Molly Parker: House of Cards actress stars in US drama Doc which has just aired in Australia
Molly Parker has a newfound respect for doctors after starring as one in Doc, the US's biggest medical drama, which has finally hit screens in Australia.
The Canadian actress plays Amy Larsen, the chief of Internal Medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis, who sustains a brain injury and loses the last eight years of her life.
Dr Larsen is forced to navigate an unfamiliar world — while still practising medicine, she has no recollection of patients she's treated, colleagues she's encountered, the man she loves, or the tragedy that caused her to push everyone away.
She can rely only on her estranged 17-year-old daughter, whom she remembers as a nine-year-old, and a few devoted friends, as she struggles after losing nearly a decade of knowledge and experience.
It is based on an Italian series of the same name inspired by true events.
Parker, best-known for her roles in House of Cards and Lost in Space, said while stepping into scrubs had been a challenge, she discovered a greater respect for medical professionals.
'The first couple of episodes are quite emotional for Amy, and so just that, in and of itself, is quite difficult,' she told The Sunday Times.
'It's given me a whole new appreciation for actors who play medical professionals, but also for medical professionals. It is such hard work and just so important. It's given me a whole a whole new respect.'
With many days of intense and emotional filming, Parker said she uses knitting, a hobby she took up a few years ago, to cope.
'For me, in between setups or in between scenes, I need to be doing something with my hands, but it can't be something that takes me emotionally into another place,' she said.
'Like a big part of the job as an actor is to manage your emotional reality over the course of a day of working and knitting kind of is meditative.
'My husband's daughter just had a baby, so we have a little three-month-old granddaughter, and she's like the cutest thing ever. So I'm making little outfits.
She also has a mini dachshund, Birdie, whom she takes on walks.
While the series has aired in Australia for the first time, Parker admitted she hasn't spent a lot of time in the country.
'It's so embarrassing. And actually, I have an aunt from Melbourne, although she hasn't lived there in many, many years,' she said.
'I grew up on the west coast of Canada, and I just sort of always thought work would take me there. Like for a long time, all the travel I did was only for work, and I've sort of only recently really started travelling for myself, and somehow I just have not gotten a job in Australia.'
Doc has been renewed for a second season of 22 episodes — double that of the first season — but Parker couldn't spill the beans as she 'doesn't know very much'.
'I expect that everything you can think of is gonna happen in this second season. But for me, that's part of what is really exciting about this dynamic, (Larsen's) amnesia gives space where almost anything can exist in that void,' she said.
'All secrets and surprises are going to show up for Amy. And I guess the big question is, Is she going to get any of her memory back? If she does, what will it be? And will it be an end?'

When stars sell addiction: The price of Drake's poisoned partnership
Drake's deep investment in gambling has become the subject of sobering social media posts from the Canadian rapper. Publishing a screenshot of his losses to his Instagram Stories this week, the Hotline Bling artist revealed he had gambled nearly $US125 million in the past month — and was down more than $US8 million. 'Losses are so fried right now … I hope I can post a big win for you all soon cause I am the only one who has never seen a max,' he wrote. 'These guys max once a week.' The post comes amid Drake's ongoing multi-million-dollar partnership with crypto betting platform Stake. The deal, inked in early 2022, reportedly earns him up to $100 million annually in promotional and ambassadorial fees. In an announcement post on the online casino said: 'Music sensation, Drake, has been a long-time member of the Stake community. A player storming the high ranks of the VIP program, Drake fell in love with both the platform and the perks associated with our VIP program. It was then that this partnership was formed, based on mutual appreciation between mega-star and product.' Just how front-of-mind is the Stake partnership to Drake? Stake's social handle is the first mention in his Instagram bio, before his own companies, including OVO and his Better World fragrance. What's more, during his most recent Australian tour in February, he staged an incident of him being bothered by a drone at his penthouse suite in Sydney. After clocking millions of views for the footage of him throwing a shoe at the drone, the choreographed placement of the camera in front of his laptop — with pride of place — made it clear it was an advertisement. Alarmingly, on the same day he posted about his losses, Drake also shared a clip of himself using AI platform ChatGPT to help decide which bets to place. In the 90-second video posted to social media, Drake asks: 'Should I try a $200,000 buy on [slot game] Puffer Stacks or a $100,000 buy on [wild-west slot game] Wanted?' ChatGPT recommended betting on Wanted. He followed the advice — and lost. 'OK Wanted didn't pay out at all,' he said in the clip. 'Do you think that I should give it another shot?' Later, he jokes: 'Imagine it's a Stake representative on the other line.' Loading Instagram Post Drake's posts raise a question: is he helping to highlight the dangers of addiction — or is he desensitising audiences to the real-world consequences, normalising multimillion-dollar losses and glamourising them as entertainment? Some fans were quick to criticise him in the comment sections. 'He really be losing millions like it's Monopoly money, meanwhile I cry when my card declines at McDonald's.' 'When you're down $8M and still chasing that one max win like it's destiny. The house always eats, even if you're Drake.' 'He should also share that it's almost certainly all house money from Stake that he bets.' Drake is far from the only celebrity making headlines for gambling Rapper Lil Baby has admitted to having a gambling problem, revealing on Lil Yachty's podcast that he lost about $8 million in a day — and quit gambling as a result. In January, Bruno Mars joked about his rumoured gambling debts, writing: 'I'll be out of debt in no time,' in a post about passing 150 million monthly Spotify listeners. In 2023, NBA icon Allen Iverson spoke candidly about blowing approximately $US200 million in career earnings on legal issues, alcohol and gambling. Back home, former AFL star Brendan Fevola lost millions to gambling — selling his Coleman Medal, declaring bankruptcy, and joining I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in a bid to rebuild his image. And Bert Newton, the late Australian TV legend, faced a gambling addiction so serious it nearly bankrupted him and wife Patti. He was more than $1 million in debt and given repeated ultimatums to choose between his family and the TAB. Australia has one of the highest rates of gambling participation and loss globally, with a significant number of people suffering from addiction or related harm. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australians lose more than $30 billion annually to legal gambling — the highest per capita loss rate in the world.

Ezra Miller gives bizarre interview about ‘tentative' Hollywood return after shocking Cannes appearance
Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. Ezra Miller gave a rare — and peculiar — interview in which they addressed their return to Hollywood as well as their extremely surprising Cannes appearance earlier this year. The actor posed on the red carpet for the first time in two years at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy, on Thursday and told Italian outlet, Lo Speciale Giornale, that their relationship to cinema is now 'on tentative grounds'. Miller — who had a slew of legal issues in 2022 — also spoke out about their blink-and-you-miss-it red carpet appearance at Cannes in May, during which they sprinted across the media line at the premiere of Lynne Ramsey's Die, My Love, reports The New York Post'sPage Six. 'I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,' Miller said of Ramsey, who previously directed Miller in 2011's We Need to Talk About Kevin. Miller claimed they're writing an unnamed film with Ramsey, and added, 'that will likely be the first thing I do' when returning to Hollywood. 'I've been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude,' Miller remarked, 'which has been friendly to me'. Miller has given a peculiar new interview. Picture: YouTube They also said they'd 'do anything' for Ramsey, despite Cannes being a 'tough re-entry point' to the industry. 'If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak be there, you know what I mean?' The Perks of Being a Wallflower star was memorably arrested and charged in Hawaii following two alleged incidents at a karaoke bar in March 2022, to which they pleaded no contest. Then, they were hit with a restraining order by two residents claiming they harassed and threatened them, which was later dropped. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY A month later, Miller was arrested on a second degree assault chair after they allegedly threw a chair and hit a woman during an encounter at a private residence. In June 2022, a parent accused Miller of grooming their child from the age of 12. Another parent came forward the same month with an allegation that Miller 'menaced their family one evening in their downstairs neighbour's home and acted inappropriately toward' a 12-year-old minor. No charges were filed against Miller and they later released a statement saying, 'I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive action'. That same month they were accused of allegedly housing a mother and her three children in an unsafe environment at a Vermont farm — though by August, Miller told cops the family hadn't lived there in months. Miller as The Flash in a scene from the DC film. Also in August 2022, Miller was accused of burglarising a Vermont home and allegedly stealing several bottles of alcohol. They pleaded guilty to misdemeanour unlawful trespass and was put on one-year probation. Miller issued an apology later that month and announced they were seeking treatment. 'Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,' they told Variety at the time. 'I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.' The actor has been at the centre of a series of controversies in recent years. Picture:During the interview with the Italian outlet on Thursday, Miller seemingly addressed the drama, waxing philosophical in a rambling set of comments. 'When we go through those crucibles, if we can survive, which was up in the air for me if I'm being real, we then have that capacity to see other people in their crucibles and just to reach towards them,' they said. 'I think that grows more and more rarefied in our world too. Like, the capacity to do that, the desire to do that, the willingness to do that,' they continued. 'We've become very consumed in notions of perception, self-perception, how we're perceived in the world. I really believe in digging past that and being a friend to people. And the people who did that for me, they have my lifelong devotion,' they explained. 'And also I'm grateful for the revelations of who was not that,' they said. 'When you work in this industry, you'll find yourself in deep, deep relation with a lot of people who do not give a single f**k about you, or your well-being, at all. And so, not that I don't hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did and a lot of things that happened in that time, but I'm really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss.' Where to get the world's best dessert in Perth
Parkerville A delicious moist pudding served with lashings of butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice-cream and a biscuit crumble. Pretty much the perfect way to end a meal by the fireplace at this country pub. We feel cosy just thinking about it. Bassendean Bertie Bassendean. Credit: Bertie Bassendean The sticky date ice-cream sandwich may be a twist on the classic but we are here for it. A generous slab of vanilla ice-cream sandwiched between two sticky date cake-like slices. All served in a pool of butterscotch sauce. Pubs love doing 'elevated' classics, and this is the gold standard of how it's done right. Subiaco Not only is this sticky date pud a delicious sponge of moist goodness. It sits on a pool — a pool! — of butterscotch sauce. Is there such thing as too much butterscotch sauce? Of course there isn't. One of our favs. Piara Waters This steak house keeps it classic when it comes to desserts but that doesn't mean it can't do something a little special when it comes to its sticky date. The pudding includes the standard butterscotch sauce, but is taken to the next level with candied walnut, date crumb and house-made orange blossom ice-cream. Delicious. Highgate and Perth Ischia. Credit: Ischia It's worth pacing yourself when stuffing your gob full of excellent pizza at either of these popular Italian restaurants. That's because you need to leave space for the excellent sticky date pudding. The butterscotch sauce is next level.
