Rangers and Celtic left facing awkward stick or twist fixture dilemma after major SPFL rule change
IT'S something the hierarchies at Rangers, Celtic and other Scottish Premiership clubs have long been publicly demanding of league bosses: give us more help in Europe.
Well, now they've given that help - and the 2025-26 season promises to be the acid test of how it works in practice.

That's because league bosses quietly introduced a new rule this season which allows all teams involved in European playoff round clashes to request postponements of their Scottish Premiership matchday 3 clash on the weekend of August 23/24.
But with that fixture falling just seven days before the first Old Firm match of the season, it remains to be seen whether Rangers or Celtic take them up on it.
It's no co-incidence why the rule has come into force this season - with both halves of the Old Firm needing to get through the playoff round if they are to reach the Champions League after drops to Scotland's coefficient meant the loss of an automatic spot.
Hibs, Dundee Utd and Aberdeen, of course, could all take advantage of the rule too - with perhaps the safest bet all season being that Jimmy Thelin's Dons (already in the Europa League playoffs) choose to postpone their matchday 3 clash that weekend AGAINST Dundee Utd.
Hibs, too, could see merit in pushing their trip to Falkirk back if they can make it past FC Midjyjtlland to reach that far.
We already know for sure that Celtic will be involved in the Champions League playoff round on the Champions Path, giving them a game on either the Tuesday or Wednesday that week ahead of the Old Firm.
The situation with Rangers is more complicated.
While they too will still hope to be riding high in the Champions League qualifiers - where they likes of Benfica or Club Brugge are potential opponents - they could also end up in a Thursday night clash in the Europa League or even Conference League playoffs that week.
Alternatively, were they to WIN their opening Champions League qualifier vs Panathinaikos then LOSE - they could be spared the chore of a playoff round clash altogether and drop straight from the UCL 3rd qualifying round direct into the Europa League groups.
But after today's fixture reveal, we now know what both sides will face on matchday 3.
Celtic transfer special - Nygren in and Kyogo to return
And on the face of it Rangers have been handed a far tougher fixture, away to St Mirren in Paisley.
Over to Russell Martin then to decide whether he thinks it serves his team's interests better to postpone their trip to Paisley in order to prioritise his team's prep for a potential playoff round clash.

Celtic will surely fancy their chances of taking care of Livingston at home even if it means making a number of changes due to their European commitments.
Depending on what happens in the early part of the season Martin, therefore, must weigh up the possibility of dropping three points behind Celtic at this stage of the campaign - particularly with the first Old Firm game of the season just a matter of days away.
Dropping a distance behind the Hoops so early in the season will be something he won't want to contemplate.

Cup final loss will leave 'bitter taste' for Celtic
Charlie Mulgrew believes defending champions Celtic will be fired up for the start of the next campaign after missing out on a treble last begin their quest for a fifth successive Premiership title at home to St Mirren on 3 second league match is away to Aberdeen, who prevailed on penalties in May's Scottish Cup final to deny Celtic a domestic clean sweep."I think the cup final will leave a bitter taste and they'll be thinking 'we need to get back at it'," said Mulgrew, who played for Celtic between 2010-16, winning seven trophies."When you look back it's hard to criticise last season, with how well they did in the Champions League, but trebles have become such a regular thing."Celtic have won all three main prizes on eight occasions, most recently in the 2022-2023 39, reckons the return of Scotland defender Kieran Tierney is "massive", while suggesting winger Nicolas Kuhn "could probably be replaced" and expects to see more new arrivals in all areas of the pitch."Brendan Rodgers will looking at all positions to keep everyone on their toes," he said."I think another centre-back is one of the main things they'll be looking at. You'd imagine a winger or two will come in."Rodgers is entering the last year of his contract in what is the manager's second spell at Celtic Park but Mulgrew does not think there is any rush to agree new terms."We'll have to wait and see," he said. "Maybe just honour the contract and see where that takes the club and where everybody sits. Then everybody can decide."

Watch Flamengo vs Chelsea for free with Club World Cup clash not on UK TV
With Chelsea set to take on Brazilian side Flamengo at the Club World Cup, here's the kick-off time, streaming details and Blues team news as Enzo Maresca prepares to make changes Chelsea continue their FIFA Club World Cup campaign against iconic Brazilian side Flamengo. The Blues made a winning start at the expanded 32-team tournament, which they qualified for thanks to winning the Champions League four years ago. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scored the goals as Enzo Maresca's side defeated Los Angeles FC in front of a sparse crowd in Atlanta. Neto opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark before £30million summer signing Liam Delap made his mark as a second-half substitute by setting up Fernandez to seal the points 11 minutes from time. Maresca was already looking ahead to Friday's clash with Flamengo in his post-match interview. He said: "We have to recover. We have a game in three days so we will see. We are going to prepare in the best way and for sure try to win." Addressing the impact of Delap, he added: "The good thing about Liam is he knows the way we want to play so the process is quite quick. Also, we gave a chance to Dario Essugo [who completed his move to Chelsea from Sporting Lisbon before the tournament], which is another player we have, so it's good for both of them." Here's the lowdown ahead of the game, including kick-off time, live streaming details and team news… What time does Flamengo vs Chelsea kick-off? The Group D game at the 67,000-capacity Lincoln Financial Field - home of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team - kicks off at 2pm local time (7pm BST). Where can you watch Flamengo vs Chelsea? While Channel 5 has picked up the rights to select number of games from the tournament, that does not include Flamengo vs Chelsea. DAZN are the tournament's main rights holder, with the streaming service showing every game live for free in the UK. To take advantage, viewers must sign up to DAZN's Freemium service. By signing up to the platform, customers won't be subject to hidden costs and will be able to watch the games through the DAZN App via smart TV, phones, tablets and laptops. Ad-free coverage is available for £14.99. Channel 5 will broadcast Chelsea's final group match against Esperance de Tunis on Wednesday (2am BST). What is the Flamengo vs Chelsea team news? Following a long season, including a victorious run in the Europa Conference League, Maresca refreshingly has a fully fit 24-man squad to pick from. Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix were left at home following their loan spells at Arsenal and AC Milan, respectively. However, changes will be made to the starting XI. The Blues boss said: "No injuries at the moment, but because it's a tournament and we have a game every three days, we need to rotate players. "I'm not saying we're going to rotate 10 or 11 players each game, but we will need to rotate three, four or five players each game for sure. This is because we cannot play every three days with the same players. "The ones we tried to rotate a little bit in the first game are the ones we have tried to rotate since day one: Romeo [Lavia] and Reece [James]. We also gave some minutes off to Moi [Moises Caicedo], who has played the whole season, by bringing on Dario Essugo. We will try to continue on that."
