Movie fans disappointed after claiming new summer rom-com was ‘misleading'

Film fans have been left disappointed over the biggest summer rom-com, claiming it was 'mis-sold'.
Materialists hit the big screen in the US last week ahead of a UK release of August 15, and boasted an all-star cast led by Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.
It follows an ambitious matchmaker in New York, who finds herself in need of some romantic advice after she is torn between her imperfect ex (Chris) and someone who could be her perfect match (Pedro).
Unfortunately for Lucy, her love triangle causes chaos for her professional life as she attempts to mix business with romance.
Celine Song's flick was met with rave reviews from impressed critics and currently commands a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%, compared to a slightly lower 69% from the audience.
However, many viewers have blasted Materialists for not quite doing what it said on the tin, and questioning why the movie was promoted as being a romantic comedy when 'it was neither'.
Kelly commented: 'So boring and depressing! Mad that they marketed this like a rom-com, it was neither romantic or comedic!'
'Not what was advertised. Not funny,' Lara agreed.
Robert L posted: 'Not the RomCom I expected or was advertised… dialog was very slow and at times the storyline was actually a bit serious… Love these actors, but this could have been a lot better…'
'Tonally an absolute mess. Movie is wildly, and shockingly inconsistent from scene to scene. Does not deliver on its premise or the promise of its marketing,' Hollywoo E complained.
Sophia S fumed: 'This was terrible, the marketing for this movie is incredibly misleading. The storyline felt incomplete and relied on exhausted clichés. Overall, it lacks creativity and depth.'
As Susan A added: 'I was expecting a rom com. This had some darker issues than I expected.'
The official synopsis for the film reads: 'A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.'
Celine previously lifted the lid on her efforts behind the camera for Materialists in an interview with A24, explaining that she worked as a matchmaker in her previous career and was able to draw on those experiences.
She shared that it's 'very easy to dismiss' the genre of romance, but 'the truth is that love affects all of us. More Trending
'I'm always trying to make a movie that I want to watch. And to me Materialists is made for the audience in 2025, to talk about love and the way it exists today.
'It's completely worthy of cinema.'
Materialists is in cinemas now in the US, and is released on August 15 in the UK.

A Hollywood star transformed into Anthony Bourdain while filming scenes for the upcoming biopic Tony earlier this week in Massachusetts. The Holdovers star Dominic Sessa, 22, could be seen stepping into the shoes of a younger version of the late celebrity chef while on the set of the A24 project in Provincetown on Thursday. Bourdain was known for starring in shows including the Travel Channel's No Reservations and CNN 's Parts Unknown before his tragic death by suicide in 2018 at the age of 61. Sessa wore a pair of black flared trousers and a red button up which was layered with a black leather jacket, which fit the '70s time period. The budding actor also sported brown curly hair as he shot scenes on a ferry. Back in April, it was revealed that Antonio Banderas has also joined the cast, although his role is not yet known. The movie will be directed by Matt Johnson, with a screenplay by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. Sessa began his film career by portraying teenager Angus Tully in The Holdovers (2023) alongside Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. The movie was a critical success, and Dominic's performance was singled out for recognition. He was honored with Best Young Performer at the Critics' Choice Awards last year, as well as Best Breakthrough Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards. The actor also recently took on a role in Tow (2025) alongside Rose Byrne, Ariana DeBose, Demi Lovato and Octavia Spencer. Dominic will appear in the Christmas comedy film Oh. What. In an interview with Boston Magazine in 2017, the TV personality reflected on his time in the seaside town. 'It's a very emotional place for me. I came of age there in the early '70s in a very magical, golden, naïve time that I don't think we'll see the likes of again.' But in this blue collar, factory-like environment, there was no blurred line, no grey area, no philosophical question to fret over. 'Dishes had to go in the washer and come out taintless and doing this swiftly and competently meant I was acknowledged as a human being by colleagues I wanted to be like. The day they promoted me to dunking fries I was overjoyed.' Anthony had also been candid about his past drug use during his youth, and he later quit heroin in the '80s. 'I was an unhappy soul, with a huge heroin and then crack problem,' the chef had told The Guardian. 'I hurt, disappointed and offended many, many, many people and I regret a lot. It's a shame I have to live with,' he admitted. He later dropped out of university and graduated for the Culinary Institute of America in 1978. The star notably worked as a chef in restaurants in New York City throughout the '80s and '90s. He had also been the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles beginning in 1998. Anthony penned a number of books during his career, including as Kitchen Confidential: Adventures In The Culinary Underbelly (2000), which became a New York Times bestseller. The chef had also written articles for publications such as The New Yorker — which published a popular excerpt of Kitchen Confidential before its publication — The Los Angeles Times, Esquire and The Independent. He gained wider recognition due to his television appearances after hosting shows including Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005–2012) on the Travel Channel. The digital series Explore Parts Unknown (2017) garnered the star an Emmy win for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series. Bourdain tragically died by suicide in France at the age of 61 while filming Parts Unknown.

Gordon Ramsay reveals moment he 'collapsed' while holding his son for the first
Gordon Ramsay has opened up about the alarming moment he fainted during the birth of his fifth child, Oscar. The TV chef, 58, recalled the scary moment with a few chuckles in hindsight while appearing on a recent podcast. The Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares star was not present in the delivery room for the arrival of his first four children – Megan, 26, twins Jack and Holly, 25, and Tilly, 23 – at the request of his wife Tana, 50. 'Let's make one thing absolutely clear, my wife didn't want me in there,' Gordon explained on SmartLess podcast. 'First of all, [Tana] said, 'I want my mum and your mum in there, you're not going to see me in that state, that side of the curtain, get out of there.' That was her decision and I had to respect that decision. Talking about the arrival of Oscar in 2019, Gordon said: 'When I did finally arrive in the theatre for our fifth baby I collapsed like a wimp! I blacked out holding Oscar in the air.' Gordon explained how Oscar arrived via C-section – or 'through the sunroof,as he put it. The TV chef was then asked what song he wanted to listen to. 'There was a lot of commotion going on,' Gordon recalled, 'I said, 'Can you play Ed Sheeran?' so they started playing Ed. They turned up the volume. 'I saw two more doctors dive in, I looked on the floor and there was blood everywhere. All of a sudden they popped him out and they came straight over to me and I went, 'Wow, wow, wow!' I sat back and collapsed like an idiot.' The pair kept Tana's pregnancy with Jesse tightly under wraps until his arrival, with the mum-of-six taking to social media after he was born revealing they'd endured a 'nerve-wracking 9 months'. She also added: 'Ramsay family complete.' Talking on the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast in 2024, Tana opened up about Gordon's lack of presence in the delivery room. 'He would've gotten all squeamish and probably fainted and all the attention would've been on him, and this is my moment,' she said, mirroring Gordon's story hilariously closely. Elsewhere in the podcast, Gordon discussed how in his downtime he likes to compete in Ironmans – a long distance triathlon consisting of a 2.4mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2mile run. 'Lots of people are scared of that level of exercise,' he said, explaining: 'I know it sounds crazy, but for me it's a way of relaxing.' Claudia Winkleman 'eternally grateful' after undergoing surgery
Claudia Winkleman has undergone eye surgery, she has revealed. The Traitors host, 53, has taken to social media to thank her eye surgeon for operating on her today. 'This amazing human makes me see. He's operated on my eyes before and he did it again today,' she said on Instagram, alongside a picture of her next to Dr Julian Stevens. 'No eyeliner for weeks and I sleep in googles (no words) but I'm eternally grateful,' she added. 'Do NOT zoom in on my left eye – it's wonky. Thank you Julian. I paid for the treatment, this isn't an ad. I just love him. It's very possible I'm still a bit sedated. Night night.' The Strictly presenter's comments section was flooded with support from well-wishers, as follower Suzanne Robinson said: 'Get well soon.' 'Love you !! Hope you feel better. Amazing man,' said ava_xoox while gurcharan_davany added: 'Speedy recovery eyeliner queen.' While it's not clear why Claudia underwent the surgery this time, she's previously been open about suffering with severe short-sightedness, which means she can't see objects far away. Speaking on the How To Fail podcast in 2023 about how she doesn't take too much notice of her appearance, Claudia explained: 'I was born, I think with minus 15 [eyes], so I've never really been able to see my face. It's all guesswork.' Claudia – who is known for her iconic long fringe – went on to say she's had operations because she was 'banging into walls' and she now wears lenses and glasses. However, despite laser eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Claudia found her vision was still blurry. Finding lightness in her eye issues – and acknowledging her trademark black eyeliner – Claudia said: 'Often when the kids have been playing with my phone with the camera switched round and I have to call somebody or I'm making a call, I'm like 'I don't understand why Ozzy Osbourne..I didn't even invite him round', and then I'm like, 'Ah, it's me.' More Trending Earlier this year, Claudia also touched on her condition on Gabby Logan's The Mid Point podcast. 'I've had so many operations on my eyes. I had a lens replacement in my left eye because my astigmatism was so bad I was minus 16, but that was 14 years ago,' she said. Claudia explained how she then became long-sighted: 'Then I had a little fiddle with but because I was so short sighted by then fixing it I'm now long sighted so I can't really read any more.
