PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's labour demand rose 1.4% in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 9.06 million jobs compared to 8.94 million in the same period last year, according to the Employment Statistics released on Thursday (May 15) by the Statistics Department (DOSM).
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth is in line with Malaysia's improving economic performance, projected to continue, supported by resilient domestic demand.
Of the total jobs recorded, 97.9% were filled, while the remaining 2.1% were vacant.
He said the number of filled jobs rose 1.4% year-on-year to 8.87 million in Q1 2025, compared to 8.75 million in the same quarter last year.
All sectors contributed to the growth, with the services sector leading at 1.8%, followed by manufacturing (1.5%) and construction (0.5%).
In terms of economic activity, the services sector accounted for the largest share of filled jobs at 52.8% or 4.69 million, followed by manufacturing at 26.9% (2.38 million), and construction at 14.1% (1.25 million), he added.
Commenting on the distribution by skills category, Mohd Uzir said the majority were in the semi-skilled category, accounting for 5.55 million or 62.5% of total filled jobs. This was followed by 2.23 million jobs in the skilled category and 1.09 million in the low-skilled category.
On current labour demand, he noted that job vacancies rose 1.2% year-on-year to 194,100 in Q1 2025, up from 191,900 in the same quarter last year.
He said the manufacturing sector remained the main contributor to job vacancies, making up 57.3% of total vacancies, with the electrical, electronic and optical products sub-sector recording 33,900 vacancies, followed by 20,200 vacancies in the petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products sub-sector.
The agriculture and construction sectors reported 31,800 and 25,400 vacancies, respectively.
By skills category, semi-skilled roles accounted for the largest share of vacancies at 56.3% (109,200), while skilled and low-skilled roles made up 24.4% (47,400) and 19.3% (37,500), respectively.
On job creation, Mohd Uzir reported that a total of 33,200 new jobs were created in Q1 2025, an increase of 3.4% from 32,100 jobs recorded in the same quarter last year.
"The rise in jobs created, especially in skilled and semi-skilled categories, may encourage individuals to pursue higher education and specialised training, building a workforce with expertise and innovation," he noted.
He stated that Malaysia's labour demand is set for continued growth, reflecting the nation's commitment to strengthening its economic foundation and achieving sustainable development.
The manufacturing sector remained a key driver, with the Monthly Manufacturing Statistics reporting a 1.1% year-on-year increase in employment within the sector during the quarter, he explained.
"This trend aligns with the objectives of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), which aims to drive employment growth and enhance workforce capabilities within the manufacturing sector," he said. - Bernama

Malaysia's total trade in May grows to RM252.6 billion, surplus enters 61st month

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's trade maintained its growth momentum in May 2025, driven by continued global economic growth and changes in demand for the country's goods in international markets, the Department of Statistics Malaysia reported. Total trade exhibited a 2.6% increase to RM252.5 billion from RM246.1 billion in the previous year, primarily driven by a 6.6% growth in imports to RM125.9 billion, while exports went down by 1.1% to RM126.6 billion. The trade surplus continued for 61st consecutive month since May 2020, although it decreased 92.3% to RM766.3 million. Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Malaysia's export reduction in May was driven by a decrease in domestic exports. Domestic exports, which accounted for 79.6% of total exports, were down by 4.7% to RM100.8 billion, while re-exports, making up 20.4% of total exports, increased by 16.1% to RM25.8 billion compared with May 2024. Compared with April 2025, exports, imports, total trade and trade balance recorded decreases of 5.2%, 2%, 3.6% and 85.1%, respectively. From the perspective of commodity group, 136 out of 258 export groups showed a decrease. Meanwhile, 118 out of 260 import groups showed an increase compared with the same month of the previous year. Mohd Uzir said lower exports were attributable mainly to Singapore (-RM4 billion), followed by Japan (-RM1.8 billion), the Philippines (-RM719 million), China (-RM679.2 million), India (-RM557.2 million), Russia (-RM400.5 million) and Turkiye (-RM295.3 million). Higher imports were mainly from the United States (+RM5.1 billion), followed by Taiwan (+RM3.2 billion), China (+RM3.0 billion), Kuwait (+RM685.2 million), Switzerland (+RM424.1 million), Mexico (+RM401.1 million) and Hong Kong (+RM352.7 million). Commenting on exports, Mohd Uzir said the decrease was reflecting the declines in petroleum products (-RM3.3 billion), liquefied natural gas (-RM1.7 billion), chemical & chemical products (-RM952.5 million), crude petroleum (-RM730.5 million), iron & steel products (-RM377.3 million) and paper & pulp products (-RM279.2 million). The increase in imports was logged for electrical & electronic products (+RM14.3 billion), metalliferous ores & metal scrap (+RM1.1 billion), other agriculture (+RM366.4 million), other manufactures (+RM321.7 million), jewellery (+RM228.6 million) and palm oil & palm-based agriculture products (+RM129.2 million). Mohd Uzir also underscored the upsurge in imports by end-use which was in accordance with higher demand for capital goods. Imports of capital goods (18% of total imports), surged by 63.7% or RM8.8 billion to post a value of RM22.7 billion. However, imports of intermediate goods (51.8% of total imports), were down by 4.4% or RM3 billion to RM65.1 billion and imports of consumption goods (8% of total imports) registered a decrease of 1.1% or RM113.8 million to RM10.1 billion compared with May 2024. Total trade, exports and imports for the period of January to May 2025 registered an improvement. Total trade grew by 6.2%, to RM1.23 trillion, in line with the rise in exports (+5.5%) and imports (+6.9%). However, the trade surplus decreased by 9.4% to RM46.9 billion compared with the same period in 2024.

Perak records highest domestic tourist numbers last year

IPOH: Perak attracted the highest number of domestic tourists in the country last year, recording 10.2 million visitors, surpassing all other states. State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said the figure was based on the Domestic Tourism Survey 2024 published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on June 19. He said the number marked a 36.1 per cent increase from the 7.5 million visitors recorded in 2023. "Perak registered the highest domestic tourist arrivals at 10.2 million, followed by Selangor with 9.6 million and Pahang with 9.5 million. "Congratulations to all stakeholders—government agencies, local authorities, district offices, NGOs, traders, and the public, for their efforts in making Perak a leading tourism destination," he said in a statement. According to the report, popular destinations in Perak included Teluk Batik, Lumut Waterfront, Ipoh Night Market, Gunung Lang Recreational Park, and Pangkor Island. The districts with the highest tourist presence were Kinta, Larut and Matang, Manjung, Kuala Kangsar, and Batang Padang. Loh said the increase was also attributed to the success of last year's Visit Perak Year campaign, which saw strong collaboration between the state and federal governments. "We must keep up this momentum. Last year, only four states, including Melaka, launched state-level tourism campaigns. But with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaching, every state will be actively competing to attract visitors," he added. – BERNAMA

Tengku Zafrul: Intel, Vishay set to expand semiconductor presence in Malaysia

THE Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has held discussions with leading tech giant, Intel, regarding the latter's plans on reinvestment and expansion of its operations in Malaysia. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Intel has invested RM50 billion to-date, and provided employment opportunities to 12,300 local workers. 'Intel's presence in Malaysia since 1972 has grown in tandem with the country's rise as a global semiconductor hub. 'This meeting reflects Intel's continued confidence in Malaysia as its key investment destination outside the United States,' he said in a post on the social media platform X today. He added that the Malaysian government, through MITI and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), remains fully committed to supporting Intel's expansion in the country. 'Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030), and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), we will continue to strengthen a sustainable and competitive industrial ecosystem,' Tengku Zafrul said. Meanwhile, in a separate post, the MITI minister said a United States-based manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, Vishay Intertechnology, has expressed its intention to expand its operations in Malaysia. 'They already have a presence in Melaka, and the rise in the number of high-tech semiconductor facilities is in line with the objectives of NIMP2030 and NSS,' he added. Tengku Zafrul had led a working visit to Washington, United States, on June 18-20. — BERNAMA
