to its original form between Gaura Brahmanan and Panditpur in the Sohawal area through the MNREGA scheme. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also taken cognizance of the issues related to the river and ordered the Ayodhya district magistrate to take steps for its rejuvenation, including exploring options for reusing discharged water. The locals have also raised concerns about the impact of the airport expansion and the discharge of wastewater from the multinational giant's bottling factory on their village. "We have highlighted that the airport's construction has led to waterlogging in some areas and that the drain water overflows during the monsoon season," said Om Prakash Singh, an environmental activist. "We have lodged complaints with the authorities against the bottling factory that is not only contaminating the river but has also encroached a large part of the river," Singh said. Chief development officer Krishna Kumar Singh said that the work of cleaning the river and removing encroachments will be completed by June 30. Following this, a large-scale tree plantation campaign will be conducted along the riverbank from July 1-7.
