6 of the best skirts that nail this top summer trend - starting from just £35

Daily Mail04-06-2025

Much more than anything else in my wardrobe, my collection of skirts seems to define each era of my life. There was the late noughties and early 2010s, my university years, which was all about the most minuscule of mini skirts. There was a period of pleated midi skirts being huge – I think about 7 years ago – which became my office uniform for a while, and is why I have ended up with a blue velvet version in my wardrobe (probably time to donate that one). And there was the slip skirt phase, more recently still, when all I wore were mid-length, bias cut slip skirts, including (of course) a leopard print version inspired by Realisation Par.
Now, however, those once ubiquitous slip skirts feel a bit plain and boring – at least in comparison to the newest trend that I'm seeing everywhere, which takes the plain old slip skirt and upgrades it with lace trims and unusual hemlines. Think of a mash-up between your old slip skirt and some beautiful French vintage lingerie, and you've got the idea.
Popular with fashion designers from Dries Van Noten to The Row, and worn by celebrities including Alexa Chung (really, who else do we need?) the lacy slip skirt feels modern and fresh, with a feminine vibe that balances out the current trend for oversized tailoring and 'ugly' shoes.
So, how to style it? One option is to keep your top half very simple – a white T-shirt, a fine grey knit – anything that feels classic and clean enough to balance out the whimsy of a lingerie-inspired skirt.
Another look that's popular right now is to toughen up the outfit with graphic T-shirts, chunky loafers and a huge bag – very Gen Z, although anyone could take elements of it to channel a modern approach to the pretty slip.
While DÔEN is selling perhaps our favourite version of the slip skirt, it does cost an eye-watering £378, so we've searched the high street for some more affordable alternatives…

‘We're here to spot predatory men': the new force patrolling Dua Lipa's Wembley show

In the hours leading up to Dua Lipa's first headline show at Wembley stadium the stifling heat was as striking as the colours. Fans resplendent in costumes inspired by their idol milled around the concourse, and groups of women took selfies, jigging with excitement. But among the jollity, specialist Met Officers interspersed in the crowd were on the hunt for something different: 'We're here to spot predatory men.' On the lookout for offences ranging from upskirting to sexual assault, seven specially trained officers stood on standby as scores of female fans, most of them aged between 14 and 30, filtered into the venue. They were there as part of an initiative billed as 'the first of its kind' by the Met. The idea is to combat violence against women and girls in real time. According to the force, reports rose by more than a third between 2018 and 2023. By putting officers in places where women may be vulnerable, while they are distracted while dancing with friends or having enjoyed a drink at a concert, officers are hoping to bring down numbers by stopping attacks before they happen. One of the officers on patrol at the Lipa concert was 23-year-old Sherelle Jones. 'I'd like to be the help that I wish I had if I was in that situation,' she said, watching a sea of pink cowboy hats and selfie sticks outside the stadium. The patrol was first rolled out on 5 June during Beyoncé's sold-out Cowboy Carter tour at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will provide an increased police presence at 51 large-scale concerts throughout the capital this summer. According to the Met, it has already led to the removal of one man on suspicion of stalking and threatening behaviour, and the arrest of another for upskirting. 'I'm quite new to the job, but it's been eye-opening,' said Jones, who joined the Met last year. 'Even behaviour I witnessed at the Cowboy Carter tour when I was off duty made me see that this is really needed.' Many female concert-goers were inclined to agree: hours before the singer was due on stage, friends Maya Somerville and Anneka Terrance, who had travelled from Scotland to the stadium, had already planned their route home after dark. 'As a woman, there are so many things that you automatically do that you shouldn't have to,' said 28-year-old Somerville. 'Like I sometimes walk home with my keys between my knuckles.' An increased police presence, said Terrance, means 'you don't have to be constantly looking over your shoulder every two seconds'. According to the group, there were 17 reports of violence against women and girls at London's large-scale music events last year, but with the number of such events more than doubling in 2025, and 3 million people expected to attend events at Wembley alone, police fear the number could grow. Not everyone was quite so convinced that more police meant better protection for women. 'Generally seeing a lot of officers puts me on edge,' said 24-year-old Alyx Spanton. 'But especially when they're male.' Of the seven officers on duty on Friday, just two were women. 'This is a female-dominated event – there are so many other women around you that you generally just feel safe. Women support women better than police support women,' Spanton added. Her friend Alicia Long, 25, was similarly cynical: 'When I hear the Met police, I automatically think of Sarah Everard. 'For me, more police isn't the solution. It's bizarre – this is not the environment where I feel unsafe. A football event? That's the one that needs this. Not a concert by a female artist attended by women.'

Coronation Street star goes Instagram official with her new boyfriend just weeks after revealing romance

A CORONATION Street favourite has gone Instagram official with her new boyfriend and praised her man for "blessing my life." The ITV actress posted a gushing tribute to her other-half in a series of social media slides celebrating his 23th birthday. 7 7 7 7 Cait Fitton, who plays Corrie 's Lauren Bolton, had teased her mystery man weeks ago, after telling fans she'd received a Jellycat cuddly toy gift from "my boyfriend." Now the 23-year-old screen star, who had admitted she wanted to be in Corrie since the age of five, has returned the favour, arranging for a series of 23-shaped silver balloons to fill his room as well as a happy birthday banner. She added the sweet caption: "A day celebrating you." Deciding not to name her partner, she then posted a series of snaps showing happy moments together, including them glammed up as well as holding hands. Cait then wrote: "Happy birthday to my man. "Thank you for blessing my life." The soap star, who joined the show back in 2022, has decided against revealing her partner's identity. OFF SCREEN Cait's life away from the Weatherfield cobbles recently came to light. She is originally from Lancashire and ventured into performing arts at the age of three. While it's clear Cait has a talent when it comes to acting, having also starred in Doctors, she's also a great singer. My teacher asked me what I wanted from life when I was five-years-old – I said 'I want to be in Coronation Street' She previously wowed her followers online after posting a clip of her singing a rendition of Ben E. King's Stand By Me. Cait always had her sights set on Coronation Street, previously telling us she told her entire class in school how she wanted a role on the ITV soap. She spoke exclusively to The Sun and said: "The teacher asked us, 'What do you want to be when you're older?' Children were saying 'a fireman' or 'a nurse', and I said, 'I want to be in Coronation Street'. "I remember all the teachers were amused, they couldn't believe it. I watched it religiously." She wrote: "My younger self is screaming right now!!! I want to say a big thank you to all the cast and crew at @coronationstreet for inviting me in with open arms and making me feel so welcome! "Thank you to my amazing agent Brooke Kinsella at @intertalentactors for constantly supporting me and always pushing me to achieve." Remembering family members who have passed on, she continued: "Also a massive thank you to my family and friends who have supported me throughout this process and been with me along the journey so far! I dedicate this role of achievement to my family who were huge fans of the show but unfortunately are no longer with me, but I know if they were, they'd be bursting at the seams!" CORRIE FUTURE Meanwhile, back on the ITV soap, Cait recently exclusively told The Sun how the soap will feature a game-changing episode based on its younger cast. Fans have seen Lauren caught up in an epic disappearance plot and her connection with the wicked Joel Deering. She spoke to The Sun at the British Soap Awards where they revealed the "different" twist that would be rocking the soap. Cait told us: "There is gonna be something quite different in the near-near future where we see all the younger cast come together. "We really enjoyed that because nine times out of ten you don't really get to see people unless you are working with them. "Working with people our own age has been so much fun. "It was two weeks of us non-stop altogether." She then joked: "I felt sorry for the crew and directors by the end of it but it was so much fun." 7 7 7
