Jonathan Toews will officially return to the NHL next season, ending a two-year hiatus that many fans expected was more likely to lead him into retirement than back to the rink. On Friday, the 37-year-old center who captained the Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups agreed to a one-year deal with his hometown Winnipeg Jets. The deal will be official when free agency opens on July 1. Toews stepped away from hockey at the end of the 2022-23 season. He played in just 53 games that season as his body continued to break down from battles with long COVID and Chronic Immune Response Syndrome. Following the expiration of his contract with the Blackhawks, the center chose to not seek a new team while he addressed his health — a journey eventually took him to India last December. While the Jets are certainly adding a savvy veteran, it's also clear they aren't quite sure what Toews will be able to offer throughout the course of a regular season and playoff run. Look no further than his reported contract details. It's worth noting that Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was the assistant GM of the Blackhawks during the early portion of Toews' career from 2009-2011. There's a certain level of familiarity there. Cheveldayoff knows all about the intangibles Toews can bring to a locker room. But he also clearly knows about all the uncertainties here. That Toews would earn a bonus just for skating in 20 games — and every 10 games after until 60 after — sets rather low, if not reasonable expectations. It's unclear if Toews will need a conditioning stint in the AHL (if he'd be open to it) or what his role will be on the team. Per The Athletic: As a UFA, all Toews costs is cash, so Winnipeg's bet on him as a potential 2C — or as a third-line centre if the Jets run Adam Lowry's line as hard as they've done for the past three seasons — is highly sensible. The Jets will be able to take a good, long look at Toews' ability ahead of the deadline before looking for any additional upgrades. And even if Toews struggles to make a top six impact, he's been such a strong faceoff performer throughout his career that he'll be dependable as a depth option who can be trusted for key defensive zone draws — something the Jets don't often trust their current 2C, Vladislav Namestnikov, to do. Signing Toews is an incredibly low-risk, high-reward move that's also just straight up great public relations. Manitoba is home to Toews Lake and the Jonathan Toews Community Centre, both of which were renamed for the forward. But if it doesn't work out, if Toews can't manage 20 games, then the team that won the President's Trophy last year isn't on the hook for much. The club has all the talent it needs to win a Stanley Cup. Now it has another veteran who knows how to finish the job. So long as he can stay on the ice. That part remains to be seen.

Despite a lack of possession and a subdued performance from Cole Palmer out wide, Chelsea offered a threat on the counter-attack. Delap went close to opening the scoring when he burst clear and forced Agustin Rossi to palm over. Chelsea grabbed the lead when Neto benefited from a fortunate ricochet after being struck by an attempted clearance from Wesley. Advertisement The Portuguese broke clear from halfway and calmly tucked away his second goal of the tournament from the edge of the box. Neto almost created another for Delap but his pull-back was cut out by Wesley and Chelsea had a penalty appeal rejected after Enzo Fernandez went down in the area. Levi Colwill headed clear off the line after a Flamengo free-kick was slung into the area but it was not until the second period the Brazilians began to cause serious problems. Gerson should have equalised when he cut back inside Colwill to create an opportunity but his mishit shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It rebounded to Gonzalo Plata but he somehow poked wide. Advertisement Chelsea were inches away from a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, clipped the ball narrowly past his own post but the Blues had little control. They had another escape when Sanchez tipped over from Plata. The equaliser came just after the hour when Plata headed back across goal and Henrique raced in to pounce at the back post. Chelsea were reeling and were stung again just moments later as Henrique turned provider to head back a corner for Danilo to volley in. Former hockey player, beloved 'Slap Shot' movie star Guido Tenesi dead at 71
The sports world is mourning the loss of former NHL player Guido Tenesi. He was 71. Tenesi rose to stardom after he portrayed Billy Charlebois in the sports comedy film "Slap Shot" in 1977. American Hockey League franchise, the Hershey Bears, offered condolences on Thursday. "We're saddened to learn of the passing of Guido Tenesi, a member of our roster during the 1974 Calder Cup championship, and was known to many more for his role as Billy Charlebois in the classic hockey film "Slapshot," the Bears wrote in a social media post. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, and teammates." A cause of death was not immediately released. The Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Tenesi in the fifth round of the 1973 NHL amateur draft. He also spent time competing in multiple professional hockey leagues and had a two-year stint with the Penguins minor-league affiliate in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are the Penguins' current affiliate, while the Bears serve as the primary development team for the Washington Capitals. Tenesi won the North American Hockey League title when he played for the Johnstown Jets during the 1974-75 season. Tenesi recalled his time with the team and how it helped him land the role in the classic sports movie. "I played on the same team as Ned Dowd, Dave Hanson, and the Carlsons. Ned would walk around with a tape recorder, and taking notes on everything that happened on one of our road trips," Tenesi said in 2016 during an interview with the Utica Observer-Dispatch. "If someone tripped on the ice, or if a player broke their stick and threw it over the glass, Ned recorded it." The plot of "Slap Shot" followed the story of a failing minor league hockey team named the Charlestown Chiefs. Actor and director Paul Newman portrayed coach Reggie Dunlop in the film. Steve Carlson, who also starred in the movie, mourned his late co-star Tenesi as a "good guy gone too soon." "RIP Guido Tenesi "Pretty boy" Good guy gone too soon," Carlson wrote on X on Thursday. "On behalf of myself and Vicki We send our heartfelt condolences. He always had HONOR and Class. Prayers for comfort to the entire family and my fellow teammates and co actors who experience yet another loss of the teammate." In another post on Friday, Carlson remembered Tenesi as "forever a Chief." "Rest easy, #5 — you're forever a Chief," he wrote.
