The car with NO indicator stalk: Audi reveals its new Q3 - with a divisive feature for drivers
Audi's new Q3 has arrived and because of one potentially divisive feature it's making big news.
While the family favourite SUV has had a complete overhaul inside and out, it's the way Audi's reinvented or 'eliminated' the indicator stalk in favour of an indicator 'pad' that's got everyone talking.
Whether that's yet another motoring gimmick or a clever bit of space-saving design remains to be seen, but it's by no means the only redesigned feature on Audi's all-new Q3.
The third generation compact SUV has seen its exterior revamped to look more like the bigger Q5, had a whole suite of new interior technology added, and comes with a plug-in hybrid option that can do 75 EV miles on a single charge.
The Q3 is a very important model for Audi, as it makes up a huge chunk of sales in the UK and Europe; last year it was the fourth best-selling model in the German manufacturer's line-up, shifting 13,282 units.
Due to go on sale later this year, here's everything we know so far about the small, petrol-powered all-new Q3 SUV.
The Q3's stalkless indicator design
Rarely does a new steering wheel control unit design get so much attention, but Audi has come up with an entirely new format in the Q3 that apparently 'has great practical benefits'.
Audi used to have the gear selector in the center console, but on the all-new Q3 that's been replaced.
Instead the gear selector has moved to a stalk on the right side of the steering wheel – a standard move in many new automatic and electric cars. The stalk on the left is now a controller for the lights and has a scroll button for windscreen wipers.
But Audi's also designed a wraparound panel behind the steering wheel that has a rocker pad on the left which you move up and down to indicate, replacing the traditional indicator stalk we've been using since the dawn of modern cars.
While shifting the gear selector does save space in the center console for two cup holders, a cooled intuitive charging tray and extra USB-C ports, this might not be a winning argument for many drivers who just want a simple indicator stalk.
Tesla went stalkless in 2024 with the new Model 3 but its indicator buttons proved to be so unpopular that the US EV maker had to bring an indicator stalk back for the new Model Y.
Interior updates and tech updates for the Q3
The indicator reinvention is by no means the only major change in the interior of the all-new Q3.
Pretty much everything in fact is different, as the interior has been completely refreshed.
Instead of the luxurious but sensible cabin in the second generation Q3, the third generation has a much younger feel with a ton of ambient lighting, a modern minimal dash taken from the other new Audis of late, and upgraded tech.
The clean, sparse dash with minimal buttons is very similar to the new Q5, and is dominated by the new panoramic infotainment system.
The dual-screens combine a 11.9-inch driver's display with a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen for passengers, assisted by AI and complemented by a head-up display and a simplified menu layout.
Boot space hits 575 litres with the seats up, up from 530 litres on the previous generation
More sustainable materials have also been chosen – from recycled polyester to velour made from old fishing nets.
Boot space maxes out at 575 litres with the seats up, up from 530 litres on the previous generation.
With all the seats down capacity expands to 1,386 litres – enough to haul around some flatpack furniture.
The new generation Q3 SUV looks a lot like the bigger Q5 model but takes hints from the A6 Avant at the rear
How has the new Q3 grown up physically?
The Q3's taken a big step up, morphing into a mini Q5 and looking a lot better for it.
The second generation was starting to look dated, but this all-new Q3 has a massive single-frame grille, thin daylight running lights, and hidden main headlights – all of which are a big improvement on its predecessor and create a Q5-like presence.
Go round to the back of the Q3 and it has the same light bar and rear lights as the A6 Avant, as well as an illuminated Audi four-ring badge.
It's certainly more grown up and attention grabbing than the other two versions.
Improved ride and new engine options
Based on the same VW Group MQB platform from before, the Q3 shares a lot of the smaller A3's powertrain choices.
There are two petrol engines you can choose from, 150hp or 204hp, as well as a single 150hp diesel option.
But the main pull is the plug-in hybrid car that will allow you to drive 75 miles on electric power alone and gives you a spicier 272hp.
The main engine pull is the plug-in hybrid variant that will allow you to drive 75 miles on electric power alone and gives you a spicier 272hp
Audi's committed to bringing plug-in hybrids to the market up to 2033 and beyond, so this Q3 is just the start of many exciting, new PHEV options.
And those EV miles should be even more enjoyable to drive as the Q3 has a new suspension set up for improved comfort that minimises body roll and allows the car to glide over bad road surfaces.
There's also additional driver assist systems, including emergency assist that guides to the hard shoulder and self-park mode.
The all-new Q3 will arrive in September and start from £38,300. The top Edition 1 version will cost over £50,000
How much will the new Q3 cost? And when is it coming?
Audi's sold more than two million Q3s globally since the small SUV launched in 2011.
The third generation will cost from £38,300 and will be offered in three trim options. The top spec Edition 1 will start from just over £50,000 and come with Quattro all-wheel drive.
Get ready for the Q3 to come to the UK in September and be followed by a Sportback variant a few months later.

6 Vehicles With the Most 3rd Row Legroom
Plenty of space to comfortably stretch out Three-row SUVs and minivans exist for a reason: big families with tall people need space to stretch out. Not every three-row vehicle, however, is suited for these duties. Remember afterthoughts like the now-dead Lexus RX 350L? It had a mere 23.5 inches of third-row legroom—way too small for any adult to sit comfortably. Even worse is the current Mitsubishi Outlander, which offers a paltry 18.7 inches of legroom in the third row. Gah, what's the point? Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More Thankfully, there's good news: there are truly spacious choices on the market today that can comfortably accommodate a normal-sized adult in the third row. Whether you're ferrying teenagers to sports practice, loading up for a long road trip, or just need room for the occasional extended family gathering, these six vehicles stand out for their generous third-row legroom. 2025 Lincoln Navigator 2025 Lincoln Navigator 3rd Row Legroom: 43.5 inches The 2025 Lincoln Navigator ($99,995) is one of the premium luxury American SUV offerings today, and it's at the front of the pack when it comes to power, technology, and downright cavernous space for all. The Lincoln Navigator doesn't just impress with its luxury trimmings and commanding street presence—it also offers a best-in-class 43.5 inches of legroom in the third row. It also happens to have the most third-row legroom in the industry. That's enough for even the tallest passengers to relax without feeling crunched in the back. Plus, its plush seats and high-quality materials ensure that comfort extends beyond sheer space. Every Navigator is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine good for 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. 2025 Toyota Sienna 2021 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD — Source: Toyota 3rd Row Legroom: 38.7 inches The 2025 Toyota Sienna ($39,185) stands head and shoulders above the rest of the minivan segment thanks to standard hybrid power, available all-wheel drive, and 38.7 inches of legroom in its third-row seats that can comfortably seat the tallest kids and adults. It remains one of the best minivan people haulers out there and a brilliant shuttle for your kids and their teammates when you've got a full post-game gang to move. Standard features like 17-inch alloy wheels, dual power sliding doors, an 8-inch color touchscreen (12.3-inch optional), wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 suite that includes great tech like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning with steering assist make the Sienna a tremendous overall package. With a sprawling 36.7 inches of third-row legroom, these full-size SUVs offer more room in the way back than some vehicles provide in the second row. If you need cavernous cargo space and the ability to seat seven or eight adults in comfort, the Suburban and Yukon XL deliver. The 2025 Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL get a swath of engine choices: a 5.3L V8, a 6.2L V8, and a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel inline-six, all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. 2025 Cadillac Escalade ESV 2025 Cadillac Escalade ESV — Source: Cadillac 3rd Row Legroom: 36.6 inches The Cadillac Escalade ESV isn't just big; it's all about American grandeur that combines opulence with incredible real-world utility. Longer than the standard Escalade, third-row passengers in the ESV are treated to a whopping 36.6 inches of legroom, way more than the standard Escalade's 34.9. Even tall grown-ups and your oversized offspring can ride in comfort on long trips, so there should be no grumbling from back there. With its luxurious appointments and high-tech features, the Escalade ESV makes third-row seating a genuine pleasure rather than a punishment like so many other would-be three-row SUVs. All gas-powered Escalades get a 6.2-liter V8 engine under the hood that churns out 420 horsepower and can tow up to 8,100 pounds. 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer — Source: Jeep 3rd Row Legroom: 36.6 inches The 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer ($91,945) is the brand's big dog, but it's not just about off-road capability. The Grand Wagoneer redefines American luxury with its refined exterior and upscale cabin. But it doesn't skimp on practicality either. With 36.6 inches of third-row legroom, this Jeep ensures that adults in the way-back won't feel like an afterthought. It's a seriously capable family hauler with plenty of style to match. Standard features include 22-inch wheels, perimeter approach lights, power remote tilt-down exterior mirrors, power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, heated/ventilated 1st- and 2nd-row seats, power-adjustable pedals, 19-speaker premium audio, and 12-inch central touchscreen infotainment system. Every Grand Wagoneer gets a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine under the hood that delivers 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque, so it'll move all three rows of passengers with authority. 2025 Chrysler Pacifica 2025 Chrysler Pacifica — Source: FCA 3rd Row Legroom: 36.5 inches The Chrysler Pacifica might be the only model in the brand's lineup right now (the Voyager is just a lower-trimmed version), but it's worthy thanks to tremendous space and ride comfort. The sole American minivan in the running has long been a go-to choice for families, and it's easy to see why. With 36.5 inches of legroom in the third row, it's ready to handle carpool duty, vacation trips, and everything in between. The Pacifica's Stow 'n Go seating system only adds to its practicality, offering flexibility that's hard to beat. The Pacifica can also be had in plug-in hybrid trim with optional all-wheel drive, making it even more practical. Engine choices include a 3.6-liter V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission good for 287 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, and the PHEV with a V6 engine combined with electric motors for a total of 260 horsepower. Final thoughts There's not much point in having a three-row vehicle if there isn't enough space for more than just small kids. Those kids are going to grow, and you will also need to transport adults at times. A spacious third row can make all the difference between suffering and comfort. The good news is that many automakers recognize this need, and there are excellent choices out there. Whether it's a huge SUV or a hybrid minivan, 36+ inches of rear legroom transform the third row into a desirable spot versus automotive nosebleed seats that are for those who draw the short straw. RAY MASSEY: It's a Grand day out for Vauxhall's spacious new SUV
To be fair, I haven't tried the kitchen sink yet, but over hundreds of miles of driving, I've had a good go at squeezing a whole assortment of items into the new Vauxhall Grandland SUV. That includes: supermarket shops, potted shrubs and bags of top soil, compost and bark-chipping, plenty of luggage, golf clubs and trolley, DIY kit from B&Q, and even an Ikea 'Billy' bookshelf – the ultimate test. But it's not just the flexible boot and folding-down rear seats that are a boon in this comfortable five-seater family vehicle. With its contemporary styling, black roof and tinted rear windows, it looks cool, too. This SUV will grow on you, as it did me. Riding on 19-inch wheels, my 136 horsepower Grandland GS hybrid was powered by a 1.2 litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, connected to a 21kW (28hp) electric motor. The GS trim is the middle of three levels between Design and Ultimate. For everyday use, I kept mine in Sport mode – which was jauntier than the other two options of Eco and Normal. With an acceleration from rest to 62mph in 10.2 seconds, and a top speed of 126mph, it achieves a decent lick on faster roads and for cruising long distances on motorways. It's frugal, too: it will start with well over 500 miles of range on a full tank. But generating additional electric power on the move means that it also does more than 50 miles to the gallon. It's surprisingly nimble, too. While the range starts from £34,755, as driven, my SUV was priced at £37,350 – including £700 for the spectrum blue paint. You can shop around for finance deals and offers and, after a deposit, you could be paying as little as a few hundred pounds a month. I must admit that when, in Germany last autumn, I first tried out the more powerful 213hp battery-powered Grandland Electric (0 to 62mph in nine seconds and a range of 325 miles) along with the petrol hybrid version, I found the latter a bit underpowered. But having lived with the hybrid for a while on UK roads, I've grown to enjoy its virtues. The folding down rear seats increase load-lugging capacity in the boot from 550 to 1,645 litres Vauxhall may not be the most fashionable of badges, but with plenty of interior space, the sharp, modern face and uncluttered lines of the new Grandland won't disgrace anyone's driveway. The folding down rear seats increase load-lugging capacity in the boot from 550 to 1,645 litres. The shallow V-shaped grille and 'vizor' lights and illuminated Griffin badge and illuminated Vauxhall name on the rear hatch adds to a tidy package. This month Vauxhall launched the new range-topping 325hp Grandland Electric AWD, its first fully electric car with all-wheel drive, which accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds and has a range of 311 miles. It goes on sale in early Autumn priced from around £43,000. Howay the Leafs! As Sunderland climbs back into football's Premier League alongside rivals Newcastle, Nissan has unveiled its third generation Leaf electric compact SUV at its factory in the north-eastern city. In a vote of confidence in Britain as Nissan makes global cuts, the sportier- looking model will be built at the Sunderland plant with its 6,000-strong workforce. Vote of confidence: Nissan has unveiled its third generation Leaf electric compact SUV Just over five inches shorter but slightly higher and wider than the outgoing model, this new Leaf crossover has sharper looks, up-to-date tech and promises plenty of interior space. It accelerates to 62mph in 7.6 seconds, and Nissan say it can cruise for 200 miles at 80mph (where legal). Two battery options (52kWh and 75kWh) give ranges of 270 miles and 375 miles respectively – the latter getting you from London to the Scottish Borders. Orders begin in autumn ahead of spring deliveries. Expect prices to start from just under £30,000.
