York co-owner calls for immediate reform of National League promotion structure

The Minstermen missed out on a return to the Football League as they lost in the play-off semi-finals to Oldham, having finished second in the league table behind champions Barnet, 28 points clear of the final play-off position.
In February, the National League launched the '3UP campaign' with the aim of securing three promotion places to League Two for the 2025/26 season.

But Uggla has called for 'an immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model' with the intention of York earning instant promotion to League Two.
In an open letter to the National League and the EFL chief executive Trevor Birch, she said: 'I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment at the current promotion system between the National League and League Two, following a season where York City FC, despite finishing 28 points clear of seventh place and winning 12 more matches, were denied promotion.
'Such a glaring imbalance not only undermines sporting merit but erodes the very foundations of fair competition.
'To dominate a league campaign so comprehensively (Barnet the only exception), only to be forced into a play-off lottery, is structurally unjust.
'It penalises excellence and rewards inferiority in a way no professional league system should condone.
'While I am aware of the historical basis for the two-up structure, it is no longer fit for purpose.
'The gap between the top National League clubs and the lower EFL clubs has narrowed, and in many cases reversed, making the case for three-up promotion beyond compelling.
'The '3UP' campaign rightly reflects the sentiment of every National League club and countless supporters.
'But waiting until 2025–26 only deepens the injustice for clubs like York City, who have already paid the price for a system built on outdated assumptions.
'I urge both governing bodies to urgently consider transitional reform, whether via immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model.

'At the very least, this season's outcome should provoke an honest re-evaluation of what fairness in football truly means.
'For clubs, fans, and the integrity of the English football pyramid, it is time to reward merit and restore credibility to the system.'
Oldham returned to the Football League after they beat Southend 3-2 after extra time in the play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.
Uggla added: 'I would also like to point out that writing this letter should not undermine the achievements of Oldham Atletic from their victory at Wembley yesterday, and to Southend United for making the final. Their accomplishments should not go unnoticed.
'Too many great clubs, including Oldham and Southend, have fallen into this league with little chance of redemption due to the lack of promotion places.
'The current system is simply not sustainable anymore.'
The EFL declined to comment.
The change would require a change of league regulations via a vote of EFL clubs, and would require a majority among all clubs and a majority among Championship clubs.
It is understood the matter was discussed by the EFL board earlier this year but no clubs vote is currently planned.
Clubs have previously indicated they would consider changes to the current position on promotion and relegation from the National League to EFL as part of a complete package of measures and reforms across the pyramid from bottom to top.

Harry Hall says anyone would go to work feeling sick with so much cash on the line Battling Harry Hall went from ambulance to Top 10 and over £400,000 at the Travelers Championship after dragging himself through illness. The English star maintained a terrific run of recent form to fire a sizzling last-round 65 and shoot up the boards. ‌ Hall backed-up at Top 20 at the PGA Championship and a tied-sixth alongside Scotland's Bob MacIntyre at the Charles Schwab, but it was not without considerable drama as he revealed after the event the struggles he had to even get through the tournament. ‌ The 27-year-old considered withdrawing from the competition on Saturday morning as he toiled badly prior to his third round and only got through due to medical intervention with the knowledge he was playing for big points and big bucks another driving force. Hall bagged $540,000 for finishing just three shots behind World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and No.2 Rory McIlroy as Keegan Bradley won and explained: 'I was in the locker room debating whether to withdraw or not because I didn't feel great at all and ended up teeing off without a warm-up and without a swing, just went straight to the first tee after getting two IVs in the ambulance and just battled my way around for one-under yesterday. I think that kept me in the tournament. I think I just did well to play, to be honest. 'What inspired me to play? I did think it's a Signature Event if I can just survive 18 holes and not give up any ground or have a chance to have a decent tournament, obviously the points and the money. I think anyone else would turn up to work sick if they could make a quarter of a million, I think is what I was in. So I'm definitely turning up. 'Friday night I was sick all night, yeah. Then I woke up, didn't feel any better, so I went in and got checked out and they put me on two IV drips and then after the round yesterday [Saturday] I was gasping for breath all day on the golf course because it was pretty hot, too. I went in for another IV drip after the round. Then I woke up this [Sunday] morning great after like 12 hours of sleep. So I'm just fortunate I had the mindset to go out there yesterday and finish the round.' Asked what caused it, he continued: 'Just something I ate or something like that. I think there's a bug that's been going around. I think Eric Cole didn't make it because he was sick.' Hall's efforts paid dividends and with solid form over he past half-dozen events, he's rising the standings and up to World No.74. He said: 'I'm hitting the ball really nice. I focused a lot the last couple weeks on my grip. Which I think has helped my dispersion a little bit and just my consistency and my ball striking. That with just honing in my swing and everything's in a good spot.' Hall is now inside the Top 50 for the FedEx play-offs sitting at 47th and added: 'I think it's massive. The Tour's getting so competitive and to have an edge by being in all the elevated events where the points are elevated too, just to have that opportunity to make a schedule and have it determined at the start of the year and to have a chance to play for as many points and as much money, I think it's huge.'

Manchester United may be able to finally offload Jadon Sancho in a swap deal that would see a top European striker with a strong personality head to Old Trafford A potential swap deal that would see Manchester United part ways with Jadon Sancho and welcome Dusan Vlahovic could be on the cards. The Englishman is expected to be sold this summer after spending the entirety of last season on loan to Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Conference League. Sancho's last game so far for the Red Devils came in the Community Shield last year, with his likely sale putting an end to what has been a hugely disappointing period for both parties. ‌ Among the possibilities of his possible departure is the 25-year-old leaving English football to join Juventus in exchange for the Serbian striker. Vlahovic, who was a prior target for Arsenal, has largely played a bench role at the Italian giants since the loan arrival of Randal Kolo-Muani in January. ‌ Reports in Italy have said that the club are proposing to offer the striker - who has a year left on his contract - in order to capture Sancho, who has 'not let go' of the winger since first registering interest in signing him last year, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. While Vlahovic has maintained a respectable goal-scoring record of 57 goals in 144 games, the 25-year-old has failed to replicate the devastating form in front of goal that he showed during his time at Fiorentina. He did score 16 goals across all competitions this season, which is just one less than Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee managed combined. On top of his superiority as a scorer ahead of their forward options, the Premier League giants will certainly be buoyed by reports from Corriere dello Sport that Vlahovic turned down a mammoth offer worth £17million a year from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr earlier this year. Not yet in his prime, the decision to remain in a top European league will come as a positive sign to United chiefs about the desire the Serb has to accomplish honours at the highest level rather than taking a cash grab. A player devoted to his club and team-mates is certainly a sought-after attribute and it's one Vlahovic displayed last season during a trying time for Juventus. ‌ After a fourth consecutive Serie A draw where his side could only muster up a 2-2 draw against Venezia, the Juve players, as per tradition, walked over to the fans under the Curva to thank them for their support. However, the feeling wasn't mutual. The supporters hurled insults and disrespectful chants at the players, which Vlahovic didn't take too kindly to as he shouted back at the fans. According to Sky Sport Italia, despite the players walking away, the fans continued with the insults, which prompted the striker to turn to them and gesture a sarcastic thumbs-up at them. ‌ While it's never healthy for a player to argue with their own fans, it shows United that Vlahovic isn't afraid to speak his mind and will stand up for his teammates when he feels it is necessary. Adding such a strong personality to the dressing room could have both positive and negative effects, and Ruben Amorim will no doubt be taking a lot of different factors into consideration as he continues his search for more reinforcements this summer, including a new striker. Amorim has so far overseen the arrival of one new signing this summer in Matheus Cunha, who they bought for £62.5m from Wolves. While interest remains in Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres, United are said to face competition for the attackers from Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, respectively.
