Samra Michael wears many hats … And you can be sure that no matter which one she's sporting, she's doing so with style. Known for both books and looks, Samra is one-half of the dynamic duo behind She Well Read, a podcast and online book club. She's also behind Xdressin, an online shop offering vintage and upcycled pieces. Most recently, she launched Samra, the Curator, a boutique marketing agency to help celebrate her love for Birmingham and local creatives.
We caught up with Samra to hear how her many passions align, her favorite places in Birmingham, and more!

What inspired you to start your marketing agency, and what sets it apart?
I started it because I noticed the lack of diversity in advertising. I got my degree in marketing at UAB in 2019. Since then, I've worked on world-class, international brands and in agencies. I noticed the system wasn't necessarily set up for minorities to thrive, and I was working with clients who weren't local.
I've always lived in Birmingham, and I feel extremely passionate about planting my roots here. So, I wanted to take all my marketing knowledge (gathered working for companies in Oregon, Texas, and other places) and really invest it in Birmingham.
A lot of young people graduate and then leave for better opportunities. What sets me apart is the network I've built … I've been lucky enough to work with so many creative people here that I know there's talent in Birmingham, and I don't need to look elsewhere for creatives.
Tell us more about your second-hand online store Xdressin.
Xdressin started out of the need for my passion for fashion to be expressed in some way. Going into college, before I settled on marketing, I thought about working in retail as a buyer … But after learning about the fashion industry, I realized that my morals didn't align with how the industry is run.
So I started to learn more about sustainable fashion (what it was called then). Now, we've moved on to calling it 'circular fashion.' Ultimately, I just wanted to fight injustice in the fashion industry. So, I started reselling clothes. I've always collected clothes with a focus on upcycling, which is working with a piece that has been gently used and bringing new life to it. I thought that was one way to be a part of the industry without creating more waste.
Pin
What's something you wish more people understood about sustainable or circular fashion?
It doesn't have to break the bank. If your budget allows, it is fantastic to support small-batch fashion designers. But the price is sometimes out of my budget. I'm just a regular girl in her 20s. So, for me, it's all about thrifting and finding interesting ways to get more life out of my clothes.
I think looking at it as more of a lifestyle change is really important because sometimes we have these moments where we're like, 'I need to change everything in my closet.' Our culture encourages that — a 'rebrand' or jumping on board a new trend. But try not to purchase things. Live with what you have and challenge yourself to re-wear things.
What inspired your podcast and book club, She Well Read?
First of all, we were trying to get back into reading. And second of all, we wanted community. Alana Baumann and I were both very active in school and had been a part of so many organizations. That loss of community we had on campus made us feel like all we did was get up and go to work every day. We needed something else.
We want to encourage a love for reading in everybody, even people who don't necessarily see themselves as readers. We'd like to encourage everybody to read whatever is available to them. We also like to speak to Black women to encourage them to be well-read, know what's going on, and support each other.
Pin
How do you see your love for reading, fashion, and marketing intersecting?
In each of the businesses, I'm coming from a place of 'I don't see myself represented here.'
With She Well Read, we try to raise awareness about injustice. We stopped a whole season of our podcast to focus on George Floyd. One of the things I'm most proud of doing is book drives to support a youth detention center. We've posted on our Instagram about Adriana Smith and issues of reproductive justice in the South. And one of the first things Xdressin did was upcycle T-shirts to donate money to Black Lives Matter.
With Samra, the Curator, my indie marketing agency, I really want to give credit to Black creators and creatives who aren't often tapped by other agencies.
Who is inspiring you right now?
An artist named Aminé just dropped an album called 13 Months of Sunshine, and I have had it on repeat. As an East African, I always look out for other East African artists, and he's been around for quite some time. I've always respected him, but I think he really tapped into something authentic on this album.
Pin
What do you like to do when you're not working?
Rest. That looks different at different times. It may be meditation. It may be sitting on my porch. It may be taking a walk, exercising, or sweating. It may not seem like resting, but it allows my mind to rest.
What are some of your favorite places in Birmingham?
For food, I love Trattoria Zaza and Automatic Seafood. For coffee, I love Grounds and Honest Coffee in Homewood. And when I want to enjoy nature, I like the Vulcan Trail.
What's the best advice you have to offer?
Don't make yourself small to make others comfortable.
Name three things you can't live without.
Coffee, gardening, and music.
Lightning Round!
Last great book you read: Nothing Personal by James Baldwin

A Famed Nashville Chef's STUNNING Indian Wedding
Share with your friends! Pinterest LinkedIn Email Flipboard Reddit If you're a culinary enthusiast, a Nashvillian, or both, the name Vivek Surti likely rings a bell. As the acclaimed chef and founder of Tailor, Vivek is a James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef in the Southeast, with The New York Times naming Tailor among Nashville's 25 best restaurants. But beyond accolades in the kitchen, Vivek recently stepped into an entirely new role: newlywed! Vivek tied the knot with podiatric surgery specialist Sheela Chockalingam in the fall of 2024. From swiping right on Hinge to an exquisite four-day wedding celebration, we got an inside look at Vivek and Sheela's love story. Pin The couple's story began in a thoroughly modern way: swiping on Hinge. But the romance that followed was anything but ordinary, and before he knew it, Vivek was planning a proposal during a trip that included stops in Baton Rouge and Los Angeles. 'As I was discussing plans with my sister, we decided on surprising Sheela during a day trip to Malibu on the beach,' Vivek recalls. However, nature had other plans. 'On the morning I was going to propose, the tide was so high that it flooded the beaches to the street.' His sister quickly organized a backup plan at Point Dume, a scenic overlook above the Pacific Ocean. 'There was a point where Sheela had to climb a few steps before she saw a ring of flowers — marigolds, magnolias, and roses — as the sun was just starting to set,' Vivek describes. 'As I led Sheela to the flowers, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said, 'Yes! I will!' Almost immediately, two dolphins jumped out of the water below us.' How picture-perfect is that? Pin Then, in November of 2024, Vivek and Sheela would embark on a four-day series of events that blended rich cultural traditions with personal touches — and a stunning array of wardrobe changes. The celebration began with a Ganesh Puja and Mehndi in Brentwood, TN, followed by the Pithi ceremony the next day. Each ritual was steeped in tradition, leading up to their wedding day and culminating in a grand reception. Vivek kicked the celebrations off in style by riding in on a horse. Pin Pin Pin Pin Pin Pin According to Hindu tradition, planning began with a carefully chosen date. 'Our first steps were securing a date that was suitable for our families,' Vivek explains. 'In Hinduism, there are holy and auspicious days on the calendar, with certain days being ideal for weddings. Luckily for us, November 8, 2024, was such a date.' Once the date was set, they enlisted Premier W.E.D. to help bring their vision to life. The wedding ceremony itself took place at the Sri Ganesha Temple. 'This temple has been one that Vivek's family has been going to for over 40 years, and it's also the place where our parents met for the first time,' Sheela shares. Pin For her wedding attire, Sheela honored her family by wearing her mother's Kanchipuram wedding saree, an heirloom her mother originally wore 45 years ago. 'This saree, a stunning deep yellow adorned with intricate gold zari designs, embodies the artistry that makes these silks India's most captivating and timelessly beautiful,' she tells us. Pin The morning of the wedding reflected their personalities: Sheela's began at 5 a.m. with hair, makeup, and a heartfelt handwritten letter to Vivek. Meanwhile, Vivek enjoyed a champagne breakfast with his groomsmen, featuring his favorite Krug and breakfast sandwiches from FatBelly Deli. Pin The wedding's aesthetic was a love letter to their heritage. 'We wanted to highlight the traditional beauty and romance inherent in a Hindu wedding,' Sheela says. 'Our inspiration stemmed directly from the rich cultural heritage, the timeless rituals, and the deep symbolism that define these sacred ceremonies.' The floral arrangements were equally thoughtful. 'During the wedding ceremony, we had garlands made of roses and baby's breath, which were shipped from Madurai, India, which is where Sheela's parents grew up,' Vivek says. The mandap was adorned with marigolds, roses, and jasmine flowers. Pin The reception was held at OZ Arts Nashville, chosen for its versatile space and stunning sound and lighting capabilities. 'For the reception, we kept true to having a cocktail hour, announced entrances, a first dance, speeches, and a cake cutting,' Vivek tells us. Guests enjoyed a lively cocktail hour, though rain forced them indoors. The cocktail hour featured a vibrant array of flavors: Pani Puri, lamb Mamana kebabs, black-eyed pea salad in watermelon radish cups, and Lata's (Vivek's mom) catfish. Pin Pin Pin Naturally, Vivek was intimately involved in the planning of the seated dinner. 'I was so excited to work with my friends on this menu — including Molly Martin of Juniper Green and Patrick McCandless of Rambler — two people who I knew I wanted to cater from the beginning,' says Vivek. 'The most important aspect of the food for me was making sure we had something that was a nod to our Indian heritage, while showcasing the bounty of amazing produce and community that we have built at Tailor,' he adds. The meal included fall squash salad, grilled chicken roulade, and vegetable biryani. 'Our wedding cake was the best ever because it was made by the supremely talented Rebekah Turshen, pastry chef at City House,' Vivek gushes. 'The base was a carrot cake, infused with chai masala. The cream cheese and yogurt frosting was accented with boondi (crispy chickpea balls), mamra (crispy rice), and nuts for texture.' Pin While the ceremony was guided by tradition, the reception was more modern. 'With the decor, we tried to modernize the feel of this event versus the wedding,' explains Vivek, 'installing an amazing vinyl wrap as the dance floor, having many chandeliers in the space, as well as some late-night chicken sandwiches from S.S. Gai.' Pin Pin Though a sparkler exit was planned, a torrential downpour meant a spontaneous indoor send-off instead. Guests cheered the happy couple down the hallway before they dashed into their getaway car. Pin Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your special day with us! Airfairness Launches AI Flight Compensation Tool After Acquiring Weekend-Built Startup via LinkedIn
Collision 2024's #1 Startup to Watch in 2025 Moving Fast toward launch of Groundbreaking Flight Delay Compensation Platform TORONTO, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ - Following a splash at last year's Collision tech conference and selection as the #1 startup to watch in 2025, airfairness is launching the public-facing component of its next-generation, first-of-its-kind platform, the Flight Navigator. This AI-powered tool offers a faster, smarter method for air travellers to determine whether they are eligible for flight compensation in less than two minutes. The Flight Navigator makes it simple for passengers to build their trip and determine what part of their itinerary caused the disruption to their travel plans. With more than $350 million in potential compensation every day, the tool helps travellers claim what they're owed. It checks the fine print against international passenger rights legislation, like those in Canada and Europe, and immediately informs passengers if they might be eligible to claim up to $1,000 each in compensation. "When a flight has been delayed or cancelled, it's bad enough. The last thing you want to do is to become a lawyer to see if you are owed compensation," says John Marzo, CEO and Co-founder of airfairness. "The Flight Navigator changes that. It puts clarity and confidence in the hands of the traveller." The launch represents the first milestone in airfairness' ambitious rollout of an end-to-end AI platform aimed at removing the stress, paperwork, and uncertainty from flight delay claims. Subsequent AI-driven features will roll out later this summer, equipping travellers with even greater tools to clarify their rights and receive what they are owed with no back-and-forth and no fine-print surprises. To aid this next stage of growth, airfairness has acquired a New York-based travel tech AI startup founded by Máuhan M. Zonoozy, the former Head of Innovation at Spotify. "AI is ripping at an unprecedented rate, and companies should recalibrate how they think products are built to remain at the bleeding edge," stated Zonoozy. "What used to take a year to build now takes a weekend, a cursor pro account, and a couple upper deckies. This is the future." Zonoozy and his protégé, Chloe Meuse, were inspired by the massive impact of the CrowdStrike outage in July 2024, which stranded millions of airline passengers. Over a single weekend, they built and launched a tool to help passengers. The site quickly caught fire after Zonoozy mentioned it on LinkedIn. The post caught Marzo's eye, and within 11 LinkedIn comments, the value was realized, and the acquisition was closed. This deal strengthens airfairness' ability to navigate aviation data and real-time analytics and decipher complex flight information. Its intelligent tools work together to reveal the real reasons behind delays. "This acquisition fast-tracks our vision to make airfairness the world's smartest passenger rights platform," says David Linardi, CTO and Co-founder. "We're all about fairness, efficiency, and building something passengers can rely on – without needing a law degree." With thousands of travellers compensated and increasing interest from all over the world, airfairness is solidifying its position as a leader in travel tech and consumer protection. The Flight Navigator is now live at — and this is just the beginning.
