Orlando Pirates pull plug on R70m star: Kaizer Chiefs in the hunt

Orlando Pirates have officially stepped back from the race to sign Congolese goal machine Fiston Mayele, despite years of admiration and attempts to lure him to Soweto.
The Buccaneers had identified the Pyramids FC striker as a top priority, dating back to the era of Spanish head coach José Riveiro. At the time, Pirates sought to strengthen their frontline with a proven finisher, and Mayele ticked all the right boxes.
'Orlando Pirates have been interested in Fiston Mayele since the time they were still under Jose Riveiro as their coach,' confirmed a source.
'There have been several attempts to bring him to the club, and agents from both South Africa and abroad have tried to facilitate the deal. But the reality is, the player's value has soared beyond what is feasible in the local market.'
Mayele has enjoyed a sensational campaign, spearheading Pyramids FC to their first-ever CAF Champions League triumph. The Congolese forward finished as the tournament's top scorer with nine goals, including decisive strikes against Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals and Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
The 30-year-old's performances on the continental stage have dramatically increased his market value. In the Egyptian Premier League, Mayele continued his stellar form, driving Pyramids to a second-place finish and a run to the Egypt Cup final.
Reports from Egypt reveal that Pyramids have already tabled a lucrative contract extension worth approximately R70 million per season in a bid to retain their talisman. This massive financial package has made it nearly impossible for local clubs, including Pirates.
Faced with this financial reality, Orlando Pirates have now redirected their focus to more attainable targets.
While the Buccaneers have bowed out, Kaizer Chiefs remain interested in securing Mayele's services. The striker previously confirmed he held discussions with Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi, under whom he flourished at Young Africans SC in Tanzania.
However, Mayele's soaring price tag presents a formidable obstacle for the Naturena-based side as well.
With Orlando Pirates out, can Chiefs now seal the costly deal with Mayele?

Orlando Pirates face backlash over Mbuthuma signing

Orlando Pirates have come under fire from former goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs, who has openly criticised the club's reported signing of Richards Bay FC striker Yanela Mbuthuma. The 23-year-old forward has reportedly completed a move to the Soweto giants despite recently inking a fresh five-year deal with the Natal Rich Boyz, a deal signed just four weeks ago. Mbuthuma had also attracted interest from Pirates' fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs. But if reports of the move are accurate, the Buccaneers would have had to pay a hefty transfer fee to secure his signature. However, Josephs doesn't believe Mbuthuma fits the profile Pirates should be chasing. He believes the club should focus on recruiting from the league's top-performing teams. 'Why are we looking for players from clubs that are not above the top eight [small teams]? No offence to the player that we have signed,' Josephs said on SoccerBeat . 'Look at how many goals he scored last season: he scored six goals in 27 games. However, no offence to him, but how many games did he start? So, that's like one goal every six games, pardon me if my math is off.' 'But my mind is telling me that we should be looking at the big boys [from big clubs]. We should look inside the top eight teams because outside of the top eight, there's nothing.' In contrast, Josephs had nothing but praise for Pirates' acquisition of AmaZulu FC winger Tshepang Moremi. The 24-year-old, who officially joined the Buccaneers two days ago, impressed for Usuthu last season with four goals and seven assists in 31 appearances. Josephs applauded Moremi's attitude, hunger and potential to thrive at a big club. 'Yes, I like Tshepang Moremi. He looks the part and is hungry. That boy looks like he wants to do something and achieve things, you know,' said Josephs. 'So, he is not someone who is going to be happy with getting two pairs of Adidas tracksuits and one pair of sneakers and going to the mall.' Is Mbuthuma a good Orlando Pirates signing? Orlando Pirates turn to Ouaddou after Rulani talks collapse why

Orlando Pirates stunned fans on Monday by unveiling Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, despite recent talks with Rulani Mokwena. The club moved swiftly as their European pre-season tour looms, with their first fixture against Bolton Wanderers set for 11 July in Spain. A source revealed that Mokwena remained a serious candidate, but negotiations hit a stumbling block that ultimately shifted the Buccaneers' plans. While several reports believed a deal was nearing finalisation, Pirates opted for a different direction. A club stakeholder explained one of the major reasons behind the breakdown in talks. 'Rulani (Mokwena) wanted to bring in his own bench. That didn't work out. It is part of the reason for the change,' the source said. This demand reportedly clashed with the club's internal structure. Prompting a rethink as the club pressed on with their search for a coach who fits their broader criteria. Respect remains between Mokwena and Pirates Despite the failed negotiations, the relationship between Mokwena and the Pirates hierarchy remains respectful. 'There was interest in coach Mokwena from other clubs and it's believed that Pirates wanted to give him that chance. They found one [coach] who could suit their criteria,' the source noted. Mokwena recently attracted interest from Pyramids FC, Yanga SC, and Zamalek, but he ruled himself out of contention for the Egyptian giants. However, the unfolding events at Orlando Pirates may have broader implications on where he lands next. Ouaddou, who recently resigned from Marumo Gallants and was reportedly close to joining Chippa United. Now takes the reins at one of South Africa's most demanding clubs. His appointment marks a dramatic twist and has already triggered wide debate among fans and pundits. 'You know what was happening was a tricky situation. The club hierarchy made their decision and Rulani was not the one,' a source said. Will Ouaddou be a success at Orlando Pirates?
