SASTRA hosts international conference on radio frequency communication and networks

A two-day International Conference on Radio Frequency Communication and Networks (RFCoN 2025) was held at SASTRA, Deemed to be university, here on June 19 and 20. According to SASTRA release, the objective of the conference was to bring together a global community of researchers and practitioners to present and discuss advancements in 5G/6G Radio Frequency Communication, devices, and networks. The event was aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange, international collaboration, and promoting high-quality publications. A total of 115 papers were selected for presentation and inclusion in the conference proceedings from among 1,000 papers. It was inaugurated by Rao, Director-General, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER). Senior Researcher Carlo Scotto and Senior Technologist John Bosco of INGV, Rome, participated in conference. The conference featured two keynote addresses and six invited talks by eminent researchers from globally reputed institutions. Technical sessions were conducted in hybrid mode, across six parallel tracks, chaired by experts from leading universities. Awards were presented to the best papers in each session, the release added.

Investing in infrastructure, overhauling the curriculum, cultivating a research culture and leveraging its existing strengths—this DU college set out on a deliberate and determined journey towards change ATMA RAM SANATAN DHARMA COLLEGE , New Delhi No. 8 (2025) up from No. 14 (2020) Despite its prime location in Dhaula Kuan, rich legacy and a large student body, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College was rarely the first choice for top-scoring students coming to Delhi University (DU). That changed with National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF 2024 where ARSD emerged in 5th place. 'This isn't just imp­rovement, it's a leap,' says ARSD principal Prof. Gyantosh Kumar Jha, sitting in his office surrounded by student souvenirs. 'Overtaking SRCC, Lady Shri Ram, even St Ste­phen's—DU's hallmark colleges—is a reversal no one saw coming, though the pieces had been carefully laid out for years. Not just academics, focus on all-round development of stude­nts, that's the soul of what we tried to do here.' It shows. It has been a quiet journey of evolution, pouring crores into infrastructure, overhauling the curriculum, cultivating a dynamic research culture and placing faith in its students to deliver the results. Today, ARSD proudly boasts the highest NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) score among DU colleges: an A++ with a CGPA of 3.77. In 2023, it was declared the best DU college under the NIRF's special category, 'Research and Professional Practice', awarded an outstanding 94.84 out of 100. The college has published more than 1,000 research papers, secured many patents and numerous government research projects. What distinguishes ARSD, though, is its pioneering move to get undergraduates, and not just postgraduates, to collaborate with the faculty on year-round research. 'Our students' research papers are regularly published in international journals,' says Prof. Jha. 'We encourage students to question, explore, build ideas, be it in the arts, sciences, or social sciences.' Fortunately, ARSD's quest for aca­demic excellence has not come at the cost of its culturally vibrant atmosphere. Its 40-day theatre workshop every year has become a signature initiative, attended every year by alumni as well as theatre enthusiasts at home and abroad. 'It's a big deal here,' the principal says. 'Our students got selected for the National School of Drama. This workshop is a way for them to gear up for it.' A MODERN CAMPUS Walking around the campus today, you encounter a space redesigned for contemporary times. Classrooms are now digitally equipped, labs have been spruced up and sustainability is a visible commitment, reflected in the bamboo structures, the manicured lawns, rainwater harvesting systems and vermicomposting units. Admini­strative processes are digitised, CCTV cameras ensure safety and the newly renovated canteen serves delicious meals with a side dish of nostalgia. Most crucially, a new kind of student is now filing past ARSD's gates—those with marks in the 90s and seeking a mix of a rigorous academic environment and creative freedom. Placement offers have surged, tie-ups with prestigious institutions like the National Productivity Council and the Netaji Subhas University of Technology have deepened and the faculty is encouraged to invest in personal growth—collectively logging in 1,100 hours of professional development in the past five years. This transformation hasn't happ­ened overnight, nor is it a result of any single sweeping reform. It's the product of a steady, determined pursuit of excellence. 'We were never tied to rankings,' says Jha. 'We were chasing quality. The rankings followed.'

Organised by the K J Somaiya School of Engineering, the conference brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore transformative technologies shaping our collective future. The conference was inaugurated in the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Sanjay Jambhulkar (Senior Scientist, BARC), Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai (Vice Chancellor, SVU and former Chairman, UGC), Dr. Suresh Ukarande (Director & Dean, K J Somaiya School of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University), Dr. Nandkumar Gilke (Registrar, SVU), and Dr. Shailesh Nikam (Organising Secretary and Professor). 'A new domain of epidemics is emerging from environmental risk factors. Climate change, even a rise of just 0.5 to 1 degree in temperature, is impacting 12% of the population by exacerbating heat-related diseases. Additionally, exposure to various artificial environmental agents poses significant health risks. This has led to the rise of exposomics, a new discipline focused on understanding the health effects of environmental exposures. Given these challenges, healthcare remains a critical focus area worldwide,' said Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, Somaiya Vidyavihar University. With over 120 delegates, the conference featured 93 paper presentations and 7 posters, creating a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange in clean energy, precision agriculture, and digital healthcare. Selected papers will be published by Taylor & Francis with individual DOIs and will be submitted for Scopus indexing, significantly contributing to the global body of academic research. The highlights of the conference were dignitaries from various fields. Dr. Sanjay Jambhulkar (Senior Scientist, BARC) spoke about the use of new technologies in agriculture and food security, emphasising their critical role in building sustainable food systems. Dr. Sudhir Ranjan Jain (Somaiya Vidyavihar University) presented insights into quantum computation for energy, highlighting its potential to revolutionise energy systems and contribute to sustainability. Dr. Nandkumar Kunchge (Director, K J Somaiya Institute of Applied Agricultural Research, Sameerwadi) presented regenerative agriculture methods which are hoping to take agriculture back to its deep connection with Mother Nature. Dr. S. D. Sharma (Founder Auflows CardioTech Pvt. Ltd. and Retired Professor from IIT Bombay) presented palliative surgical procedures required for congenital heart disease patients having Univentricular hearts to help their pulmonary circulation. 'Energy, agriculture, and healthcare are the three critical pillars of our future. With rising population and urbanisation, the demand for renewable energy (i.e. solar, wind, tidal, and hydrogen) is only going to increase. Research in these areas is not just ongoing, it's essential. Tomorrow's breakthroughs may come from innovations and research e.g 2cm x 2cm solar panel generating the same power as today's larger systems (2m x 2m). This is where scientists, academicians, and industry leaders must come together to solve real-world challenges," said Dr. Suresh Ukarande, Director & Dean, K J Somaiya School of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University. In recognition of outstanding contributions, Best Paper Award from each domain were presented to Dr. Sarika Bukkawar, Mr. Haseen Shaikh, Ms. Sonia Pol and Mr. Nitish Yadav.
