New Lexia Study Examines Performance of More Than 1 Million California Students to Ascertain the Impact of Literacy Program
BOSTON, June 23, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In California, third- to fifth-grade students at 525 schools using Lexia Core5 Reading (Core5) from Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group brand, made significantly higher literacy gains compared to their peers in 4,362 schools that did not use the program. The schools were highlighted in a recently released report which compared the students' performance on the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy (SBAC ELA) assessment.
Core5 accelerates the foundational and advanced literacy skills for all students—from at-risk to on-level and advanced—in elementary grades. The research-proven program provides students with a systematic and structured approach to phonological awareness, oral language, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
"This study is the first to investigate the impact of Core5 at scale in California schools," said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. "Our study evaluated Core5's impact on more than one million California elementary students' ELA achievement during the 2022-23 school year. We started with third graders because they are the youngest students assessed on the Smarter Balanced assessment."
The Core5 and non-Core5 schools in the study had similar average scores on the 2022 SBAC ELA. However, on the 2023 assessment, third graders at the Core5 schools scored an average of 3.49 points higher than their peers at the non-Core5 schools. The scores for Core5-using fourth and fifth graders were, on average, 2.81 and 3.35 points higher respectively than their non-using peers.
The Core5 schools had more Emergent Bilingual students as well as more Hispanic or Latino students than non-Core5 schools. However, both categories of schools were similar in total enrollment and the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
"Interestingly, third and fourth grade students at the schools using Core5 also scored statistically higher—3.08 points and 3.04 points higher, respectively—on the SBAC Math assessment than students at non-Core5 schools," said Gaehde. "That fact drives home the point that improving students' literacy outcomes boosts their achievements in other areas. Since post-pandemic federal relief funds expired in 2024, school leaders have had to decide whether they should continue investing in interventional programs. These results show that Core5 is helping California educators address the critical need to improve student reading proficiency."

Is my JetBlue flight canceled? Customers entitled to refunds, alternate routes as airline pulls out of Miami

With the summer travel season in full swing and next weekend's busy July 4 holiday nearing, many airlines are feeling the pinch of softer-than-expected travel demand, as Americans find it increasingly difficult to afford the high cost of vacations made worse by inflation, and a recent string of tariffs from the Trump administration. JetBlue, which has been struggling financially, and hasn't made a profit since 2019, announced Saturday it would halt service out of Miami International Airport (MIA) effective September 3, according to The Street. It currently has one or two flights to Boston each day. Fast Company has reached out to JetBlue for comment. A spokesperson for the airline told The Miami Herald the move was ' to free aircraft for new routes, we've recently made the decision to end a small number of unprofitable flights including between Boston and Miami' and travelers booked on cancelled flights 'will have the option to fly via Fort Lauderdale or receive a full refund to their original form of payment.' The discount carrier recently lost its bid for a $3.8 billion megamerger with Spirit Airlines after a federal judge ruled it would create a monopoly. Last Monday, JetBlue Airways CEO Joanna Geraghty wrote a memo to employees that said the discount carrier was putting new cost cutting measures into place to counter decreased travel demand, and the airline was 'unlikely' to break-even on operating margins this year, as reported by CNBC. 'We're hopeful demand and bookings will rebound, but even a recovery won't fully offset the ground we've lost this year and our path back to profitability will take longer than we'd hoped,' Geraghty said in the staff memo, viewed by CNBC. 'That means we're still relying on borrowed cash to keep the airline running.' JetBlue by the numbers Shares of JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) were trading down over 1% midday on Monday. JetBlue and other airlines pulled their 2025 financial forecasts, as many companies did in the wake of Trump's tariffs, due to overall economic uncertainty. For the first quarter of 2025, which ended March 31, JetBlue reported earnings per share (EPS) of -$0.59, beating analyst estimates, which were around -$0.61. Operating revenue was $2.1 billion, down 3.1% year-over-year. It has a market capitalization of $1.40 billion. The airline's next reported earnings are scheduled for late July.

UBS boosts Aritzia price target, pointing to 'significant' opportunities for U.S. expansion

Analysts at UBS Group on Monday hiked their price target for Vancouver-based Aritzia ( from $66 to $95, pointing to significant growth opportunities in the U.S. in the years ahead. Noting a U.S. footprint significantly smaller than similar retailers, a considered expansion strategy and manageable tariff risks, analyst Mauricio Serna reiterated his "Buy" rating for the stock in a note to investors. 'Our view is the U.S. remains a long-term sales growth and margin driver for ATZ,' Serna wrote. 'We believe ATZ still has significant white space opportunities in the U.S., given it only operates 64 stores, with penetration levels well below its closest peers.' Aritzia shares were trading at $67.25 on the Toronto Stock Exchange as at 12:30 p.m. ET Monday. The stock fell below $40 in early April as tariff threats gripped the markets. In May, Aritzia said it had taken steps to minimize tariff impact in the U.S. The company says U.S. operations helped drive a strong first quarter and notes plans to expand into five more U.S. cities. Serna writes that 'ATZ remains under-penetrated vs its closest peers across every region' and highlights Aritzia's past mention of '150 potential real estate opportunities in the U.S.' The company's average pace of 10 new stores per year suggests eight years of expansion runway, Serna says. 'Importantly, we see upside to this figure as we think new locations can become available over time as other players exit the market,' he wrote. Some similar retailers have also tried U.S. expansion and struggled as a consequence, Serna notes. But UBS points to Aritzia taking 'a more prudent approach by being more selective on the location of its boutiques and ensuring the store design and visuals engage its targeted customers.' Aritzia's U.S. growth is central to UBS' forecast for earnings per share to grow at a 20 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years, with U.S. sales growing at 15 per cent CAGR over that period. Crucially, UBS estimates that U.S. margins are around 800 basis points higher than those in Canada because Aritzia prices its products at the same number in U.S. and Canadian stores. 'For instance, a customer can purchase a Babaton coat for C$200 in Toronto and will likely find the same product in New York City selling at US$200,' the UBS note said. 'This strategy implies a structural uplift to merchandise margins to Aritzia's U.S. business given a higher selling price but a similar cost base.' Aritzia's e-commerce sales 'materially slowed' in the 2024 fiscal year, Serna writes, but the company has since invested in enhancing its website and more digital marketing. 'We believe ATZ is still in the early innings of unlocking more growth on its digital channel. We see more runway ahead as the company launches a U.S. app in fiscal 2H26.' Though tariff risks exist, Serna estimates the worst-case scenario would result in only a 400 basis point headwind to margins — similar to Aritzia's initial guidance for 2026.
