Marketing and brand management have undergone significant changes in the past decade, mainly driven by rapid advancements in technology and their impact on customers' daily lives.
Widespread internet access, the evolution of e-commerce, the availability of information, and more recently, the rise of AI, have shifted the balance of power from brands to customers. This shift allows customers to set the narrative and influence brand perception and behavior.
Looking back 50 years ago, communication was mainly one-way, with brands controlling the storyline, and customers being highly influenced by advertising through traditional channels.
Today, with the democratisation of the internet, customers can set the narrative, access unbiased sources of information, and influence the rise or fall of a brand. Social media has further accelerated this shift in power, enabling customers to directly shape brand perception and drive conversations.
So, what does this mean, and how has it impacted the way organisations behave and bring their products or offerings to market? Simply put, it has made the concept of the customer is king truer than ever – not only for customer brands but also for any brand that wants to lead in its sector and remain profitable.
It has opened a direct dialogue between brands and customers, allowing customers to voice their opinions on the good, the bad, and the ugly. Customers now demand that brands listen, take their feedback seriously, and act on it. This shift ensures that customer satisfaction is prioritised over profit-making.
We have seen numerous examples of this shift, such as the case of Volkswagen in 2015, when it was discovered that the company had installed software in diesel engines to mislead emissions tests. This resulted in billions of dollars in fines, a significant drop in sales, and long-term damage to the brand's reputation.
On the other hand, LEGO, which faced declining sales and financial difficulties in the early 2000s, engaged with its community, incorporating feedback into product development. This led to the successful launch of lines like LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Friends, resulting in a resurgence in popularity and significant business growth for the brand. While the strength of this argument is clear for business-to-customer (B2C) brands, the same applies for business-to-business (B2B) brands as well.
The shift in the relationship between customers and brands supports the importance of putting the customer at the center of any go-to-market strategy, making a customer-centric approach more critical than ever. Understanding the customer's needs, pain points, and decision-making drivers is necessary for any brand to succeed and differentiate itself from competitors.
Deeply understanding customers and identifying key insights that encourage an emotional connection is essential for standing out and building customer loyalty. Below is a closer look at the key benefits of making customer wants and needs key drivers of strategy:
Building sticky relationships: Enabling customers to feel that a brand understands their issues and is committed to providing the appropriate solutions will help build a strong emotional connection, keeping the brand top of mind. This fosters loyalty and trust, encouraging customers to return. Research reveals that 88% of customers who trust a brand will buy again.
Sticky relationships are not easy to build; they take work, but once established, the benefits are well worth it. Trusted companies outperform their peers by up to 400 per cent in terms of market value, according to Deloitte research.
Relevant innovation: Keeping an open dialogue and gathering feedback is a great way to gain relevant insights that can drive innovation. Innovation should address clear customer needs to make it relevant and enable adoption.
Increased loyalty and trust: When customers are happy and feel understood, they are more likely to return, ensuring a more consistent revenue flow. In line with human nature, people tend to gravitate towards what they know and trust – change is not always easy or comfortable.
Therefore, it's very important for companies to prioritise a positive customer experience at the core of their strategy. This approach helps build brand loyalty and affinity, encourages customers to prioritise the company's products or services, and motivates them to refer their friends or leave positive reviews. All of this will help the business retain revenue and attract new customers.
Increased and accelerated growth: Focusing on customer needs will often lead to upselling and cross-selling opportunities. Knowing a client's challenges allows brands to think strategically about more ways to cater to those needs. This not only makes customers feel more understood but also increases their openness to considering additional services, which will lead to business growth. It's a win–win situation for all.
An example to illustrate all of the above is Patagonia, which has been successful in building trust with customers while positioning itself as environmentally friendly. By being transparent with their customer base, sharing information about their production process, and showing that they put their money where their mouth is, Patagonia has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability.
The company is honest about its sourcing; upfront honesty has paid off for them, retaining a loyal customer base and gaining trust. Their openness has also driven innovation, which has led Patagonia to look for more ways to bring sustainability to the core of their business, ultimately leading to significant business growth. Patagonia's brand promise isn't just a slogan — it shapes every element of their business.
According to an article on Statista, Patagonia has achieved annual sales of over $1bn for three consecutive years, starting in 2019. It is important to note that profit figures from the company are not publicly available.
Taking the outside view and bringing it in is not an easy task. It requires time and effort to truly understand audiences and gain the right insights. This process often requires combining various data points and personal information to understand the customer journey, while still keeping market trends in focus.
When applied consistently across an organisation, this approach offers a competitive edge, driving sustainable revenue growth and success. For organisations to truly succeed, gathering relevant customer centric insights must be a core element of their strategic planning.
They need to be intentional about acquiring these insights and allocate the necessary funds and resources to do so. While this investment may seem significant at first, it is one that is bound to produce substantial returns in the long run.

Volkswagen's premium brand Audi could build a plant at a new location in the United States under scenarios being considered to placate President Donald Trump in the tariff conflict, the Spiegel news magazine reported on Friday. Audi is considering building a plant in the southern U.S., which would be the more expensive option out of a number of scenarios being considered, with company sources estimating costs of up to 4 billion euros ($4.6 billion), the report said. An Audi spokesperson said that the company aims to build up more of a presence in the United States. "We are currently examining various scenarios for this. We are confident that we will make a decision this year in consultation with the (Volkswagen) group on how this will look in concrete terms," she said in an emailed statement, reaffirming earlier comments made by the company. Audi has no production of its own in the U.S., but Volkswagen has a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee and one under construction near Columbia, South Carolina. Trump's announcement of sweeping tariffs has already racked up hundreds of millions of euros in costs for German carmakers heavily reliant on their export business, according to an industry representative. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are in talks with Washington over a possible import tariff deal , seeking to use their U.S. investments and exports as leverage to soften any blow, sources have told Reuters. This Father's Day, the LEGO Group is inspiring families across the UAE to rethink gifting traditions with its regionally tailored 'Build It With Him' campaign – a creative call to action that invites parents and children to connect through the joy of LEGO® play. Ula Bieganska, Head of Marketing, LEGO Group MEA says, 'The creative vision was inspired by the idea that Father's Day isn't really about celebration it's about connection. Our campaign for the LEGO Group set out to reframe the occasion not as a moment for grand gestures, but as a chance to be present and playful. The campaign was a collaboration between Publicis Middle East and MSL Middle East, with MSL handling the strategy and insights and earned amplification and PME leading on creative. Insight-led storytelling To shape the campaign, the team conducted extensive local research to better understand Father's Day in the UAE The strategy was rooted in a deep understanding of Father's Day in the UAE, an occasion that is officially acknowledged but often culturally overlooked. Bieganska says, 'We carried out primary research to understand mindsets and habits around Father's Day, among the country's diverse expat population, alongside the influence of Khaleeji family dynamics, and the last-minute nature of gifting behaviour in this market. Rather than importing a global idea, we built a regional-first narrative that played into human truths, social behaviours, and localised gifting patterns.' She adds, 'A combination of local research and cultural insight revealed a disconnect between how Father's Day is recognised and how it is actually experienced in the UAE. A YouGov study showed that 75 per cent of UAE dads had received the same gift more than once, with cliché and predictable gifts like mugs, wallets and shirts topping the list,' 'Yet, when asked about their most meaningful gifts, a quarter of dads said it was something handmade by their child. Our focus groups echoed this sentiment, as dads spoke not about being celebrated, but about wanting to spend more time with their kids. This emotional truth became the anchor for the campaign,' reveals Bieganska. Transforming tradition through play The campaign's primary goal was to build brand affinity by positioning LEGO bricks as a meaningful Father's Day gifting solution. Rather than focusing on conversion, it was designed to resonate emotionally with families and boost top-of-mind awareness during a typically under-leveraged seasonal moment in the region. 'While this wasn't a conversion-led campaign, it was designed to drive customer loyalty through emotional resonance and cultural relevance,' says Bieganska. 'Build It With Him' The campaign ran across owned the LEGO Group social channels, earned media, and in-store with an activation at the LEGO Store at Mall of The Emirates. Creative assets included static visuals, with playful LEGO brick-built reinterpretations of traditional Father's Day gifts, all created for digital-first consumption. Aside from this, influencer marketing also took place. Influencers known for parenting and lifestyle content were chosen for their alignment with LEGO's values of imagination and quality. Their content focused on sharing the experience of building LEGO gifts with their children and reflecting on Father's Day meaningfully, enhancing engagement and authenticity. The 'Build It With Him' campaign specifically spoke to two core audience segments in the UAE. Expat mums (aged 28–45) – the key gift buyers in the household, often time-poor but looking for thoughtful and meaningful gifting options that reflect shared family values. Older expat kids (aged 16–25) – trend-aware gift-givers who want to move beyond the generic and find gifts that feel personal, creative and social-media-worthy. A celebration of connection beyond the occasion More than a seasonal campaign, 'Build It With Him' champions the enduring value of creativity and cross-generational bonding – turning a traditionally quiet holiday into a playful opportunity for family connection. 'The key brand message is simple but powerful: the best gifts aren't bought, they're built. Through this lens, LEGO bricks becomes more than a product, it becomes a tool for cross-generational connection and shared memory-making,' Bieganska concludes. By tapping into regional behaviours and emotional truths, the LEGO Group campaign transforms a token holiday into a creative opportunity for connection. 'Build It With Him' not only refreshes the Father's Day conversation in the UAE, but also reinforces the LEGO Group's role as a brand that champions shared experiences and the enduring value of play across generations. The campaign launched ahead of Father's Day on June 21, coinciding with World Play Day on June 11, and continues across key channels in the UAE. South Africans prefer three brands when choosing a used vehicle: Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford. According to Lightstone Auto, these brands make up half of financed used vehicle sales in 2025. Insights drawn from Lightstone Auto's transactional data reveal clear trends in consumer preferences when it comes to financing used light vehicles, with these three brands emerging as the top choices among South African buyers so far this year. Interrogating the most popular vehicle types, the Ford Ranger Double-Cab and the Volkswagen Polo Vivo both lead with a 6% share of financed sales, followed closely by the Volkswagen Polo on 5%. The Toyota Hilux Double-Cab and Suzuki Swift ranges currently round out the top five. 'Looking at how buyer preferences in the used vehicle space have changed over the last five years, four of the five have appeared in the top five used vehicle types consistently since 2020. The remaining spots in the top 10, however, have rotated among ten other vehicle types over the same period,' says Andrew Hibbert, auto data analyst at Lightstone. Fuel-type preferences have remained largely stable over the past five years, with the split between petrol and diesel-powered vehicles being fairly constant, but it is noticeable that the growing popularity of hybrid and electric vehicles is slowly beginning to make inroads among used vehicle buyers.
