That's a missed opportunity, considering the potential to unlock $37 trillion in additional value. However with smart manufacturing set to double by 2030, it looks as though more businesses are seizing its potential. The 2024 World Manufacturing Report projects that in the next few years, smart factories will be the norm.
In a smart factory, automation and AI are essential tools for efficiency and competitiveness. Robotics and digital twins are streamlining production lines, while predictive maintenance cuts costly downtime by flagging issues before they happen. AI-driven quality control enhances precision, reducing defects and minimizing waste.
Beyond the production line, AI-driven supply chains and real-time monitoring are transforming operations. Businesses can now anticipate disruption, manage inventory more efficiently and reduce delays. The result? A more agile, intelligent manufacturing ecosystem. By 2028, those that integrate AI and digital tools will be better placed to handle market volatility, shifting consumer preferences and sustainability pressures.
Hotspots for manufacturing expansion
Emerging markets, driven by cost advantages and rising demand, are changing the face of global manufacturing. We can expect to see these newer markets carving out niches for themselves over the next few years.
In Asia, powerhouses like China, India and Vietnam continue to dominate, with vast workforces and booming economies maintaining their competitive edge. Africa is also gaining ground. Its young population and growing industrial base are driving expansion in consumer goods, textiles and food production. Across the Atlantic, Latin America — led by Mexico and Brazil — is becoming a vital manufacturing hub thanks to favorable trade agreements and proximity to the U.S.
While high-growth markets drive expansion, Europe and North America are taking a different approach — modernizing infrastructure, ramping up automation and embedding sustainability into their strategies. The sustainability challenge
Sustainability will be a dominant force in manufacturing's transformation, but reaching net-zero targets won't be easy.
Manufacturing is energy-hungry, supply chains are emission-heavy and green solutions often come with a hefty price tag. Rising consumer demand only adds pressure, making sustainability seem like a Herculean task.
Take the food and beverage (F&B) industry — it consumes 30 per cent of the world's energy and contributes over 33 per cent of global emissions. By 2030, demand for energy in food production will rise by 45 per cent, with food waste alone adding another eight to ten per cent to emissions.
Manufacturers face a delicate balancing act: cutting environmental impact while remaining competitive. Shifting to renewable energy, optimizing energy use and collaborating more closely with suppliers are vital steps in meeting demand without further damaging the environment.
The F&B sector is also a great example of how to navigate this challenge, and Nestlé stands out as a leader in circular economy innovations. It has rethought its approach to packaging, using recycled materials and cutting virgin plastic use by 10.5 per cent since 2018. In 2022 alone, it cut total packaging weight by 200,000 tonnes, eliminating 280,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. This highlights the incredible impact a company can have by centering responsible sourcing, waste reduction and lowering carbon footprints while maintaining product quality.
By 2028, sustainability will be embedded into the core of manufacturing. Companies that fail to adapt will risk falling behind as regulation tightens and consumer pressure grows. Investment in carbon-neutral operations, AI-driven resource optimization and eco-friendly production methods will be the new standard.
A new era of manufacturing
The years ahead will bring lasting change, with smart factories, emerging markets and sustainability steering the course of manufacturing. Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid first drive review
The Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid was announced sometime ago (back in 2023!) and finally we get to drive it ahead of its imminent arrival. Ford says its hybrid allows 'ute buyers to begin their electrification journey without sacrificing any of the core capability that they need from a truck.' And that's not far from the mark after getting an introductory drive across the Tasman. Remind me again what it's all about The powertrain of the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid combines a 138kW/411Nm 2.3-litre turbo-petrol and a 75kW/300Nm motor. This lies between the engine and the 10-speed auto (or Modular Hybrid Transmission), drawing from an 11.8kWh NMC battery. Ford says that gives the Ranger PHEV a 49km EV range (ADR/NEDC). You might wonder, is that enough though? Especially when GWM offers a quoted 115km for its PHEV ute, and the Shark is good for around 70km. Ford cites its own connected-car data from Ranger owners around the world, which says they average 40km a day. Ok, some will be doing a lot more, but then for those that aren't a PHEV might be an option. Other connected-car data figures; 45 per cent of Ranger owners engage 4H and use the diff lock, 11 per cent use 4L, while 80 per cent tow. And on that, the plug-in Ranger has the same 3.5 tonne braked rating as the diesels. That's thanks to the total system output of 207kW at 6000rpm with 697Nm made at 2500rpm. The PHEV uses Ford's full-time 4WD system with the on-demand 2-speed transfer case to vary the torque flow to the front wheels. This offers 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L and a rear diff lock. So it's just as capable as a regular Ranger, as we found out. It's a hybrid so there are a few drive modes including Auto EV, described as the best balance of the two power sources, EV Now is all electric drive (battery charge permitting), EV Later maintains charge if you want to keep the battery for later use, and EV Charge has the engine pumping more effort into charging the battery. It also has a Sport and Tow Haul mode and various off road modes, all of which use the Auto EV setting to gain access to maximum output. What is the fuel consumption of Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid? Ford rates the PHEV at 2.9L/100km via the NEDC test cycle, which is a far cry from 'real world' use. As with any plug-in hybrid, consumption depends on many factors. In Auto EV mode, plying mainly free flowing highway/freeway type roads, the Ranger was recording between 6.5 and 8.5L/100km, depending on the state of charge when we set out for each leg of the trip. Compared to an XLT 4×4 bi-turbo, the 2527kg XLT PHEV is 251kg heavier, with a GVM of 3500kg (3230kg for the bi-turbo). The hybrid's payload is 973kg, bettering the 954kg of the diesel, but that is without the 39kg spare wheel, which is a no cost option for the hybrid. Departure and approach angles are similar, though ground clearance is inferior (215mm v 234mm) due to the battery underneath but wading depth of 800mm is unchanged. The other difference is the shape of the tray. To accommodate the battery beneath, the deck is set 30mm higher. The Pro Power set up (truck as mobile electricity generator) has a 10-amp, 2.3kW socket in the cabin and twin 15-amp, 3.45kW plugs in the tray. As to charge times Ford says it takes four hours at its 3.5kW (15A) AC max, while at 2.3kW (10A) it'll take seven. There are no DC charging capabilities. The hybrid is only available as a wellside which could limit interest from those needing a cab chassis version and a more specialised deck for work purposes. Ford advises against the removal of the wellside because of the Pro Power gubbins, and also the electronic fuel filler release. A PHEV's fuel vapours and tank pressures need to be managed and so the fuel filler door is locked until the button is pressed and the vapour purged. So how does it drive? The powertrain is refined for a ute. There is adequate urge in EV running, and is suitably brisk in hybrid mode. This PHEV blends the power nicely when the engine kicks in, the delivery more linear rather than arriving in a big surge. You can't influence the amount of regen, which is mild, and while the brake pedal bites early, it otherwise feels okay under foot. The hybrid has an extra leaf in its rear suspension to handle the additional weight, and the ride of the XLT we thought was a bit bumpier than usual. The heavier Stormtrak rode slightly better however. Off road, and into 4L, diff lock on, the hybrid walked up a steep rocky incline as you'd expect any Ranger too. Activating 4L puts it into Auto EV for maximum output, and the low end torque gets the job done. The progressive delivery allows you to be smooth when needed, while the power is there for when you need to 'get into it' in order to make it up and over obstacles. It's also capable in EV Now, cruising up a 60 per cent incline at a proving ground without the need of ICE intervention. It also slides around in the mud fine and waded simply through 600mm of water. Any deal breakers? What is harder to digest is the premium. The XLT PHEV is $82,990, some $15,500 more than the diesel version. That will be too much for some. The Wildtrak is $89,990, $13k more than the bi-turbo version while the launch edition Stormtrak is $94,990. That the Chinese offer hybrids with more electric range and cheaper price tags will make it that bit harder for the Ranger too.

Ford brings Tourneo Courier to Fieldays
Making its New Zealand debut at Fieldays 2025, Ford's Tourneo Courier is a compact multipurpose vehicle. Ford says it is designed to take active families away on weekends, or for work and road trips. The company adds that the multi-activity vehicle packs SUV style and practical features into a city-friendly footprint. But it can still swallow five people and all their gear. Powering the 4.34m long five-door is a 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbopetrol delivering 92kW of power and 200Nm of torque. It features an active grille shutter for optimised efficiency. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard. Designed to stand out The Active series' two-tone paint, machined alloy wheel faces and body cladding were all part of the original design. An upright grille with integrated headlamps gives a sense of width (1800mm) and stance. SUV influences wrap a roomy cabin with large windows. Amko Leenarts, Design director, Ford, Europe commented: 'We designed Tourneo Courier to help customers get the most out of life…and the exterior design expresses that 'no-nonsense' character. 'The SUV-inspired design is rugged outside and roomy inside, providing a tough, eager partner for our customers' busy lifestyles' he added. A versatile cabin The interior's digital experiences are powered by a built-in modem as standard which enables wireless software updates for multiple modules. Inside is an eight-inch touchscreen with SYNC 4 infotainment which places music, podcasts, navigation and many vehicle settings within easy reach. A digital cluster replaces analogue dials. Drivers can view their speed, traffic signs, navigation alerts and other vehicle information simultaneously, and configure the side displays to suit. A wireless charging pad, USB ports and standard wireless smartphone hook up mean occupants can stay connected. Drivers who use a phone for navigation, music or hands-free calls can clip it to the built-in phone mounting fin, making it safe but visible. There are multiple storage sites across the dash and doors. Packed with practicality Tourneo Courier's interior is designed for space and practicality, with generous room for passengers and luggage. The large tailgate keeps rain off, facilitating loading and unloading. Cubbyholes built into the side panels are designed for muddy boots or loose items. With the rear seats in place or flipped, Tourneo Courier offers 708/1656 litres of luggage space, respectively. Meantime, a three-seat rear bench offers generous head- and shoulder room. The seats are split 60/40, and fold and flip to help carry items up to 1.4m long. Tourneo Courier Active is designed to suit outdoors adventures. Seats are part-trimmed in soft technical fabric that's easy to clean, isn't affected by wet clothes, and doesn't feel cold to touch in winter. Large sliding side doors make it easy to jump aboard or strap young children into their car seats. They also avoid damaging or denting other cars when opening the rear door in tight parking spaces. An efficient enjoyable drive Confident driving dynamics, and a responsive powertrain make Tourneo Courier easy to drive in town or on the open road. Utilising Ford's latest compact vehicle platform, every Tourneo Courier comes with a comprehensive range of driver assistance systems including lane keeping, pre-collision assist, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed assist (keeps speed under the posted speed limit), driver alert and cruise control. The Tourneo Courier is available to order today, with arrivals scheduled for Q4 this year. The Tourneo Courier Active goes on sale for $55,990 plus ORCs. Ford Transit Courier As part of a double act at Fieldays, Ford'sTransit Courier is also on show, with first examples due later this year. Dubbed Transit Courier DCiV, it features a large, flexible cargo area, five-seat configuration, and a 'fold and tumble' rear seat that increases the rear load space. The load area and cabin design include customer-led features to boost productivity and comfort while at work. Multiple driver assistance technologies have made Transit Courier the first van to receive a Five-Star safety award from EuroNCAP using the latest protocols. Paul Heagerty, Ford Transit marketing manager, said: 'The all-new Transit Courier delivers the capability of a larger van while keeping the footprint compact. 'It's smart both inside and out and will be an ace in the hand for NZ businesses.' The Transit Courier uses the same powertrain as Tourneo Courier. It too is available to order from local Ford dealers today, with arrivals estimated in Q4 this year. The RRP is $49,990 plus ORCs.

Reveals and deals at Fieldays this year
The National Fieldays kicked off in Hamilton today, thousands in attendance, many looking for a bargain on something. Billed as the Southern Hemisphere's largest agricultural event, all manner of machinery and farming innovations are on display, the vast majority of which a townie like myself knows absolutely nothing about. Amongst the farm machinery however are a few of the car brands with their latest wares on display. Fieldays is about as close to a car show there is in New Zealand, and this year there were a few new vehicles making their public debut. Among them is the LDV Terron 9, one big double cab ute that is landing at $59,990. Its 2.5-litre turbodiesel makes 163.5kW and 520Nm of torque and the Terron 9 has the usual 3500kg braked towing capacity. It's 5.5m long, and 1997mm wide with a 1100kg payload. 4WD is standard with multi-terrain modes. Along with dual 12.3-inch screens inside, there is wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and a 360 degree camera. Terron 9 is backed by a seven-year/200,000km warranty. There's just one variant at launch, and it will sell alongside the T60, which remains in the range as a (slightly) smaller double cab option for buyers. The Subaru Forester was also on display, the new generation making its debut as well. Leading the line up is a new and improved hybrid version touting Subaru's full time AWD system. The news is that supply will be limited as the Japanese market alone is already holding 15,000 orders for the new model, which is beyond the firm's yearly production capacity. KGM, formerly known as SsangYong if you haven't been paying attention, pulled the covers off a new hybrid version of the Torres mid-sized SUV. At this stage, the details are scant, other than to say the brand will be testing the model locally and evaluating it for our market. But given the interest and rising demand for hybrid SUVs, you can bet it will be added to the local showroom at some point alongside the petrol and EV versions already on sale. Ford had its Ranger Super Duty on display, a pre-production model fitted with a locally-sourced work body on the rear. No word on pricing yet, but Ford sees opportunities with both the wellside version for those that like to tow and the cab chassis for more specialised work vehicles. Also new is the Transit Courier Trend, a city-friendly small van that is priced at $49,990. It has two rows of seats, the ones in the rear able to fold up out of the way to increase cargo space. It's powered by a 1.0-litre petrol turbo with 92kW and 170Nm and channels that to the front wheels via a seven-speed auto. It has dual sliding side doors and a pair of barn style doors on the rear. It looks to be a versatile machine that some businesses might find to be the right fit. There is also a passenger version called the Tourneo Courier Active at $55,990 with the same powertrain and sliding side doors but the interior is more civilised and there is a rear hatch. BYD had its Shark 6 on display, sporting a range of different canopy options and other accessories, among them one with a flat deck conversion. This is done by BYD NZ, which ensures the accessory power outlets, charge ports and venting fuel filler are all sorted properly. The deck on display wasn't cheap, some $15,990, due to the relocation of those things mentioned and others like the blind spot monitoring and reverse sensors. BYD NZ said that it expects to have a cab chassis Shark 6 available in the near future, costing between $1500 and $2000 less than the current wellside. Further down the line, expect single and extra cab versions of the Shark also. Next door you'll find GWM with its Cannon Alpha PHEV front and centre, another of the hybrid utes on display, with Ford also having its PHEV Ranger on show too. Toyota had a big presence with all manner of Cruisers and Hilux models decked out in accessories, and you get a deal on Triton at the Mitsubishi stand. JAC also has a big presence, with its PHEV ute on display, the Hunter, though that is not yet ready for sale, described as being in its prototype stage.
